I still remember extremely restrictive NES days, where Konami had to publish under "Ultra" because Nintendo wouldn't allow a certain number of games from developers. I remember alienating their third party support on the N64 days by refusing to switch to discs, then alienating them further with bad relations and poor incentives on the Gamecube. And I remember them releasing a console underpowered so that easy third-party ports easily made for two other systems couldn't be moved over without excessive amounts of work for diminished returns.
But hey, totally the third party's fault. Viva la Nintendo! You do no wrong.
What?
ds and 3ds have unbelievable third party exclusive support. For that matter so did the wii.
The only arguement thats legit is against the gamecube and n64
thats actually really impressive
Yeah. That's not exactly a good thing, though. It's unbelievable how much shovelware the DS and 3DS have. Same goes for the Wii. Phew.
Good games on them, too (although the Wii has FAR less quality games than the DS/3DS do), but the amount of shovelware just boggles the mind.
not sure what your talking about ( disjointed comments)
But every system has shovelware. The ps3 has shovelware, the ps2 had shovelware. But what the ds and 3ds had and has that things like the ps2 had were exclusives to back it up. An incredible amount of exclusives.
The DS in totality is probably nintendos best single system lineup
*raises hand*
Because of uni and money and stuff I never got around to getting either a PS3, 360 or a Wii. So I'm getting a Wii U. And Bioshock Infinite. Glad to hear that it's getting a Wii U release, even if it is a late one.
Yes. It was unbelievable. It was unbelievable how much shit they let sit on store shelves. It was unbelievable they let good games sit in a pile of shovelware.
Few third party games of exceptional quality got the sales they should have because there were so many games that few were willing to sort through the shit to find those few exceptional games.
The word gimmick gets thrown around way too much. And you can play a game without use of the touch screen. DS titles have done exactly that
Anyway, consoles are looking more and more similar, with processors from IBM and GPUs from AMD. It shouldn't matter as much which console is the "primary development platform" in the next-gen, and in fact the Wii U may dictate development as the lowest common denominator.
no offense but you said the ds had a bad library I cant take you seriously now.
Actually alot of great series on the ds had there highest sales ever
ie pokemon, dragon quest, shiren, kirby to name a small few
so yeah, the ds did very well for alot of companies
in fact square, capcom, namco, atlus, and others have come out and said how good the ds was for them
... the WiiU will still be a new console for them to work with after all.. so some growing pains will be expected and a concurrent release might be too much to hope for.
gimmick |ˈgimik|
noun
a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.
OH SHIT.
alot of people thought a analog stick was unnecessary.
And alot of people thought a touch screen was unnesseary and then the ds and ios happened
alot of things are called gimmicks before they take off and add things to the gameplay
how about uuurrr...
me?
@marche
I still have no idea what we are talking about. Dont worry about clueing me in if it doesnt matter
If anyone here says touch screens have zero applications for games, then I might have to reevaluate my faith
deal or no deal huh?
Dont be stupid and dilute a library of thousands of titles. too 3 casual titles.
The DS had to overcome the same "gimmick" perception that persisted prior to its release, and I admit that I was among the skeptics. Only when it was in consumers' hands did that line of criticism go away, and I expect this case to proceed in similar fashion.
Id prefer to call it a new feature. And whether its a gimmick ( which we know it isnt) would be determined after a game came out that uses it
Your second paragraph is correct
Because of the ds I am a big believer in not only touch screen gaming but dual screen gaming too
"Watching third parties working on Nintendo consoles is often like watching a train wreck in slow motion. It doesn't matter how much you scream, there's nothing you can do to alter their doomed course for failure." - Jolmes

Either that or Resident Evil 4, Super Monkey Ball, etc. were secretly published by Nintendo.
Donīt embarass yourself by calling the DS and 3DS undersupported by 3rd parties. The DS is right up there (and in my opinion even surpasses it) with the Ps2 when it comes to quality exclusives . I wonīt post a list but saying something ...I canīt even find the right words...uneducated like this is just baffling.
I tried to keep him from embarrassing himself but he did it anyway.
The ds is right there with the best third party support on any single platform
Didnīt we have that before ? Do you remeber the Mass Effect 3 port ?
"I canīt believe they actually used the screen to ENHANCE the experience and make every change subtile and optional..."
Remember that ? That was you !
Criticism against Gamecube's 3rd party support is more than fair. Not that there weren't ANY at all, but the sparse amount of quality 3rd party games were too little too late, and were pretty much all ported to the PS2. I guess the fact that a game gets an enhanced port on the PS2 doesn't harm the original gamecube version, but it still speaks badly to Nintendo's luck with 3rd parties.
The Wii is a gimmick, a really crappy and imprecise gimmick I might add, they made something to have it work better and guess what? IT WAS NEVER SUPPORTED, thus continuing the trend of Nintendo peripherals. I can't count the number of titles that most agree would have been better without horrible motion garbage(Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong to name a few).
The way the controller is also limits what developers can do in regards to porting, why do you think the Wii U has a traditional looking one now? Its an alternative.
It still doesn't change the fact that Nintendo treats its 3rd parties like crap. Look at the "killer app" lists for the Wii U, shits either gonna be out or has been out already for months, Ninja Gaiden 3 is one of their launch titles, one of the worst games of last year.
