Demon's Souls featured what was arguably one of the best soundtracks of 2009, and after playing the demo build of Dark Souls at E3 this past June I was pretty certain I was hearing the return of composer Shinsuke Kida with his powerful orchestral score. As it turns out, I was wrong, and a rather big name composer from Japan took over composition duties for Dark Souls and even managed to bring in a familiar vocalist in the process.
The man responsible for the game's soundtrack is Motoi Sakuraba, one of Japan's most prolific game composers known for his progressive rock influences and his soundtracks for the Tales franchise, Mario Sports, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, and many other titles (just check out his VGMdb profile). Based on the samples we linked to a few weeks ago, however, it's interesting to hear how he continues with the same style established by Kida instead of relying on his progressive rock background. His work with a live string ensemble and choir is impressive, and he even brought along NieR vocalist Emi Evans to sing on the ending theme. I can't wait to hear how this all works in the game!
Are you looking forward to Dark Souls next week, and does this news have any sway as to whether or not you'll spring for the limited edition that contains the full 72-minute soundtrack?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'll probably not make my choice until in actually walk into the game store... but seriously, this is the best kind of problem to have. Goddamn good day to be a gamer.
I'm getting both. Something is wrong with me.
I see what you did there.
The composers from CIA are Hiroki Kikuta, Cris Velasco and Inon Zur. Look them up! They’re very famous artists in the field!

Hiroki Kikuta, creator of Koudelka, also composed for Secret of Mana
Cris Velasco from God of War
Inon Zur from Dragon Age and others.
Get Dark Souls. The reviews are in: it's good, and it's long.
Rage - the jury is still out. Additionally, who knows how long the SP will be, and how long the MP will sustain a community (especially on consoles). Now I'm pretty excited too, but Dark Souls is a no-brained IMO; and I grew up with id.
I remember so the world may be mended though. Shit Is engraved in my mind.
I envy you. I wish I could get both two but I'm trying as hard as I can to pace myself over the next couple of months. Lookit...
This Coming Tuesday: Rage and Dark Souls
Two Weeks Later: Arkham City and Ratchet and Clank - All 4 One
One Week Later: House of the Dead Overkill and BF3
One Week Later: Uncharted 3 and Sonic Generations
One Week Later: FUCKING SKYRIM and Saints Row The Third
My head might literally explode in a fine mist of blood and grey matter. What's a gamer to do? Seriously, I ask you. What the fuck is a gamer to do?
All I've seen are the Famitsu numerical scores. Do you have some linkage for any detailed reviews?
This is coming from early reports of outlets getting 80 hours in and loving it, and the hour and a half Gisnt Bomb quick look.
Conrad also seems to be loving it based on his tweets. I've read some translated passages from the Famitsu reviews, and it seems like an outlet gave it a 9 in America. All in all I've heard nothing bad. I've heard nothing about Rage.
Links? Or it's all fanboy hearsay.
Also it's already been reported that the main quest alone in Rage is about 15 hours without all of the side quests. I doubt 2 disks for xbox is an 8 hour game.
Lastly, how can the jury still be out on Rage when the game has won tons of best in show awards?
That said, I'll be getting both. Can you tell that I'm looking more forward to Rage though?
Thankfully I only have one console to really worry about. My brother has the PS3, and though i don't see him often we have the same taste in games so I splurge at his place.
It's three disks :)
And I'm getting it for 360 as well.
This guy made Star Ocean 2 Remix. If you haven't heard that, go. get. it.
I wonder if there's any chance of an arrange album for this one, too.
*imagines a Nier combine with Dark Souls
WOOOOOW
don't it's a shame they didn't use Shunsuke Kida(original composer of Demon's Souls) in the game.
cannot wait for this!!!!!!!!
hurry up amazon!!!!!!!
Too bad that shitty/scary organ music took over in the latter half of the game... =/
We were discussing the length of the single player campaign which is why I omitted the 3rd disk which is solely multiplayer. ;)
Both games should be incredible, still want Rage more though.
