BioShock 2 officially announced for 2009 photo

We all knew it was coming (though many of us lamented it), but today Take-Two has officially announced that work on a BioShock sequel is underway. It is currently planned for release in Q4 of 2009.

Nothing has been announced as far as plotline goes, although many people are expecting a prequel that shows the downfall of Rapture. Furthermore, no specific platform has been specified as of yet, so we don't know if BioShock will remain a PC/Xbox 360 exclusive or if the PS3 will get a piece of the action this time around.

So there you have it. BioShock is now officially a franchise, with a little pink ribbon and everything. Still don't know how I feel about this, because I'm definitely in the camp that felt Rapture's back story was already perfectly presented, and that nothing was needed to further conclude its existence either. Strange how normally, news of a sequel makes fans of a game happy, yet this time around there's a lot of concern.

That means you have something very special and very delicate in your hands, Take-Two. Don't screw it up.

[Thanks, Trevor Green]

And by BioShock in Space I mean something like the Alien Ship level in Crysis with zero gravity and not really SS.

HAI GUYZ. I'm not going to bitch! Isn't that a novel idea!

Seriously, though. I'm not going to pass judgment on this until they announce that it's going to be a dating sim starring a middle-aged Elvis impersonator from Kuala Lumpur. The first BioShock was great, and the second one might well be just as great.

P.S. Sequels happen. Accept that and get over it. (Unless of course you happen have the power to make original IPs magically appear. In that case, help us.)

over at kotaku, people mentioned multiplayer -
now I don't think that can top the 1st game's story - but player vs player shooting bees at each other? here's my money 2K Marines!

Ugh, I'm going to pretend this game doesn’t exist. I just know it's going to show pre-rapture and ruin everything that was cool about Bioshock. GODDAMIT.

After finally playing through BioShock finally a month or two ago I can officially say I disagree with a sequel being made.

There is no possible way another game can equally capture the feel of that game and present it in nearly as masterful fashion.

DO NOT WANT.

Undecided, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that my general leaning is toward DO NOT WANT.

No way will this be anywhere near the first, and you heard it ITT first.

I think the best way to do this, if at all, would be a prequel in the form of a short movie.

Although I loved Bioshock, I dont really think that it needs a sequel. It was a great game that I enjoyed, so I will probably get this sequel, but with a sort of heavy heart.

I thought it would be REALLY cool if they did Bioshock 2 in the future on a space station. So kida the same premise but in a different setting. Then again I would love to see more of the Art Deco Rapture.

What about Prey 2?

I'm really not excited about this announcement. Bioshock stood well on its own and the story is finished--it doesn't need to be drawn out further.

I would be all for a "spiritual successor" (hell, Bioshock is the "spiritual successor" of System Shock), but I don't want them to bleed this game dry. Hopefully they can bring a fresh perspective that doesn't make the game seem forced and knock a solid sequel out of the park a la System Shock 2.

Bioshock was a good game, if they can kep tat level of production values, they may have something worth playing at the end.

However they need to shift place, people, timing and political moralities. Maybe a different undersea Rapture like world that was created by the first few people who wanted out of the original Rapture, set up with a different political ideal, but still doomed to failure. And maybe played out during the failure.

Unfortunately the prequel ideal will probably win (and likely fail). Especially without Levine cracking the whip.

Also, they should have BigMummies (or mommies for those of you who are geographically challenged) with little brothers. Of course, just like in real life, beating the crap out of little brothers would be required to advance the story.

Multiplayer? For what? *rolls eyes*

For fuck's sake, Bioshock is not Halo. That's what they make Halo (and Call of Duty, and about seventy other titles) for.

Doh. Could be fantastic, but why not just do a spiritual sequel, as Bioshock was to System shock? I don't know whether to be skeptical or excited.

Multiplayer might be cool. System Shock 2 has multiplayer. I just hope this one doesn't add some trashed on Co-Op that won't make sense. However, I find it foolish that many gamers didn't see this coming. Wake up. They'll MAKE something work. Besides, as long as they don't annual add a new BioShock, then we're good.

And Bioautographical, Halo isn't close to anything of great multiplayer. It's a dummied version of what real multiplayer is. Console fanboys ftl.

It could be great. It could destroy what was created. I'll reserve judgement till the game actually comes out.

@DryvBy

Well, I think most people are thinking in terms of console play in Bioshock. I'm aware there's a PC version, but meh.

And I certainly hope you're not suggesting Bioshock be done in any way like World of Warcraft or Team Fortress or something. That's simply not what the game is. Half the fun of Bioshock was the creeping fear that you were completely alone in a hostile dystopian metropolis.

I just don't see why people need to tamper with a good thing. I agree that maybe a "spiritual" sequel would be alright, but as has been said, it'd contain different characters and settings and expositions. Everyone's dead, Little Sisters are saved, no more is needed. Move on.

I don't mind another Bioshock. Sure, Rev. always brings up the game in every Podcast ever, but the game's fine and dandy, and I like it.

But my gripe is this; when a good movie comes out, you rarely ever see a sequel. When a good game comes out, holy shitcockpoop, let's milk this fucker for all it's worth! Awesome, Viewtiful Joe sold well! Let's make a sequel, a fighter, and a DS spin-off!

I'd rather see more new games than see the same game whoring itself over and over. Sure, sometimes a sequel will be appreciated (hey Mischief Makers) but at least give it a chance to sink in a little, you know?

" Phoenix Gammaa.

I kinda liked the viewtiful joe spinoff on DS.

seriously, with this though. I wanna see three interlocked storylines. A follower of ryan, a follower of fontaine, and a person selected for the big daddy program.

that`s the only way I can see this story not sucking.

Might it be a better game if they just took it into a different genre? I mean, we're all worried that a second FPS in Rapture just won't recapture the magic, so maybe the world would be better served with a Bioshock MMO. If nothing else, it would give everyone who got stuck with a boring character a chance to figure out why Peaches and his ilk were so fed up they decided to chill with Fontaine.

I'm not saying it's a great idea, but it certainly skirts the issue of ending up with Bioshock Episode I: The Phantom Parasite.
