BioShock 2 loses the tagline, Sea of Dreams is no more photo

I remember back in October 2008 when we first discovered the Sea of Dreams trailer on the PS3 version of BioShock. Even scared, I was a bit hopeful that the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time could possibly be something I might enjoy playing. Of course, since then we've heard word of everything from co-op to Russians, and my hopes for the title to be remotely decent have ventured into the dirt.

IGN reports that 2K has officially announced a name change for the sequel, dropping the Sea of Dreams tagline and just going with BioShock 2. Interesting. I know the name doesn't really matter, but I kind of liked the tagline. I've given up on freaking out over murky details that may or may not be true about the game, so I'll leave the speculation to you guys -- does a slight name change mean anything to you?

Well all that's left now is whether or not the B2 story in GameInformer was an April Fools joke or not because it's a completely real and existent article (got mine in the mail yesterday).

It's a pretty huge article though, and I don't think there's ever been a gaming April Fools joke anywhere that was this complex.

In the famous words written by Shakespeare, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet". That is all.

I'm not really sure what it means to me on a personal level, but I'm pretty sure there's going to be less syllables in there or something.

I'm glad, I think to many games go with the colon and subtitle route. It kind of annoys me.

"Seas of Dreams" Is that supposed to be irony? Cause an underworld aquatic prison with psycho people and hulking giants with big ass drills don't sounds more like a nightmare than happy fun land.

How about a little more gameplay and story information and a little less useless marketing decisions, eh 2k Marin?

I have a distinct dislike of sequels with numbers and no altered title.

I much rather keep the tagline, and get rid of the numbers.

You know, I absolutely hate that teaser image. It kept bothering me, but I couldn't figure out why. Then it hit me; it's just so damn generic. A woman standing on a beach holding a Big Daddy doll? Oh, of course she's a little sister. For a property that thrived being being out of the box, I have a bad feeling that the sequel is going to fall back too much on genre standby's. "Sea of Dreams" wasn't a great subtitle by any means, but it's better than Bioshock 2. I almost wish that they would be ballsy and just name it something else entirely, like "Rapture" or something. Fans would know what's up, and if it's good enough the hype will do the rest of the job.

I agree with SuitcoatAvenger, a completely new title is the best thing they could do. Bioshock 2 is about as plain and boring as you could get. Even if they just called it Sea of Dreams, that would be better than Bioshock 2.

I agree that RAPTURE would be a pretty good title, but there's nothing wrong with BIOSHOCK 2.

What was great about the title BIOSHOCK was its stark, evocative simplicity (plus the reference to the SYSTEM SHOCK series!). Any subtitle would detract from that, especially one as lame as "Sea of Dreams."

I thought the tagline had a certain charm to it. Whether or not it has any bearing on the game itself is only something the developers could answer. I just hope it's a good game.

Wasn't System Shock 2 generally believed to be better than the first?
