A recent interview has confirmed that BioShock 2 will be receiving downloadable content after it launches next month. According to 2K Marin's Kent Hudson, the studio is working on some "aggressive" DLC plans as we speak.
"Absolutely," says Hudson, when asked if DLC is coming. "We are working on pretty aggressive plans for DLC and that’s actually something that is already underway. That is something that is mostly being run out of the Marin studio because like I said the Australian studio is already ramping up on the next big thing."
So far, nothing has been detailed, so we've no idea what form this DLC may take. The original BioShock released a new difficulty level along with some brand new Plasmids. With BioShock 2 containing multiplayer and 2K Games ready to make as much cash as possible, who knows what treats are in store for our wallets?
Let the digital rape commence!

I think it's because Bioshock was a very complete package, and had very little DLC (heck, one was free). The "very aggressive" DLC has me worried they with-held content from the retail disc.
Yeah and I see that but still I guess my point is we don't know anything. Give 'em the benefit of the doubt.
In general whenever DLC is announced pre-release people around here tend to get defensive and it's now always warranted yet.
The only time I have an issue is when they charge for content existing on the disc. Or when the rope off a good chunk of the game world to sell it to me later.
Ahem.
Just because they announce it before the release, or say they have an aggressive DLC plan doesn't mean they took stuff out of the main game but instead means they have put preparation and crunch time into it.
Awww, too bad 2K, although I wasn't going to buy your game anyway, a sequel that didn't need to exist with content that should come with the game but I have to pay for and a needless multiplayer option that was only added in to rake in the Halo and Call of Duty fans.
Didn't think the original was worthy of anything above 8 anyway.
Yeah, because all Halo and Call of Duty fans are mindless followers of anything with mulitplayer on consoles.
But you see this isn't content that as you put it "should have originally come with the game". As much as I originally agreed with your statement of this sequel is unnecessary I enjoy the great setting of Rapture so much and what more so badly that I am happy to have a new game come out.
Though your mind is obviously made up about Bioshock 2, probably because like many gamers you are apparently clairvoyant or a time traveller. You'll probably not listen to reason based on facts. So simply I offer you this.
Actually learn about how the industry works, and games are developed before commenting on them. Like I said before, so many game developers do this because a Game goes gold, and they are either moving to the next big thing or working on DLC.
Though some companies do both, having a smaller team working on the DLC (or a completely different one.)
@mizzougrad01
I have been keeping up with the borderlands DLC and its been great stuff so far. So as you said, with the same publisher, here's to hoping for some more high-quality stuff.
No, but I figured the expression was an accurate way of getting my point across that they just want to attract die-hard fans of multiplayer.
@Leon
It all comes done to greed. If they had an idea and wanted to add it along with the game, maybe as an extra or integrated into the experience itself, they could delay the game a few months and finish off some DLC to give to the consumer. But no, they want the money. The publisher wants to release it on a specific date to make money and won't finance something that won't make him money.
Try as hard as you like, you can't validate an argument that DLC is not a flawed concept when you have to pay for it, especially when the counter argument, while a bit unrealistic, is that they can just work on the DLC and include it at release by delaying the entire game or provide it for free.
It's just all about money and I'm not going to excuse publishers' greedy nature here as something natural, I'm going to condemn it and refuse to buy DLC.
Why I'm not buying Bioshock 2 is because the original I felt was great, but absolutely nothing special and I doubt the sequel will be anything special either, at least from what I've seen so far.
The way this multiplayer appears to be shaping up, it may attract fans of Bioshock more. I'd have to play it before I could say whether or not I think it is multiplayer for the sake of multiplayer.
Also, I agree this sequel doesn't need to exist. I reckon an MMO/RPG prequel could work though.

From what I've learnt, allot of DLC are ideas that either they didn't have the time to develop properly or that have been developed from the go gold period.
