Big names behind Dark Souls soundtrack photo

Demon's Souls featured what was arguably one of the best soundtracks of 2009, and after playing the demo build of Dark Souls at E3 this past June I was pretty certain I was hearing the return of composer Shinsuke Kida with his powerful orchestral score.  As it turns out, I was wrong, and a rather big name composer from Japan took over composition duties for Dark Souls and even managed to bring in a familiar vocalist in the process.

The man responsible for the game's soundtrack is Motoi Sakuraba, one of Japan's most prolific game composers known for his progressive rock influences and his soundtracks for the Tales franchise, Mario Sports, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, and many other titles (just check out his VGMdb profile).  Based on the samples we linked to a few weeks ago, however, it's interesting to hear how he continues with the same style established by Kida instead of relying on his progressive rock background.  His work with a live string ensemble and choir is impressive, and he even brought along NieR vocalist Emi Evans to sing on the ending theme.  I can't wait to hear how this all works in the game!

Are you looking forward to Dark Souls next week, and does this news have any sway as to whether or not you'll spring for the limited edition that contains the full 72-minute soundtrack?

I'm painfully torn between getting this and Rage this coming Tuesday. I get the feeling from the comments I'm seeing around here that most of you feel the no-brainer choice is Dark Souls, and it's certainly a good choice, but I grew up with id software and I have a huge amount of respect for them.

I'll probably not make my choice until in actually walk into the game store... but seriously, this is the best kind of problem to have. Goddamn good day to be a gamer.

I didn't like Demon Souls enough to be interested in Dark Souls, but Emi Evans has my attention. I love the Nier Soundtracks, and might have to spring for this one... Sakuraba isn't half bad, either!

I have to preorder this now... I didn't even LIKE (yet I love... still traded it in out of sheer frustration) Demon's Souls but but soundtrack. Also Collector's Edition bonuses are too nifty to pass up.

That is good to know. You can also make a post on the composers working on Soul Calibur 5:

The composers from CIA are Hiroki Kikuta, Cris Velasco and Inon Zur. Look them up! They’re very famous artists in the field!

Hiroki Kikuta, creator of Koudelka, also composed for Secret of Mana
Cris Velasco from God of War
Inon Zur from Dragon Age and others.

Get Dark Souls. The reviews are in: it's good, and it's long.

Rage - the jury is still out. Additionally, who knows how long the SP will be, and how long the MP will sustain a community (especially on consoles). Now I'm pretty excited too, but Dark Souls is a no-brained IMO; and I grew up with id.

I envy you. I wish I could get both two but I'm trying as hard as I can to pace myself over the next couple of months. Lookit...

This Coming Tuesday: Rage and Dark Souls
Two Weeks Later: Arkham City and Ratchet and Clank - All 4 One
One Week Later: House of the Dead Overkill and BF3
One Week Later: Uncharted 3 and Sonic Generations
One Week Later: FUCKING SKYRIM and Saints Row The Third

My head might literally explode in a fine mist of blood and grey matter. What's a gamer to do? Seriously, I ask you. What the fuck is a gamer to do?

This is coming from early reports of outlets getting 80 hours in and loving it, and the hour and a half Gisnt Bomb quick look.

Conrad also seems to be loving it based on his tweets. I've read some translated passages from the Famitsu reviews, and it seems like an outlet gave it a 9 in America. All in all I've heard nothing bad. I've heard nothing about Rage.

Links? Or it's all fanboy hearsay.
Also it's already been reported that the main quest alone in Rage is about 15 hours without all of the side quests. I doubt 2 disks for xbox is an 8 hour game.
Lastly, how can the jury still be out on Rage when the game has won tons of best in show awards?

That said, I'll be getting both. Can you tell that I'm looking more forward to Rage though?

Literally ever new bit of news that has come out since announcement has made me more excited than the last. If this gets a 10/10 from multiple major gaming sites/magazines I may just have a heart attack before I get to play it.

Sakuraba is usually horrible (yes he is), but some of the tracks for this game actually sound... good. Unexpected. Have had the limited edition pre-ordered since May, anyway.

Thankfully I only have one console to really worry about. My brother has the PS3, and though i don't see him often we have the same taste in games so I splurge at his place.

Spring for the limited edition? That y'know... is called buying the game for normal price right now? Also I had no idea Sakuraba could do anything other than an amped up elctro-organ with some guitars here and there. Props to him if he really did this whole thing. And Nier's music was fucking eeeepic.

I really loved the calm music in the Nexus. Gave me a feeling of safety from the incredibly hostile outside world. I would actually just leave my game on in the Nexus and have it play in the background while doing other shit.
Too bad that shitty/scary organ music took over in the latter half of the game... =/

I can see myself putting hundreds of hours into this no problem. Easy to do that with Demon's Souls too despite it being smaller and more broken up. I seriously hope my Gamestop is having a midnight launch for this.

We were discussing the length of the single player campaign which is why I omitted the 3rd disk which is solely multiplayer. ;)
Both games should be incredible, still want Rage more though.

I absolutely LOVED the OST for Demon's Souls. I'm excited to hear the next one, but I actually haven't heard anything from Sakuraba at all. Evi Evans is definitely a nice bonus, and I have the limited edition on the way.

Damn, I checked a wiki a few weeks ago which said it was the same composer as demons souls. I don't know what the other guy is like first hand but the Demons souls music was excellent whereas listening to the dark souls sound track I was a bit 'meh' comparing it to what i thought was the same composers music on Demons Souls. The Nexus music was ace, The storm king boss music and Astrea's music.. what I've heard doesn't match it which doesn't neccessarily mean he can't compose as some of you profess to love his other stuff but orchestral stuff doesn't seem to be his forte, I'll remain cautiously optimistic though.
