Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

It was only announced yesterday, and already opinions are highly divided on Capcom's Bionic Commando remake. So far voices tend to fall on either side of a binary split, either gushing with the misty-eyed enthusiasm of a nostalgic cockney Blitz-survivor, or becoming instantly disheartened and holding fast to the "emo game is emo" maxim as they gaze upon the update's new dark and gritty (yawn) stylings.

That latter camp have certainly got a point. There's a small happy shard of light still left in a corner of my heart that remembers when games were like, you know, fun, and as such I'm sick to the back teeth of this current self-defeating need to appear "mature" via the use of inherently juvenile obsessions with violence and dark, grizzled anti-heroes. But who knows, maybe I'm just a big frilly ponce.

Either way, BC's trailer - which first apeared earlier today before being hastily pulled - provides us with all the necessary ticked boxes. Over-acted, gruff and despairing voice-over? Check. Scenes of gray urban destruction? Check. The same clunky, lived-in, militaristic sci-fi art style as around eight million other games out there right now? Check, check, check.

But it's not all bad. While what I assume to be the gameplay sections in the trailer's second half positively reek of a re-skinned Spider-Man game, some of the wrecked city architecture looks pretty epic in places, the forest areas on show towards the end are suitably lush, and you can't completely hate a trailer that ends with a giant robo-snake fight. Just please Capcom. let's get out of the grey city and into the countryside quick, and ideally, could you throw in a few song and dance routines and/or kittens in clown suits too? That'd be great.

It's like watching Peter Parker as Hellboy trying to sound like Solid Snake. Amusing to say the least... Can't wait to rent this bad boy :P

Attention, idiots referring to this as a Spiderman rip-off:
You are idiots. Yes, this game is derivative. It is derived from Bionic Commando. The swinging looks almost exactly the same, only in 3D.

Well, if it's as good as Spiderman 2 for moving around, has better combat and more varied environments, I'm not sure how it can go wrong in my book. I looked at him swinging his way about the levels and it's Spidey with one web-slinger, plus a gun and more destructible environments. If it is, I'll love it!

Could this be Spiderman 2 vs Lost Planet?

Anyone who still holds a candle for old school and fun gameplay are only going to get hurt in the end. the classics never re-deliver quite the way we wish they would so it's your own fault for being angry with B.C.

the countryside?

Who the fuck wants to swing around on low hanging tree branches?

I loved the shit outta the original. I still hold my completion of that game at 9 years old one of my greatest triumphs. but I know I cant expect the world from this remake. and although it's not spectacular the game certainly doesn't look like a pile of suck. far from it. Its a solid start to what i hope will be worth my 20 year wait.

They should have had the courage to go down a stylised / neon "No More Heroes" kinda route. Hate the characters design (if your going to have photorealism and physics APPLY IT TO THE MAIN CHARACTER DESIGN*, but apart from character design critique, I hope those swinigng sections arent as linear and 'hotpoint' restricted as they look, would be cool to be able to navigate the terrain as you like - ie a platformer, as in the original. Ill hold judgement untill more shows up.

But is is looking next-gen "meh".

* i mean c'mon theres no effing way that arm is anywhere near light enought to stay attached to him. Did he pull it of a mech or what.

Clark, you'd have to be blind not to see that movement in the game looks identical to movement in the spiderman game. I really didn't like any of the spiderman movie games, so I might not like bio com, but I'll at least give it a chance :P

I actually liked it!

Cm'on! You all give Contra such high praises for it's marketing being very 80s gruffish(I'm not talking about the gameplay, I'm very happy with the retro-look). This was a game about a one-man army against Nazis people!! NAZIs!!! Hitler's effing face asploded!

And now you complain because it's too dark?? The exploding face just didn't seem dark on the original due to the pixel count maybe?

As for the gameplay, who knows, it may be great. It would be hard to tell from a video trailer in any case. And those complaining about originality aren't getting this is a fan service: plain and simple. They even got the music right.

And you don't like dystopian ee-vil looking cityscapes, there are plenty of titles coming out this year that don't have it. Buy those.
