Bionic Commando swings on by, sold only 27,000 copies photo

Perhaps you saw what we thought of Capcom's Bionic Commando. We didn't give it a terrible score. It's just that it wasn't anything special to us. It didn't commando our attention, you might say.

In fact, this reboot of the beloved NES title didn't seem to do much for gamers in general. In its opening month, the NPD data shows sales figures of only 27,000 copies sold -- the combined total for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. This is surprising for what looked to be a pretty high-profile game. I thought we wanted a new Bionic Commando, didn't we?

Gamasutra reminds that U.S. retail games sales were down 23 percent in May, so that may have been part of the game's poor performance. But it may serve as a lesson for companies looking to spit out retro reboots. It still needs to be a good game, right?

Capcom make too many good games to get away with making a mediocre game I guess.

this is one of the few games that actually may have been better on the Wii than the more powerful systems. Grappling around may have been fun.

"It didn't commando our attention, you might say."

Somebody give this man a promotion.

I didn't really have any sort of nostalgia for Bionic Commando, since I never touched the series until playing BC: Rearmed a few weeks ago. I've heard bad things about this new game from pretty much every reliable source I turn to, so I don't think I'll be picking this up at all.

Maybe people were more occupied with the vastly superior Bionic Commando Rearmed. Or they decided that some things just don't belong on a 3D landscape. Like certain blue hedgehogs and various other characters.

I dont think the arm mechanic would have done well on the Wii.
I bought it and have enjoyed running around and tossing people with the arm.
I almost wished they kept the speech bubbles from Rearmed; definitely the humor. I wonder how its sales did compared to BC:Rearmed.

I had like .5% interest in this game and after seeing it in action that .5% went down to 0%. I am never ever going to own this game as the PSN rearmed version was more my cup of tea.

I will never pay for hope if the game is bad/mediocre. I loved Rearmed so this might actually benefit me since it sends Capcom the message of 2D=money, 3D=failure.

This is a joke right? Only 27,000 copies total. That just doesn't sound right at all. Are you sure there isn't another zero that's missing from that number. I mean the reviews were mediocre, but 27,000 just seems monumentally to low.

This game came out already?

So far off my radar.

I was a Sega boy back in the day.

I was relatively excited for this for a while but the timing kind of killed it for me. I knew I was going to be buying both Red Faction AND Prototype within a couple weeks and that multi-player demo kind of deflated my anticipation (I was actually looking forward to that part). The funny thing is, I went in to Best Buy the day it came out (on the Wednesday actually) and they didn't have ANY copies. Not even a place holder. So I bought Mass Effect again instead.

Wow! A mediocre game had mediocre sales. Astounding! Sorry but the game had way to many flaws to sell well. It seemed like everyone probably would have despised it if it didn't have Bionic Comando as the title. Which is funny because it's an insult to the orginal games!

I was really looking forward to this one. I think I'll buy it once it lands in the bargain bin. Poor Ben Judd and GRIN :(

Who would've thought a Bionic Commando game in 3D with swinging and Mike Patton's voice acting would go wrong? Really disappointing!

It's not a matter of lacking nostalgia. This game threw nostalgia out the window.

Instead of the cool, shades-wearing Rad Spencer we grew up with, we got some white guy with dreads. Instead of an over-the-top action story that doesn't take itself seriously, we got some overly dramatic and poorly voiced plot that screams "trying too hard." Instead of a real hero, we got another angsty, cliche anti-hero who's "been betrayed." PLEASE! Don't even get me started on the hotdog arm...

Was there any way this game wasn't going to fail? Look at Rearmed. That game sold like hotcakes. There are plenty of people that wanted a new Bionic Commando. They just didn't want a game that crapped all over their fond memories of the original. And yeah, it would have helped if the actual gameplay lived up to expectations as well.

