Beyond Good & Evil 2 'on hold' photo

Do you hear that? That's the sound of nerd anguish, my friend.

The announcement of Beyond Good & Evil 2 was something that many gamers had been longing for, and when it finally came it was like a dream come true. Unfortunately, the more time went on, the less Ubisoft seemed willing to talk about it, to the point where one executive even denied the game's confirmation. Now, the inevitable has happened -- Ubisoft has balked on the deal.

Gamersyde's Colin Solal Cardo was the bearer of bad news, Tweeting the grim tidings: "I got confirmation at Cologne's Gamescom that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is on hold for now. No idea if it's def or temporary but it sucks."

Let's face it, we all had that sinking feeling that BG&E2 just might be too good to be true, and now it seems that Ubisoft has truly rained on our parade. With no clue given as to why the game is on hold, we can only guess, and my personal hypothesis is that Ubisoft got cold feet over the original game's less-than-stellar success. The publisher seemed to announce a sequel almost under duress, like its arm was twisted, and has now apparently decided to renege.

Frankly, no announcement at all would be better than a bait-and-switch. Guess we'll just have to sit tight and wait to find out exactly what "on hold" means in this case.

Never played the first, but I can't imagine how much this sucks for people that did. I hope for the sake of the fans that this game gets finished. Ubisoft was actually going to do something for the fans, but ut seems that the thought of money got to them first.

I have no idea why anyone liked the original. The story is badly written and plotted, the characters (aside from Peyj'd (probably not spelled right)) are dull, the gameplay is dull, the environments are dull, and any game that features French Rap is definitely disqualified from being good.

P.S. Dull.

Ubisoft is officially one of my least favorite publishers now. But it wasn't a long fall, they haven't exactly done anything stellar in the last few years.

Sadly, not surprising. Putting "BG&E2" on hold means they can invest more time in the next "Rainbow 6" or "Far Cry"; games that give them the big cash money bucks.

I assume the economy and such had something to do with this... the numbers the original game sold are the same now as they were when it was greenlighted, barring some minor PC download sales, so it was a company decision based on other factors.

People are buying less games right now, so I guess it made sense to them to focus on series that more people purchase and enjoy, like Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell.

I could also be completely wrong and it was a creative decision... maybe a bunch of demos and such were made and nothing felt right, so the project was put on hold.

Ubisoft is a company that hates gamers, but loves people who buy games. You'd think that business model wouldn't work, but it apparently does.

They used to only hate PC gamers (the Rainbows 6: Vegas, anyone? Or the original BG&E on PC for that matter), but it looks like they're spreading it around to consoles now.

From what I understand, Ubi wants Montpellier to finish Rabbids go Home first, then they will allow them to continue development on BG&E 2. Put simply, they want to twist Ancel's arm as far as possible before letting him work on something he has been knighted for.

Well duh: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=boiling_blood

You know, to be honest, I was hoping one of the originals fans would respond and counter my points and explain why the game is good (which I just don't see). I played through it because of Chad's absolutely glowing opinion of it (though in retrospect I should have remembered that Chad has no hate within himself, and thus everything receives a glowing opinion), and was left completely disappointed by nearly every aspect of it.

The only part I actually liked was exploring the world for more of those orbs (I only played the main game so I could get the necessary upgrades/unlocks to get to more exploring).

I guess it sucks for the game's fans that they won't get a sequel, but I just don't see what they see.

Honestly, having owned/played the game when it first came out, I really to this day don't understand the level of fondness people had for this game. By no means was it bad, but it was far from anything epic or even memorable. I never felt an interest to go back and play again to get more unlockables. Frankly, I found the gameplay rather padded.
It was pretty, it had great voice talent, but it was one of the few games In my library I've ever sold back to a used game retailer.
I didn't miss it then, and I certainly don't miss it now.

@ZombieKiller13: exactly.

It seems painfully obvious to me that Ubisoft wouldn't know a good idea if it smacked them in the face with a frozen halibut.

AssCreed sucked. I never finished it because of how much the game bored me. Splinter Cell: Conviction looks cool, but I have no respect for a company that shits out get-rich-quick games for girls and kids so they get bored with my favorite hobby that much faster. BG+E may change minds on that one, but that's only for gamers who happen to know better and don't mind a little actual heart and soul thrown into the mix instead of simple blood and guts/fur and purses.

Anyone who talks shit about this game didn't spend enough time with it. It's like ripping on Okami - you only make yourself look dumber with every harsh word levelled against it.

Just to briefly reply to the people who didn't like BG&E; it's the fault of fans of the game (people like myself) for hyping it out of proportion. It has no space to surprise you. It's not uncommon for people to not like the game after being bombarded by our love for it - the same could be said for most games.

Just don't go into it expecting the best and you'll probably enjoy it.

This truly does suck. I remember watching a friend play this back when I was in college living in a dorm and I just knew that I had to buy it. That's right, I bought it on what I thought of it from just WATCHING someone else play it, and I couldn't have been happier with my decision. While this news is heartbreaking, its not surprising. The original had almost no advertising and hardly any hype, so obviously it didn't sell well. The thing that always boggles my mind is that Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (another Ubisoft game released at the same time) was released in almost the exact same conditions, had lower review scores (though still very good), also didn't sell that well, yet garnered a whole trilogy AND a reboot! The really odd thing is that the ending to PoP didn't really necessitate a sequel whereas BG&E practically begged for it.

I liked Beyond Good & Evil because it was paced well, offered a decent storyline, had a large enough overworld that events felt like they actually affected the game, provided players enough variance to keep them interested in gameplay, and overall just "worked". There were no glaring flaws and plenty of surprisingly nice and detailed touches. Photography, item collection, stealth movement vs direct action, platforming puzzles, fluid combat, vehicles used to explore the enviroment or race for prizes... it all gets blended together seamlessly.

If you went in expecting an average adventure game, you came out seeing something that (although not an evolution of the genre in any way) had been given considerable polish and love from the dev team. If you went in expecting a holy grail, then you probably would be disappointed to find a game that is good across the board but never overwhelmingly great.

Would I trade away my copy? No sir. Beyond Good & Evil was a game that I enjoyed and would happily play again.

What's with these game companies pushing back EVERYTHING? BG&E has to come out at some point, there are too many fans requesting it. This is most likely Ubisoft pushing the game back beyond 2010 just as Blizzard has with Diablo III.

I knew this would happen, and I guarantee you they will eventually just cancel it.

I LOVED the first BG&E. Awesome game and extremely underrated. I want a sequel really, really bad.

But if they make a sequel, I guarantee you that it would sell like crap just like the first game, which is why it will never be released.

As much as I love the game, I wouldn't want to be in the marketing department that had to sell a game about some dike-looking chick with green lipstick and her uncle pig.
