BioShock 2 hits shelves February 9, 2010 photo

After what seemed like countless delays, 2K Games has announced a new release date for BioShock 2 -- February 9, 2010.

I'm not going to waste your time rambling on just to fill up space in this story of hear myself type. Because really, the release date is the only story here. What else do you need? A preview? Concept art? You're so demanding.

2K rambled on about it for awhile in a press release; you can find it after the jump.

2K Games Announces February 9, 2010 Global Street Date for BioShock® 2

Sequel to the winner of more than 50 Game of the Year Awards marks the arrival of one of 2010's most highly anticipated titles

New York, NY – September 18, 2009 – 2K Games announced today that BioShock® 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2007 Game of the Year, will be available worldwide beginning February 9, 2010. The game is now available for pre-order at participating retailers.

Currently in development for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows® LIVE, BioShock 2 will deliver two unique, yet intertwined experiences that form the perfect blend of explosive first-person shooter combat, compelling storytelling and intense multiplayer action.

Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock, the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past. Along the Atlantic coastline, a monster has been snatching little girls and bringing them back to the undersea city of Rapture. Players step into the boots of the most iconic denizen of Rapture, the Big Daddy, as they travel through the decrepit and beautiful fallen city, chasing an unseen foe in search of answers and their own survival.

Multiplayer in BioShock 2 will provide a rich prequel experience that expands the origins of the BioShock fiction. Set during the fall of Rapture, players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, a premier provider of Plasmids and Tonics in the underwater city of Rapture that was first explored in the original BioShock. Players will need to use all the elements of the BioShock toolset to survive, as the full depth of the BioShock experience is refined and transformed into a unique multiplayer experience that can only be found in Rapture.

BioShock 2 is currently in development at 2K Marin in collaboration with 2K Australia, Digital Extremes and 2K China for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Games for Windows® LIVE. BioShock 2 will be available worldwide on February 9, 2010. This title is not yet rated by the ESRB.

I feel like this sequel won't have near the charm as the first mainly because the first game was such a great surprise that it sort of became sacred to some people. I think Bioshock should of just ended. The story alone could be timeless if just left as is, why risk screwing it up.

But nobody can turn back now so I hope to hell they knock this game out of the park.

@BrandonUndead

My fiancee's birthday is also on the 11th! Happy birthday to the both of you, I know she'll be looking forward to it since she's a pretty big Bioshock fan, I really hope BS2 can live up to the greatness of the first!

Well...now I know how much time I need to upgrade my computer which has been long overdue anyway. Been putting it off but with the arrival of Dragon Age and this, it's about time.

As long as there is no major focus on multiplayer, it seems like the focus was really on the multiplayer so the campaign probably suffered.

Too bad I didn't like the first one.... too much backtracking...

I might play this just to see how much they've improved... If they did I might buy it... FOR MY BIRTHDAY! :D

I agree with Super-Weedgan, the game should have just ended. But in most places the original was Game of the Year, and there is money to be had. I don't know, I'm nowhere near as excited for Bioshock 2 as I was for the original.

I don't know how I missed it... but I was thinking this was a prequel. I have a weird aversion to prequels. It's kind of like... I already know how the story is going to end, so why bother?

I'm very excited that this is in fact a chronological sequel.

Also: I hope the hard mode in this is actually hard. Bioshock was way too easy.

Whoa, now I'm confused. The main story takes place 10 years after and the multiplayer is a prequel? Wow that's alot more interesting than I thought.

@faultymoose
I played it for the first time on that ps3 survivor mode, and granted the first few levels were brutal, since you had almost no powers, the rest of the game was pretty easy. So yea I agree with you on that.
