Bill Gates confirms Natal technology is coming to PC photo

In a recent interview with Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, CNET was privy to some pretty interesting information regarding the oft-discussed Project Natal. Gates mentioned that the technology being added to the Xbox 360 is something that we can expect to see a lot more of, and talked about a future where it would be a part of all consoles, televisions and PCs. More from that interview:

I'd say a cool example of that, that you'll see... in a little over a year, is this (depth) camera thing." Gates said it was not just for games, "but for media consumption as a whole, and even if they connect it up to Windows PCs for interacting in terms of meetings, and collaboration, and communication.

In fact, Gates mentioned that the technology is already commonly used in their own offices:

I think the value is as great for if you're in the home, as you want to manage your movies, music, home system type stuff, it's very cool there ... and I think there's incredible value as we use that in the office connected to a Windows PC. So Microsoft research and the product groups have a lot going on there, because you can use the cost reduction that will take place over the years to say, why shouldn't that be in most office environments.

Can you imagine waving your hands around in front of your computer to tab between windows? It could be all Minority Report around these parts sooner than you think.

Actually, I think you might be reading too much in there Colette.
Bill didn't really state that they're using it in the MS Office. he tstated that it has immense value is used in a office with a Windows PC.

Not especially practical. For some users it'll make life easier, but for standard day to day use, mouse and keyboard isn't going to go away. Not with the abstractions PC UIs are built around. It'd be too inefficient to use pet technologies like Natal.

Although little men dancing around like retards in office cubicles would just be hilarious, I'm sure.

This makes more sense. See, if I were Microsoft, I'd get the technology up and running in Windows first. I'm still skeptical on the whole idea of motion supplementing/replacing the traditional controller, but I think that, done right, something like Natal could absolutely outdo the mouse in everyday Windows goings-on.

I'm already set up with the duel-monitors at work... Natal as well?! Things might get a little crazy around here.

Natal would make things great, sure you don't need it for every task, and there are alot of things it would be useless on. But when you consider the applications for catalogging, monitoring, editing and more it could be great. Though I don't expect that to happen for several generations of the product, but its a good first step.

Actually Natal seems to have practical use for non-gaming purposes. This news about Natal for computers has gotten me interested.

Excuse my fanboyism, but Natal is already looking way more pathetic than the Nintendo Wii.

Well who didn't see this coming from a mile away? They're probably working it into Windows 7 right now, so it will be ready for late 2010 to integrate it in to the OS. Either that, or maybe they're working on a Media Center version of Windows 7, that will take full advantage of Natal.

Natal technology on the television, PC, or even on the Xbox could be highly useful for common passive actions. For instance, say you're called into the next room but can't find the remote to pause what you're watching. One of the possible features could be to automatically pause playback, set your IM status to away, increase playback volume, or start recording to the DVR when it detects that you're no longer in viewing range. And then, once you return, automatically resume playback, set IM status to available, decrease playback volume, or end DVR recording. It's convenient and doesn't user active user input to work. And I'm sure there are many more passive action features that could be implemented (e.g.: playing notifications or alerts on-screen based upon where you're looking on-screen so that you don't happen to miss them.)

@ Chronic Logic

that's what I was gonna say. some Minority Report-type shtuff is definitely more interesting than whatever games they may have planned for this. unless they make a game solely based on slapping bitches.
