BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams trailer discovered as PS3 extra (Update)

7:21 AM on 10.16.2008, Jim Sterling 73 comments

     Bioshock

Yep, that's right. The PlayStation 3 version of BioShock has a little sneaky extra which fans will find most interesting indeed. It's a teaser trailer for BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams. Set on the Atlantic Coast, the trailer shows a Little Sister with a Big Daddy doll in her hand, looking out onto the ocean.

Watch the video enough for the trailer. It's low quality, but for now it gives you the idea. With that out of the way, let the speculation and gossip commence!

[Update: I wanted to pass along info on the song, "Dreams" written by Johnny Mercer and recorded by The Pied Piper's in late 1944. The song became a hit and topped the charts in 45. You can listen to the full track here. - Nick]

I guess this confirms BioShock 2 on the PS3. Exclusive?!? Probably not...but at least this makes it the definitive version of BioShock.

Oh, I went there!

I think this signifies a sync release date for both PS3 and 360 versions???

I seriously doubt it will be a PS3 exclusive as it originally came out for the 360, but, who knows?

The trailer looks phat.

This is obviously proof that the PS3 is shit somehow. Not sure how, but I will use my bad journalism to spin this out of context soon!

I doubt it will be exclusive but just cause a game was originally released on one console, doesn't mean it can't jump ships.

one nil down, two-one up, that's the way the PS3 doesn't suck...????

Who knows. I think it will come out on both. In fact, I hope it does even though I don't have a 360.

I do hope it will come out for both (it probably will), because I do not want to have to buy a PS3.

Thats amazing! But will it take place in Rapture again?
When you look at the original Bioshock logo, and the Bioshock 2 logo at the end, you see that the buildings are placed a bit differently from each other.

Why are people speculating whether this will be exclusive to the PS3? You know it will be multi platform. The only thing left to speculate is whether the sequel will live up to the original game.

And is little sister a teen now? She seems a bit bigger than her Rapture sistas.

Well, those impromptu sand sculptures, on the Atlantic Coast, resembled a city springing to life for me. A big, busy one. I doubt we'll be going back to Rapture this time.

I'd say it's at least 2-3 years in the future, as the "Little" Sister appeared older to me. That's all I got.

SuitcoatAvenger's Avatar

I think there's a fundamental problem here, we've already been to Rapture. Exploration was the point of the game, and the city was as much of a character as the Splicer's, Little Sister's, and Big Daddy's ever were. We hit all of the important areas of the city; from the ballrooms, to the hospitals, to the very inner workings of the engines that run the city itself. There's not a whole lot left to explore, and returning to these areas won't provide the same excitement it did the first time around.

So what's left to draw us back and make it worthwhile? I really loved Bioshock, but didn't the first one say all it needed to? Is there really more ground to cover? Doesn't it run the risk of cheapening the message present in the original by forcing a sequel and unnecessarily expanding the narrative?

What I thought seemed kind of cool, was that it looked like the little girl (or sister) used plasmids to create a sandcastle-like Rapture. Maybe everyone else got this when they watched, but I didn't at first.

Paying attention to the logo at the end, it has water dripping at first and then it looks like it dries out and a butterfly lands on it. Rapture comes to the surface? Or are the pulling a Jurassic Park and there is second city/island? Whatever it is, I'm interested to see whats going to happen.

I'm looking forward to when this game comes out and everyone bitching now about how it shouldn't have a sequel is crapping their pants over how awesome it is.

Or maybe it'll just be exploitave crap. Time will tell.
nademagnet's Avatar

Yeah, the lil' sister looks a lil' older and it does look like she did something to create the sand sculptures (she twitches and a puff of sand near her feet happens just before the city scape rises up).

As for the logo, the Butterfly doesn't land on it, it crawls out of a freaking barnacle... that's just... odd. Are we going to have some sort of barnacle plasmid that lets us throw butterflies at our enemies? I hope so.

Also, Mr Bubbles is looking a little worse for wear my dear. You best get him fixed up :D

that makes sense. It would be really cool if Rapture rose to the surface, but I don't know how they could pull it off.

Brilliant and beautiful. I hope they make it a fair bit harder though. For the "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2, I'm still disappointed at how simplified and easy it was, even on the hardest difficulty setting.

the Little Sister looks to have an earth type plasmid!?? she does look grown up from what she was. Could it be that you play as a Sister and some plot involves finding the one that saves you. Interesting theory

Looks like New York sprouting from the ground?

Maybe there will be some city building of a new society involved with this game... Looks like it takes place later on judging by the appearance of that little sister.

I wonder if you'll still play as Jack...
Slique's Avatar

I'm actually a bit upset that it doesn't look like it'll be a prequel. I mean, we already know what happens to Jack and the LS, as we saw it at the end of the first game. A lot of the wow factor of seeing Rapture for the first time will also be lost now, as we've literally been there and done that. Alas, and I was so hoping to get to see Rapture in it's hayday. :(

Ah the unnecessary sequel, how I love thee. I thought that there was a pretty hefty amount of closure at the end of the first game with respect to the Little Sisters and Jack.

Maybe they could make a game that lives up to the promise of "successor" to the System Shock series this time around.
