BioShock 2 release delayed until fiscal 2010 (Update) photo

Your holiday gaming line-up just got a bit less crowded -- Take-Two Interactive has announced that it's moved BioShock 2 from fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2010. Read: probably next year.

Unsurprisingly, the publisher cites the need to provided "additional development time for the title," as well as its revised outlet for the the remainder of fiscal 2009, due to lower-than-expected performance.

"The decision to shift a release date is never an easy one, especially with a product as highly anticipated as BioShock 2," says Chief Executive Officer of Take-Two, Ben Feder. "We felt that it was essential to invest the additional time to ensure that this title will deliver what its fans expect and deserve. As a result, we will now be launching sequels to several of our strongest franchises -- including BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption -- during the next fiscal year."

It should be noted that "fiscal 2010" for Take-Two starts in November, so there's a chance we could see BioShock 2 by year's end. But you know... any other big plans for this holiday?

[Update: It's official -- BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3, and Red Dead Redemption -- will all see release in the "first half of calendar 2010," according to Feder in this afternoon's Take-Two financial update conference call.]

No shit. I'll go ahead and tell you, you won't be playing Final Fantasy 13 this year either.

With all the companies they have working on this game, you'd think it would be done by now.

Well, hopefully this means that BioShock 2 will turn out to be an even better game, unless they are doing exactly what NBABS says, pushing it back cause there is too much shit being released this year.

Kinda sucks. I was really looking forward to this at the end of the year.

Well, that's one more down. I'll replay the first game instead!

Do any of you remember the constant delays that the original Bioshock went through? I'm not shocked this one is delayed as well. I for one am really happy about this. I was getting overwhelmed once again with how many big titles were going to be coming out this holiday season. Nice to know that list just got a little shorter.

Personally, I think this is a good thing. Let's be real here. BioShock 2 looks close to the original but, sometimes I think it might be s little too close...

Way of the Samurai 3? Why isn't that what you blogs talk about instead of a System Shock impersonation.

Phew, I really can't afford it all this stuff this year, hopefully more publishers gain their senses.

Dang it. Lets hope they use the time to really polish the game. BioShock is one hell of a game to follow up to, especially for a freshman developer.

Truth be told my holiday wishlist was too large and my holiday free time kinda short so I'm happy to hear this( I didn't have that many vacation days).

More evidence that this game is shaping up poorly and needs more work. A title this big doesn't get pushed back because of competition. It's the smaller budget games that use delays to avoid having to battle it out with heavyweights like Bioshock 2. I just hope they use the extra time well.

The choice for me comes down to "Max Payne or Mafia?", which is like saying "Chuck Norris or Rambo?" to me.

More footage plox.

This is kind of nice to hear. I wouldn't have been able to pick this when it was originally supposed to come out.

I'd rather wait and have a better game... so I rarely have a problem with revised later release dates!

This is smart. I like this. Gives more time for development and allow us to spend our gift cards on something. :)

Meh I will live

But did Take Two REALLY just delay ALL their games? Thats not going to please the investors.

That's kind of a brilliant move.

None of these are really "under the Christmas tree" sort of titles.

If they can own the after space, like Lost and the Damned, Street Fighter IV and RESi 5 did, they'll have a nice catch phrase to say that they're owning the industry.

You know, I'm starting to like this trend of companies spreading out their releases to after the pass of the holiday season. Now if they would only spread a little bit further into the summer too...

Awww... I already had my pre-order, too. So lame. But meh, guess it's for the better. I remember what happened last fall. I bought so many games in September-Fall that I ended up ignoring most of them until December because I was playing Fallout 3 so much. I mean seriously, I still haven't finished Silent Hill: Homecoming! Modern Warfare 2 is just probably going to distract me until Left 4 Dead 2, then I'll be distracted again until Bioshock 2. So it's all right. Just a little bummed out now that I'll have to wait longer, is all...

I understand changing a release date; less pressure, better timing, etc. However, I've been anticipating this game since the release of the first, before it had even been announced or speculated, only dreaming of how to incorporate an Adam based multiplayer gameplay. To see this pushed back makes me sad, even if i will have sixty-five extra dollars in November.
