Well, he can destroy your Wii at the very least. That sentence should make you shiver in terror all on its own. Per an announcement made today, the glory that is Super Paper Mario works just fine for US consoles, but attemping play on a PAL or Japanese Wii without the proper upgrades can make you the proud owner of a shiny white brick. Here's the complete skinny:
We just became aware of an issue with Super Paper Mario that has just been released in the USA. It works fine on US consoles. But if you want to play this game on a PAL or Japanese Wii, be it from an original disc or a backup, make sure you upgrade your Wii firmware to the latest available version before inserting the game.
The game contains an NTSC-U Wii update that is not compatible with early European and Japanese Wii firmwares. Failure to upgrade your Wii with the latest firmware before running Super Paper Mario USA on an import system can result in a bricked Wii.
This issue is not specific to CycloWiz, you'll have the same problem with any other region free mods/tricks. It doesn't brick the chip, but the Wii itself, so be very careful!
Yikes, that kind of sucks. On top of sad stories of delayed console releases and massively expensive game pricing, now overseas gamers with mod chips have to run the risk of destroying their consoles in a moment of carelessness. Are just barely better Virtual Console releases all our neighbors have to write home about? On the other hand, I suppose a country that has the Virtual Girlfriend Lap isn't exactly phased by something as ordinary as the occasional busted console.

Nintendo Bricking consoles? What's the world coming to ? ;-)
Or something.
Really, that's just stupid design.
You can't, this is just happening to people who modded their consoles to be region free. The game tries to install the latest version of the Wii firmware, but if you've got a PAL or Japanese system that hasn't already been updated, the NTSC-US update bricks the system.
It's because the trolling has gotten beyond old, and people are sick of it. :)
Why in god's name can't we chip our consoles.. mod our consoles... edit whatever the hell we want with them. We can mod our cars (Just ask any ricer) or PCs or DVD players if we wanted. We've bought the hardware why, legally, can't we do whatever the hell we want with it?
I realize there are a lot of people chipping consoles in order to play burned games or whatever... but turning the OG Xbox into a media center with a chip doesn't seem to be all that detrimental to world society.
I've never actually chipped a console, simply because if I did it wrong I don't have the 400 bucks to replace it with. But everywhere I go I see this really raw sort of disgust with people who mod their consoles, like they've stolen them, or deserve whatever they get the filthy pervs (ie: Orcist's comment at about six in above). Is that reaction really called for or is it something that's just been reinforced by the console makers to keep control over their systems after they've been sold to the consumer?
Again, just a question, curious as to people's thoughts on it.
but why put a NTSC update on a game when you know it's also going to the PAL regions, phe.
I wish they made up their minds and gave a release dat already, I can't Wait to get my hands on it.

There's no evidence that Nintendo purposefully did this in order to brick modded PAL/J consoles (not saying you're implying this...but just heading off any potential counter argument). If, in the future, they do it on purpose... well, that's another topic in which I still think they are ultimately justified to do whatever they wish to do with the software they make... just as we are free to do whatever we wish with the hardware we own.
i think if every business had their way, they would have it so you buy their product but it would still technically belong to them. that way you couldn't do shit to it. i think i remember a court case in either Europe or Australia questioning whether the end user actually "owns" the product they buy in every way. from the company's perspective, they don't wanna waste time solving problems that were caused by the user. i have heard a story about some one sending in a 360 that had obviously been opened and warranty voided because it was painted and had LEDs, but MS still fixed it. i like hearing things like that, but i doubt it happened. if it did, then that's great. the companies just want their product to be played the way it was originally intended to and that is it. if the modding community comes up with something amazing like XBMC, then the company will still try to stop it and will probably just take ideas from the modders for future uses.
now, as for people on the internet looking down upon people with modchips... i just think that stems from jealousy and/or inferiority. so many people (not all, mind you) wanna feel l33t when they're on the internet. when a person who has bought every game they own hears that one dude has a ton of ripped games, imported games, and a custom paint/light mod i think they get jealous sometimes. i have seen so many people make some messed up remarks towards others because of piracy. they put themselves on a pedestal and act all high and mighty, when in reality i bet they would mod their consoles and do the same if they had the know-how or the courage to do it.
I bricked my 360 modding it a couple weeks ago. Because I'm a RETARD!
Always consult the brilliance of the mod community before following a chip manufacturer's guides!