While this is the wrong one to sell poorly (Rearmed can go get fucked by a retard's smile), I'm not going to cry over it. I don't have any reason to care about it. Besides, the less money Capcom makes, the happier I am.

Hopefully developers will start to realize that there is nothing wrong with "classic" gameplay. Not every game needs to be a massive 3d open world with fancy cutscenes and a dark story line. Rearmed just added HD graphics and some tweaks and balancing - best game I've played in months. I want to see some more big studios invest in smaller games. The investment/return ratio has to be a hell of a lot higher.

TMNTHD, Street Fighter 2 HD, Castle Crashers, Boy and His Blob, NSMB Wii, BC:Rearmed, etc... lets not forget the top-down shooter resurgence that came about when XBLA first came online.

I agree with guitaratomik, timing killed it. Prototype is taking up all my time right now, and red faction is next on the list. Perhaps if it was an open world game, it might have squeaked in, but I'm a sucker for open world like that.

Unless a game is absolutely terrible, it doesn't ever deserve to sell only 27,000 combined sales. This is really sad, and I hope it sells more, but it really was asking for it when Capcom decided to release it next to Red Faction and Prototype. I played the multi-player demo, and it wasn't bad. I was considering getting this, but I doubt it'll have much replay value because it looks like nobody play online.

Hardcore games do not belong on the ps360.
the core is dead.
ps360 is a haven for casual gaming.
ps360 is killing the core.
M$ and $ony do not cater the core.
It sold less than Viva pinata.
It should be on the Wii.

See what Wii have to put up to.

People always say that 3rd Party "hardcore" games sell well on the 360 and PS3 no matter what, but no that's not the case. If its a shit game, than its not going to sell well on any system. So It has nothing to do with the system it self.

You know what makes this even sadder? Valkyria Chronicles sold over three times that amount on just PS3, and that game's sales were considered totally dismal at the time.

But hey, VC's sales have since increased, so maybe Bionic Commando will too.

Besides, I think they just banked too much on brand name selling this game. Bionic Commando, hate to say it, really isn't that big of a brand to anybody outside of hardcore gamers that grew up with the NES and happened to play it. Some random dude at Wal-Mart isn't going to look at Bionic Commando and be like "shit, they finally made a new one? I'll take two!"

I think that Grin took on too many projects at the same time. Had they focused on this, and left Terminator Salvation alone, things would have been better.

This is why some say, that these two games play a similar way.
whatisdelicious's Avatar
whatisdelicious at 06/15/2009 12:29
And Wanted wasn't too long ago either. And after playing TS and just the Wanted demo, those games feel very similar too. GRIN is just not a studio that can handle that many games at once, I guess. They should just focus on one or two at a time to make sure shit like this doesn't happen.

Again, Capcom had nothing to do with this outside of publishing it, Grin made it, the same people who made re-armed.

This for the people that keep saying BUT CAPCOM, blame Grin, Grin is the devil here.

And yea, I'm not shocked at all, Re-armed outside of being an incredible remake was also pretty goofy and over the top with some of Spencer's lines, suddenly we get this and Spencer's some grim and gritty guy with a truckload of angst.

Then there's all the flaws the game...

Big open world!!

But there's invisible radiation everywhere that's hard to spot and you die instantly if you swing to far into it.

CHECKPOINTS!!

But they are spaced VERY poorly and sometimes you need to kill every enemy in the area before they happen.

BUGS AND GLITCHES

The usual assortment, freezing, getting stuck, enemies getting stuck, etc.

Not even gonna get into the atrocious story.

The swinging is the best thing the game had, they did it perfectly but everything else felt really poor, the thing is that people do want an updated Bionic Commando, they just want all the charm the NES, Gameboy and Re-armed game have, not grim-dark hero number eleventy billion and one.

I played quite a bit of Bionic Commando, and, while not being an /amazing/ game, still feel it also wasn't bad enough to garner only 27,000 copies. I'm pretty sure it had more to do with the economy in its current state than anything else...
