Billboard: Rock Band may have 5,000 playable songs by year's end ... wait, what? photo

While Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos has stated that the company has no plans to release a Rock Band 3 in 2009, that doesn't mean the music is going to stop. Sure, we expected the weekly downloadable content to continue to pour into the Rock Band Music Store. But there might be more music coming that we could have even imagined.

According to a Billboard article (via Yahoo! News), "MTV said it plans to increase the number of available song this year to as many as 5,000." Yes, that's five-thousand. Five zero zero zero. Currently, between retail discs (Rock Band, Rock Band 2, and the Wal-Mart-exclusive AC/DC disc), there are close to 600 playable for the game Harmonix have often referred to as a platform.

Doing the math, that means we'd be looking at close to 100 individual tracks being released weekly. Quite frankly, that sounds pretty ridiculous. Unless Harmonix/MTV plan to flood the Rock Band music store with content, iTunes-style, it's hard to imagine they'll reach their goal. I contacted MTV to clarify, but haven't heard back from them at the time of writing.

So, uh, what 4400 songs would you like to see come to Rock Band in 2009?

I bet you anything that if Harmonix actually comes through with that number, only 5 of the songs will be great or what the people wanted.

Maybe they'll get around to diversifying the lineup to be more than "all the different types of songs that white people play". Nine Inch Nails to Jimmy Buffet but still no James Brown, Chuck Berry, Prince, P-Funk, or Bob Marley.

I would give it a complete make-over. Put the Rock back in Rock Band. (Do not, I haven't played Rock Band and therefor don't know what music is available but I've seen some of the DLC and thought that was a load of bullcrap)
I would like to see more:
Iron Maiden
Balzac
The Misfits
Guttermouth
Hatebreed
Agnostic Front
The Human Abstract
Pantera
Sylosis
Mad Caddies
and so on...

And maybe some Game related music. Would be awesome to play Katamari Damacy songs in Rock Band!

My only gripe is if it is to be loaded with this many songs, reduce the price a bit. I can't afford to download 300 songs at $2 a pop! If not releasing RB3, cut the songs to about a dollar to give the same cost, I'll spend $60 and pick up 80 or so songs of my choice.

They'll hopefully add songs in other languages. I'd love seeing some rock en español in there!

bah, Chad, DISNEY? Come awn!

I've caved, but I'll list by band [again] rather than by song, because that would just be too intents.

I'm totally down with Chuck Berry.
But what I'm after is a far more METAL line up.

I'd say Apocalyptica, but it doesn't seem appropriate because they all play cellos :\
But, I want more Avenged 7x, some Avian, Blind Guardian, Bloodsimple, Dark Empire, Demons & Wizards, Dimmu Borgir, more Dream Theater, Evergrey, Five Finger Death Punch, Gates of Winter, Iced Earth, more In Flames, some Jeff Loomis stuff to match the other badass guitar instrumentals a la Joe Satriani, more Megadeth, some Mushroomhead, Nevermore, Orphaned Land, Persuader, Pink Floyd, Pyramaze, Raintime, Savage Circus, some Sonata Arctica, Symphorce, Tad Morose, The Black Mages, The Eternal, some fuckin' THERION, some Type O Negative, and Zero Hour.

And (you may have noticed they're in alphabetical order) those are just the bands who's albums I own. Theres still tons more that I would like to see!

I'm not even so picky about sub-genre when I'm playing them rather than listening. Bring on the Death and Black metal, and TONS of Power Metal, give me Acropolis, give me Elven King, more Testament, Gamma Ray, Seventh Wonder, Martriden, Srenity, OPETH, OTEP, Sabaton, Grave Digger, ReinXeed, Manowar, Circle II Circle, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Firewind, Draconian!

I want to be balls deep in songs that are going to whoop the shit out of me.

P.S.

Also, CKY and more Rage.

That would be awesome. I would probably be able to find at least one really obscure song that no one else is interested in that I could place high on the leaderboard in. Thus accomplishing all of my life's goals in one swift move.

I want more classic rock and 80's rock, dammit. It's great that they've explored Boston pretty fully, what about all the other great bands? Shit, what about some fucking Dire Straits? I want Money for Nothing and Sultans of Swing, damn it.

Funny story, I was going through 80's rock tracks at work today with a co-worker and talking about how there were so many songs I want to have show up as Rock Band DLC...and then I made a comment about how they needed to hurry up and put out about 1500 songs I want. They must have been listening. I can only assume the other 3500 are a combination of all the songs everyone else wants. THANKS FOR LISTENING, HARMONIX. I LOVE YOU.

Walk may be a great Pantera song, but it would just be boring to play. We do need some Cowboys from Hell and Revolution is My Name though.

I just missed LA for a moment. I lived a few blocks from Amoeba, and I hit it up at least once a week.

That Amoeba is the best in the chain, and one of the best music stores I've ever had the privilege of shopping at.
