BioShock 2 controller support dropped, Internet rages photo

If you're playing BioShock 2 on the PC, don't expect to be using a controller -- the game simply doesn't support it. And the Internet is not happy about the decision.

In a 14-paged (at the time of this writing) thread on the official 2K forums, many PC gamers are voicing disappointment over the lack of support. Some are saying they canceled their orders, others have started up a petition urging for an update. The original BioShock had support for the Xbox 360 controller out of the box.

In 2K's defense, this shouldn't come as a surprise -- it's been forthcoming about the decision to drop controller support prior to release, stating "The decision was made early on not to support controllers at all in order to ensure that we got the mouse and keyboard control absolutely right." This included changing certain HUD elements to better fit the keyboard layout.

We've pinged 2K to see what its official response to the uproar is, and to see if there's any hope for PC gamers waiting for a patch. We'll keep you updated.

But seriously, man up and use a key board and mouse if you love pc so much.

Even that AvP 2000 re-release on Steam supports a 360 pad.

What? When did the internet become stupid?

Joy2Key motherfuckers.

I'd keyboard and mouse Bioshock 2, but I'm not gonna buy it, not until a price drop anyway.

I wouldn't worry they'll release it as DLC O_o. On the serious side I've played allot through it with my keyboard and mouse and the game controls like a dream so I don't get why it's a big loss, but they'll clearly fix it with a patch.

Really?!? I'm going to complain that I can't use an inferior control scheme because the game UI was tailored around a far superior control scheme. I mean seriously, where's my atari joystick support. Shame on 2k.

I don't understand the problem. 2K doesn't need to support a controller in order for you to use one. Just use 1 of the million software apps out there to assign keys to your controller.

This is hilarious! PC gamers always get on their high chair about how spending 2000$ on a PC to play essentially the same game you can play on a 200$ console, is entirely worth it cause of the control scheme!

Now they can't control it as if it were an xbox and they are again in an outrage.

note: Im sure Ill get yelled at for not noting that a typical high end PC can play games at better resolutions, and higher graphics settings, than an xbox as well.. but COME ON

*claps* Bravo, 2K. If you wanna play with a gamepad, play on a console. There's no good reason to NOT use mouse and keyboard for FPS games on a PC.

I know a lot of people that play consoles and prefer controllers so I don't believe there is a "best" way to play, it's what ever you are comfortable with. But as a PC gamer myself who prefers mouse and keyboard I assumed most others would be the same o_O

"This is hilarious! PC gamers always get on their high chair about how spending 2000$ on a PC to play essentially the same game you can play on a 200$ console, is entirely worth it cause of the control scheme!"

Nobody is saying it's worth it because of a control scheme. That's hardly the only reason to game on a PC. It just happens to be a fact that a mouse has more precision. That's a sidebar. The main reason (in my opinion) to game on a PC is that they can do anything, because they're a friggen computer. Such as.. get around this problem of 2K not supporting a controller.

"Now they can't control it as if it were an xbox and they are again in an outrage."

4 People on the internet who don't realize they can circumvent their problem with a small software app is hardly "they". Trust me.. most PC gamers will never even realize that 2K doesn't support a controller in Bioshock 2.

I know I love saving ten dollars on a game by getting it for PC instead of console. All I had to do was spend a grand on a rig and buy a controller so its almost the exact same thing. So simple, I amaze myself.

@ DeusPayne

just because you don't like joypads, doesn't make them inferior. they may not be as accurate for aiming, but movement is better, and there are plenty of couch gamers that find M+KB inconvenient to use. i personally have grown to hate gaming at a desk when i could be on my couch staring at a 120" projected screen.

@ runtheplacered

i've been using pinnacle game profiler for a long time now. it works better than xpadder, but it's still not as good as proper pad support. analogue movement feels restricted at best, and there is no support for analogue triggers or vibration.

amazing amount of "I LIKE THIS AND I'M RIGHT SO WHY DON'T YOU LIKE IT" in this thread. do you people not even read your own comments?

I don't know if PC gamers declaring that they will not buy a game due to lack of features is any worse than the masses of console gamers that whine about "low" review scores all the time.

Actually, it's better, because it actually has to do with actually playing and enjoying the game!

Seriously, I'm NOT a PC gamer and I understand that something like this has a direct effect on the gaming experience for PC gamers. This is complain-worthy compared to a lot of issues console gamers tend to complain about.

