Big surprise: Nintendo makes more money, uses the word 'trillion' photo

While other gaming Web sites rushed to blast out the news of Nintendo's profits more than doubling this year, we here at Destructoid took our sweet ass time with it, saving it for the mid-afternoon, post-lunch blah time slot. How's that for service?

So yeah, Nintendo made more money -- big surprise, right? Actually, the numbers are pretty impressive. Riding on the back of Wii and the DS, Nintendo has managed to double up in a a half year's time, jumping from 54.3 billion yen to 132.4 billion yen. That's over a 130 percent increase!  Operating profit shot straight up from last year's 67.1 billion to 188.8 billion yen. "Printing money" is so yesterday: Nintendo is money.

How exactly did they get there? It's easy: they moved 65.81 million Wii consoles and 259.48 million Nintendo DS units. If you sell that many of anything (sponges, paperclips), you'll be sitting pretty, but selling $250 game consoles and actually making a profit does wonders, eh?

As we guessed they would yesterday, Nintendo raised its full year forecast numbers, aiming for 1.5 trillion yen (USD 13.1 billion) in net sales. Yes, I said "trillion."

Where exactly did they move 65.81 million Wii consoles? Or was that just a number he threw out there to be funny?

This just in, Nintendo uses some of their excess profits to buy Bungie and have them develop a Marathon game for the DS.

I'm lying about that, obviously, but one does have to wonder what good uses they're going to put all this cash towards.

Remember back when Pokemon was the only thing keeping Nintendo afloat, and even the historically dominant portable market was about to be subsumed by the N-Gage and the PSP? When people said Nintendo would never have a competetive console again?

I remember that time.
Who's laughing now?

I knew the Wii would be successful... but this is insane. Nobody will even be able to stop Nintendo at this rate. They will take over the world.

I gotta' say. They jumped into something new and it worked out. After the failure that was Gamecube, it's nice to see that they're doing good.

I'm still tired of Reggie. If he's the face of Nintendo, then Nintendo's ass ugly. And his comments are ass, too. He never says anything that doesn't end with him looking like a jerk ass or a fucking hypocrite.

Good for Nintendo. I am sooooo glad that it's not Microsoft sitting on top of the money pile. I hate their business practices so much and I don't want even want to think what my favorite hobby would be like if they were on top.

Nintendo did a couple of things right such as the price, the marketing and not getting tangled up in the mess of having multiple SKUs.

Nintendo revealed its official worldwide hardware sales.

DS hardware - sold 13.35 million sales in the last six months

Japan: 19.71 million
North America: 16.06 million
Worldwide: 17.88

Total: 53.64 million

Wii hardware - sold 7.33 million in the last six months

Japan: 3.67 million
North America: 5.46 million
Worldwide: 4.04 million

Total: 13.17 million

Wii software: 65.81 million

Mario Party 8 alone selling 2.89 million copies.

DS Software: 259.48 million sales

Top sellers among its games are Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, with combined sales now at 12.17 million copies worldwide since their launch. Brain Age 1 and Brain Age 2 sold at a larger total of 17.19 million copies.

Come the end of this fiscal year, Nintendo predict its net sales to be at 1.55 trillion (US$ 13.59 billion) with a net income of ¥ 275.0 billion (US .41 billion).

@IceMax,

Don't spread MORE wrong information!

The Wii has moved ~65 million units of SOFTWARE, which has just been misquoted in this article to say "consoles" (also, the DS sold ~259 million SOFTWARE units as well.)

The Wii has sold about 12-13 million total CONSOLES depending on who you talk to or what figures you go by. I'm pretty sure it just recently (like in the last few days) just topped the 360 in total sales.

C'mon Dale! Edit this so there's not as much confusion.

That's good for Nintendo. Now they can start working on games that surpass their 360 counterparts. I want a Nintendo developed FPS with 4 player local and online co-op in a sandbox like environment. Think Crysis or Far Cry 2 but with co-operative play. That is once they finish off porting all the Marios they have been developing in the last 6 years. I really want to see something that me go "Wod the 360 and PS3 could never match that!" Oh and "Disaster - Day of Crisis" is not one of those titles.

FYI, Ninendo, get us a flight arcade game surpassing Ace Combat will ya. We Wii owners are kind of starved of flight games. And no, PilotWings doesn't count. You have all the funds you need to make Wii games that surpass their 360 and PS3 counterparts in art sytle, physics, game lenghts, environmental interaction, advanced AI, et cetera. No excuses. You have the money, now use it!!!

I wonder if MS and Sony will adopt this crazy 'profit based model' next gen?

The best part is that Nintendo is keeping MS and Sony on their toes, meaning lower prices, more games, and everyone wins. =D

I'm still hoping Sega says "Surprise bitches!" and drops a new console outa no where.

@IceMax,

I forgive you =-)

Actually, I was in the same boat as you when I first read that. I thought to myself "my god... Nintendo IS taking over the world!" and then I realized that it took the PS2 5 years to hit a 100 million and figured out those numbers would have to be CRAZY to be true.

Also, I'd refuse to believe a system had sold that many units without me owning one ;)
