Bionic Commando Rearmed rated, not for the children photo

Bionic Commando Rearmed, Capcom's Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network revamp of the classic 8-bit title, is nearing release, folks. But make sure the kids are asleep -- the game has received ratings in multiple territories, and it looks like the folks at Capcom/GRIN are pulling no punches:

North America (ESRB) - M
Europe (PEGI) - 18+
Germany - 16
Australia - M
Japan - B

That's right, Bionic Command Rearmed as received mature ratings across the board. The game's producer, Ben Judd, understands the risks in not compromising the game for a softer rating.

"It's a gamble and again, this along with the $10 price tag is not the best business decision," he writes on the game's official blog. "But then, one of the things that made those 2D games so great was their innovation. And innovation is founded upon taking risks. No doubt, when the original team made an infamous dictator as the original bad guy and showed his demise in explosive 8-bit glory, they too were taking some serious risks."

In an email to me, Judd also went out of his way to point out the hot new boss theme music currently thumping on the site's music player. The verdict? Hot. My excitement for this game is reaching dangerous levels.

I'm so confused. This is just a 2D game, right? How the heck did it get 18+?

Dude, if this got an M rating anyway then why take out the Nazi imagery and storyline? Ugh, what the fuck, Judd?

Cool that they're not watering it down.

That said, I don't see what the big "risk" is. It's a downloadable title, nobody has ever been carded trying to buy points cards, and most parents are clueless/don't care about parental controls. If anything the M rating is going to help sell the game to kiddies who aren't familiar with the original...

Awesome. Some of those 8-bit games could be pretty graphic if you use your imagination. Thanks to Bionic Commando Rearmed we no longer have to!!

This is truly suprising for a 2D scroller. +1 to Capcom for having the balls to make it so - I'm officially no longer on the fence on this one.

Zombie, I'd call taking out the Neo-Nazi storyline and imagery "watering down."

But the original US version of the game didn't have Nazi imagery. It did have an exploding Hitler head though. I'd say he is being faithful to the original US version that we all know and love.

Who here actually played the original version in Japanese? I know I didn't...

Besides, the second the game has Nazis, the game would be unsellable in Germany...

The developer justifies the Mature rating of a remake, with innovation?

This had better mean I can grapple someone's head off. If I can pull a 100-lb steel drum over to me, why not a human head?

Am I the only one, who noticed that the game is 16+ in germany while it's 18+ pretty much everywhere else on this world. Maybe the german rating board isn't as stupid as people think it is..

You know how to make this game sellable in Germany? Take out the Nazi imagery, and keep the imagery in for the rest of the world. Problem solved.

I didn't even realise this game had any significant levels of gore — let alone enough to get it an 18 rating.

Everyone knows the game wasn't a hit in Japan and what everyone else in the world got to play was the Nazi reference-rid US version, so that's the version that everyone here knows and loves. The game became a cult classic outside of Japan which probes that having swastikas in the game wasn't what made it good. Still, the ambiguity regarding whether or not Hitler was in the game (his name was Master D but there was no doubt who he looked like) probably helped a lot, hehe.

However, no one from the west can claim that this game should have Nazis in it because that's not how the west got to know this game in the first place.

BTW, thanks for posting the link to the music, Mabec!
