Binding of Isaac: Rebirth team looking for fan feedback

Dec 02 // Jonathan Holmes

How do you want your naked crying child to look?

[Update: New screen featuring the GBA-stlye art direction straight from Edmund McMillen's twitter. This is definitely my new favorite.]

I'm still freaking out about The Binding of Isaac coming to consoles. I loved the original, but given the nature of my job, it's very hard for me to game on PC without getting distracted by something work related (emails, news, IMs, etc.). Handheld consoles are the place where I can most distance myself from the world of responsibility. That's part of why I'm hoping that Isaac will make its way to the Wii U or the 3DS as well as the PS Vita. Though Nintendo passed on the game earlier this year, I'm hearing that they may be rethinking that decision.

From the looks of it, the game will be able to run easily on those consoles. It might even be possible to run on the Sega Genesis. As promised, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth will employ a "16-bit" art style, and the developers are asking for your input on how exactly that look will be implemented. Isaac creator Edmund McMillen has posted four Rebirth mock-ups on his blog, and is asking you to tell him which you like the most. Personally, I like the character proportions in screen 1, the user-interface style on screen 2, the crisp feel of screen 3, and the environment design of screen 4. I wonder if I can have it all?

For me, "having it all" would be asking a lot -- more so than for most. After Dtoid News Editor Conrad Zimmerman proposed that I make a personal appearance in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, I can't shake the need to see myself in the game. An anonymous fan even created a mock-up of how I might look as one of Isaac's power-ups. Though it's unlikely that I'll end up included, here's to hoping that a sprite editor is included as feature in BoI: Rebirth. Then we could turn the entire cast of the game into a legion of washed-up reality show cast members from the late '90s. That would be so alternative.
