BioShock 2 gets mandatory 5GB PS3 install photo

In what has become an all-too common story for PS3 games, BioShock 2 will require a mandatory installation on Sony's Black Box o' Blu-ray. Just be warned that you'll be hanging around for a while after you pop the disc in the system. Because nobody liked to just play the videogames they've purchased, right?

The PS3 experience seems to be centered around watching very slow installation screens and waiting for things in the XMB to bother loading, so this should be business as usual for all PlayStation fans. Have fun with that!

Does this take long? I dont have a PS3 so I've never experienced this type of thing, but I can imagine it being somewhat annoying especially if you've been really excited for the release.

awesome story. maybe their pain will be eased by not having to pay to play bioshock multiplayer??? way to encourage people flaming each other over ps3 v. xbox dominance, because its so much fun to read little twats going at each other over the system that mommy bought them. do you have any other juicy stories that drag destructoid further into the gutter, jimbo???

This asks for a stupid comment so let me put this in.

Put the damn DVD in your 360 and play. Don't bother installing it to the HDD if you are impatient to play off the DVD.

Bluray == faster than DVD read, but accessing all that damn contents in the bluray still takes much longer time which translates into slow load time.

I normally install game on 360, but all the snotty people who keep saying it's okay to install, I salute you with my little finger and smell the success.

I seriously have no clue what I am typing, but I feel better now.

Oh no whatever should I do both my PC and PS3 require me to install!

Oh yeah... I don't care.

You have fun paying for a service that should be free now.

Does anyone really care that there is a mandatory install? I mean if the game will load better im going to choose to install it anyways so does it really matter in the end?

How is this anything other than flame bait? Anyone with a ps3 who played the first bioshock had the same 5gb install. This affects no one who doesn't have a ps3, so is this story for the 1 ps3 player in the entire world who ignorantly expected no install?

This is just as much of a nonissue as Final Fantasy XIII on 360 being on three discs.

Just one more reason why gamefly and blockbuster can't get people rent the ps3 version of games. And yes, the installs do take forever when I picked up uncharted 2 I watched 2 episodes of burn notice before it was done. That included both the install and the required update.

Yes, unless FF XIII is on a CD-ROM, I won't buy the damn thing. The proper experience you can have with any FF game is the mandatory multi-discs.

Honestly, I really wish more PS3 developers would go this route to cut down on the slow read time of BD. Case in point: Killzone 2. If GG had forced an install, maybe then the game wouldn't have had to load every time I walked up or down a set of stairs. Seriously, once, I actually got up and walked to my PS3 to reset it because it was completely unresponsive for over 10 seconds. Just before I touched the power button the game came back on like nothing had happened...

A five minute install for a game's worth of short load times is a no-brainer for me.

At least I could play it on the PS3, instead of on my RRoD Xbox. 15 minutes is preferable to 2-4 weeks for a refurbished console. (Yes, I've always and never wanted to make that remark and now I can!)

Ah, fuck it, I'm getting it on PC anyway. I don't care.

Since when are installs a bad thing? You get home, you pop the game in and while the install is going on, you go fix yourself a snack or drop a grumpy or whatever.

Only idiots sit in front of their TV staring at the bar slowly go up. Economize the time!

No it's more like 5~20 minutes installation times (I think I saw multiple screen of installation b/c an update is available. Sony did revolutionized the console by getting rid of instant play from the optical drive concept. I am just so much happy that my essential gaming experience comes down to this:
- Insert the game disc.
- Click a few times to start the install.
- Go take a dump for about 15 minutes come back and realized that my PS3 waits for my input on something. Click a few more time.
- Go make yourself a sandwich.
- Watch the horizontal bar or non descriptive spinning things on the screen wondering if my PS3 froze up.
- Go wash my face and come back.
Viola! Game is up and running!!! Then I decided to play something else.

Hope you recognize a sarcasm. More PS3 games should do the mandatory installation. PS3 users are patient. They waited 2 years to play decent games on PS3. They can wait a few minutes.

Jim baiting again, eh?

If I didn't know any better I would swear he's just another fanboy. But I digress, I own a PC (that can run the game), a PS3, and (did) own a 360. Can't say I care about loading times to be honest.

Now, if the PS3's framerates were significantly slower, or the Xbox was tearing, that's another situation entirely.

Meh, must be a slow news day.

I'm going to pick this up on PS3 for the free multiplayer, but this is annoying. The other day I deleted a bunch of demos and came out with around 12 gig of free space. Shouldn't be a problem but I'd rather have the room there..

If worst comes to worse, Home can go. That's eating up a significant portion and I haven't touched it for about a year. Its only really there to look pretty and annoy people when they accidentally click it and have to sit through a loading bar before they can get back to the menu.

How is though that many game devs manage to create ps3 versions if games that don't require the install. I have both consoles and I'll admitt it's annoying having to wait around for the game to install. Not a deal breaker but slightly annoying.

For all those people saying 'it's no big deal, who cares about load times', I'd like to say that I do. It's one of the reasons I will never purchase any multiplatform game ever on the PS3. I love the thing, but it's already chock full of consistent and irritatingly long load times, patches, updates, etc., depending upon what I'm doing with the thing.

BUT, when I saw Carlton say "Installs > disc swapping" I was reminded the other night of when it was midnight and I was prompted to put in disc 2 of ME2. I groaned that I physically had to get up, and then felt horrible because I must be slipping down the slope of becoming a slovenly, lazy, and worthless human being :P I don't mind changing discs, so that's not a big deal for me, just in the same way load times when you get a new game aren't a big deal for others.