Didn't one company (I think it was the guys who did the ill-fated Shadowrun) have to add a huge aiming aid for the 360 version just so they could compete properly with those who used the PC version with KB+M?

I'm not sure what I think of this story. On the one hand controller support out of the box is pretty standard, but on the other hand, how lazy are these gamers? Ignoring that KB+M offers more control, there are things out there like XPadder, as mentioned above. Those who use a controller will, in the majority of cases, have a rebinding program to use on games that don't support controllers as standard. So they're whining because they're too lazy and want someone else to do the work, is that it?

Anyhoo, I thought GfWL games were supposed to support at least the 360 controller?

Big shame 2K, you should fix it asap.

Sure people, keyboard and mouse are more precise, but they still largely require the user to play their games glued in front of a monitor. Here's the interest bit, a lot of people who are gamers out there, work in front of PC monitors all day. When they get home, they want to play but give their eyes a rest.

Hooking up a PC to a HDTV, is piss easy these days and offers more comfort. In the same regard using an 360 USB controller is another form of ease and comfort, and lets face it is a far better all round interface to experience the most games possible. That's right, you try playing SFIV online with your keyboard and mouse, and see how much you win.

An ap might work, but its 2K's game and responsibility, they should sort it.

I remember lots of people using controllers for the first game because the mouse control was awkward and slow or something. I can understand where the anger over this is coming from, then, but it sounds like they fixed the mouse control for this game so it shouldn't really be an issue.

If you really prefer the gamepad maybe you should just join us console kiddies :)

This is disappointing, though it does not affect me. I will not be buying BioShock 2, and if I did it would be for 360 since that's what I played BioShock 1 on. I consider myself a big PC gamer, but still prefer having the option of using a controller. There is a significant portion of gamers that prefer to play that way, and I don't think it's smart to ignore them. Especially since the first game did support it on PC.

The bigger screw up is the aspect ratio problem. Something the first game had to get a patch to fix, you'd think they wouldn't fuck it up again the 2nd time around. Oh well, wait for yet another patch to fix something that should never have been screwed up in the first place.

The problem is people like PC games for all the extra options. Taking away an option whether or not you actually use them is never good. Anyways Bioshock 2 looks better on PC and I was looking forward to playing it on my 40 inch HDTV.

Emulation software can't give you controller rumble as if the game support it natively, and IMHO rumble is a MAJOR advantange of gamepad over mouse.

I love the comments about PC gamers spending all kinds of cash to essentially play the same game.

Anyone dare to compare Xbox 360 versions of games to their (properly released) PC versions? (Inferior "ports" don't count.) 'Show me again how FO3 on the 360 or PS3 compares to its PC version.

I love all those mods you can use on the 36...oh wait.

I can still play all my older PC games on my current PC. Can you play PS2 games on a PS3? How many Xbox games can you (or would want to) play on your 360?

Check all the things you can play and do on a console, compare it to a PC, then get back to me.

I played the Bioshock demo, tried it with a controller and was horrified by it turning into a solid replica of the 360 version (omitting the advanced settings... because people using a controller don't need those). I'd be inclined to prefer the controller just because I am use to it from Bioshock and the controls are a handful.

@Retrofraction: I've yet to see a proper PC driver for 360 chatpad. I have a wireless receiver for PC and chatpad, if I can get it to work with my HTPC that would be a very cheap solution for portable K/M. So if anyone interested in "modding" that, please do so, would be much appreciated!

Lol the PC elites are out are they? What difference does it make to you if people like playing with controllers? Is it somehow impacting your enjoyment of the game?

Also, as for the controller issue. Granted K&M are usually the best. Sometimes I use a joypad for some games. All depends on the game, IMHO. Even though most people would say "WTFX controller on PC whyyyyy," but why not support it at all? Doesn't make sense. Just laziness.

I just don't understand what all the this feuding between control schemes is about. Why do K+M people assume that their way is better? Its all all matter of preference. I grew up on consoles. I was never a PC gamer until I built rig powerful enough to handle games. Because I spent most of my childhood with buttons and sticks, I find it more comfortable and easier to play with them on PC. This doest mean I don't see the advantages of K+M but I just play better with a controller.

@Robotic: For example, controllers have analog movement and trigger-like fire button, and vibration. Yes it's not as accurate or convenient as K/M, but some people prefer immersion over precision, especially in single-player games.