Of course it's about money, and yes they could delay it a few months and we get that content for free but projects such as creating a game have a period of time set for which they should be completed.
Asking for an extension or two probably happens quite a few times, but at the end of the day they game has to be released in a polished state, and then anything extra can even be cut out for ever or developed to a higher standard.
Otherwise we get a Duke Nukem Forever.
As much as I love getting some free DLC, heck I gorged on Valves Team Fortress 2 DLC allot of what is handed out for free is quality and I would happily spend money on it.
DLC is just the new expansion pack of our time. It's here to stay.
Ever heard of Borderlands? Yeah, the DLC for that game was announced a few days before that game came out too. Turns out it isn't released until a month later. Just because DLC is announced before the game comes out doesn't mean it's something they cut from the game and added as DLC. Hell, Borderlands and BioShock are published by the same company, so how about giving them the benefit of the doubt before you start making judgements. The fact of the matter is that you don't have a crystal ball and know as much about BioShock 2 as the rest of us do.
I'm not trying to sound mean or anything, and I agree that the sequel was kinda out of line, but we don't know anything about this game enough to make judgements, and that's a big problem for us gamers. All I'm saying is, don't judge BioShock 2 or it's DLC yet because we haven't played either.
I wouldn't say the sequel was out of line. That makes it look bad. In the end we get to explore a pretty awesome setting in a new way. As much as the sequel would appear unnecessary, I know their where always people looking to explore Rapture more.
And this is a way to do that.
Or its a crap game made as a money grab ;)
It doesn't bother me enough to be angry or hate the game, but I can definately see the reasoning for disliking DLC announcements before the game is even out. The main reason is simply because I don't even have the game yet and they're trying to sell me more content, concentrate on making a hit game lots of people enjoy, THEN talk about add-on content based on the strengths of the game.
It also has the secondary annoyance of exemplifying our GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE culture. We are now at a state where everyone wants more of everything and faster even if they don't know yet whether they like the first piece. MORE MORE MORE! Damn the cost, damn the value, DAMMIT I NEED MORE STUFF TO BUY! It's kind of annoying when you think about it objectively.
Yeah and these are all completely valid points.
But stuff like this is rarely an official announcement. I'm assuming the interviewer asked him if the game would hav DLC and he gave an honest reply.
I think that's when people need to loosen up. When a pre-release interview is conducted and the subject of DLC comes up of course he's gonna hype it. Theoretically he could say he can't talk about it but if it's a chance to get people excited why not?
I'm not saying it's ALWAYS this way but I think we've gotten to the point where we're so defensive the mere mention of DLC gets people all pissy.
God forbid a company is trying to make the most money possible. Last time I checked the goal in business was to make money and turn the highest profit possible. Or maybe my MBA degree is all a bunch of bullshit.
@Leon Thank you for having reasonable logic. Much appreciated.
True, people are overly quick to be annoyed by it. On my PC-focused message board there are people who act like Satan himself is behind the "evil DLC scheme."
People can be emotional.
@StingingVelvet
Well yeah Satan was behind the "evil expansion pack masquerade"
I love it when people complain about having to pay for DLC, its so cute.
Isn't Satan resonsible for games as a whole though? Hes only moving with the times you know!
Satans behind everything we love.
It's why Satan is actually god.
By extension he must also be behind the very notion of paying for games entirely, the "paid entertainment parasigm."
I guess he also invented capitalism.
Oh god we have unearthed a terrifying truth!
It was delayed.
Way to line your pockets, you better, because there won't be a bioshock 3.
I like the way you think. You are quite intelligent.
Yeh I mean its terrible right, how when expansion packs came out they would line their pockets with our money but wed have less extra content for our games, but now, extra content for games is more supported.
@Kuwajahbee
Wow its like the internet wants to mate with me today, first I get called best internet user ever and now i'm complimented :)
I'm quite impressed by people who can affect such an authoritarian tone when reciting facts they've blatantly pulled out of their ass.
