Yes, you read that right. There won't be any LAN support for the console or PC versions of BioShock 2. Dedicated servers are also out completely.
The Cult of Rapture put up a Q&A list of multiplayer related key points and LAN support and dedicated servers just weren't able to make it in. Digital Extremes, the developers behind BioShock 2's multiplayer, wanted to ensure they created a solid game foundation first and foremost. They could have either spent all their resources doing everything and leaving things feeling unfinished, or they could have spent their time focusing on key parts to make a good overall multiplayer experience, as the A of the Q&A states.

BIOSHOCK 2 MULTIPLAYER AND MATCHMAKING Q&A [2K Games]
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
They go out and buy it anyway. That's a real way to show them you have some spine, right?
Also, I thought companies would have learned their lesson with the very underwhelming reviews of the PC version of MW2, which stands almost 10 points lower than the console version.
All in all, if you want to be dicks 2K, be dicks, but don't expect to get rewarded for it.
Bioshock 2 might as well put a big 'pirate me' sticker on its back.
Hell, I still play Assault on Dark Athena online sometomes.
Is this the downside to being a PC gamer these days?
Fuck multiplayer, too.
But then they add crazy DRM, these online issues, not to mention that my PC doesn't meet the recommended processor...
Cost of PC Game - $50
Watching PC Fanboys Complain and Threaten Boycotts - Priceless
I just don't like the current trend of "hey, you used to enjoy muliplayer games on your pc? well, forget what made them fun, pc losers!!!"
A definite no buy. Like MW2.
Just play games people.
IW also already had netcode from their first game while 2k was building their MP mode from scratch. I can give them a little bit of leeway here.
It obviously doesn't mean anything to you to be able to play pc multiplayer games on dedicated servers, and suddenly companies are no longer supporting online communities like this? I call bullshit on that fact. It could very well be that you are not a online pc gamer, so of course it wouldn't mean as much to you to play on a dedicated server or LAN, or not.
Its just us people who are used to playing with it, fucking hate that these companies are not supporting it anymore, for some idiotic reason.
Again, if you've been playing games for years and suddenly they took some of the best community based features that extended the lifetime of the game based on modifications and persistent servers, wouldn't you be pissed too? I don't expect you to understand, because console games don't really have anything like this.
The closest thing I could think of at the moment is, what if xbox live pretty much shut down everything except the ability to play games online, and instead they put into place a Wii-like friend code feature? It would be a pain in the ass to play with friends and have fun, right? Exactly.
I kind of get your point. But it's not that you've been playing Bioshock on dedicated servers for years. Modern Warfare 2? Yeah that might be something different since that's is pretty much an online only game. But in Bioshock's case it's just an extra feature. Which I'm pretty sure nobody is going to bother with after 2 weeks or so. You have to look at every game by itself. Don't compare it with MW2 and don't go overboard with boycotting games. In the end the only thing you'll accomplish is not playing the game.
Bioshock is not the game to let out your displeasure. Even moreso it's not a game people will play online.
I'm not about to protest against environmental destruction by yelling at one guy who threw a candy wrapper and suddenly everyone will get it.
No I don't play PC game but I do understand the situation and I most certainly do care. But if you think nerd raging over a game no one will play online anyway is worth it you're doing it wrong.
Reward them for what will hopefully be a good single player campaign and ignore their shitty multiplayer.
in my first post I stated:
"Not like the multiplayer is going to be the selling point but,
I just don't like the current trend of "hey, you used to enjoy muliplayer games on your pc? well, forget what made them fun, pc losers!!!""
That was all I meant. I was just trying to explain it to people who had no clue about what they are talking about, and making snide remarks about how PC gamers should cry a river.
Nerd rage? clearly not. Sorry my 'nerd rage' was inappropriate for a relevant article. My bad.
I understand that it's nice to have the option of playing online the way that you want, but I really think there's a case to be made for stepping back and really picking your fights.
Nice to see you continue to make vapid, anti-consumer comments. You know that 2K isn't going to give you a prize for taking it in the ass? Why are average Destuctoid readers so fucking ignorant, while proudly championing any company that makes games WORSE.
I have never been a big online gamer. Only a few games have really persuaded me to play online for any length of time, Team Fortress 2 and AvP2. Games like Modern Warfare and Halo's online play have never really gotten me interested. I hope Bioshock will be closer to AvP2 than Halo for me.
"I love listening to people moan about DRM and no dedicated servers. Pc gamer tear's are the sweetest"
Oh it is true.
Yeah, you're right. I don't think it's going to be horrible but I do think people are playing the game for the single-player campaign and therefor not bothering with the online features that long. Except for that select few of course. Just like Uncharted 2 (Don't know the real facts and figures but I base my arguments on people showing up on FNF).
Also, Bioshock 2 multiplayer is not on my list of reasons I have pre-ordered Bioshock 2.
