Bethesda 'working with Microsoft' to remove 'The Pitt' DLC photo

No, it’s not your eyes. Red exclamation marks and rainbow soldiers weren’t intended to be a part of Bethesda’s latest expansion for Fallout 3, ‘The Pitt.’

Bethesda vice president Pete Hines essentially confirmed player reports that the English version of the Xbox 360 DLC is borked. He cited that the file may have been corrupted, which definitely explains all the missing geometry and game-breaking hang-ups. Hines also mentioned that Bethesda is “working with Microsoft” to remove the content for the time being.

“We are continuing to look into the issues people are experiencing with The Pitt for Xbox 360,” wrote Hines on the official Bethesda blog. “As of now it looks like the file for the English version on Xbox Live was somehow corrupted. We are currently working with Microsoft to remove the existing file off of Live to prevent any further downloads. Our plan is to replace it with a new file as soon as possible. We hope to have another update for you shortly.”

An anonymous source told us that the person responsible for corrupting the file receive -200 Karma for the dastardly deed.

It's been a while since we've had such a colossal screw up on live. Im glad I resisted the initial instinct to d/l this. Doesn't Microsoft have some super strict QA before things go Live, or is that only for XBLA titles? Regardless, this has proven to be very interesting, and it should be fun to watch how Bethesda deals with this.

Wow if Microsoft has to pull it, that's a real big fuck up.

Yeah kinda bumer. Got up early and dled it and was stuck in weird rainbows. I thought I had to call ms and fake 3 red lights. Kinda glad it was software. Since I don't want to send my 360 in...again

Good ol Bethesda. Shoddy, glitchy programming as usual.

If it didn't have glitches, it would have been unusual: Fallout 3 had so many.

ZING! Way to use all those millions of exclusive Microsoft dollars wasted on broken DLC, Bethesda. But it is exclusive broken DLC.

You got paid millions of dollars to produce Microsoft exclusive DLC for Fallout 3 and you make The Pitt so broken and buggy that it has to be pulled from the Marketplace? Way to go, Bethesda.

Guys. The file is corrupted. Do you not understand? The missing textures, and rainbow men are not because of bad programming.

PC version is fine - bethesda aren't at fault here, guys. Well, maybe for not checking at the absolute last minute, but even then it could easily by MS's fault.

I really don't like Bethesda anymore. I just completely stopped playing this game after the first "patch". I'll probably wait at least another year for the incredible and dedicated mod community to fix Bethesda's fuck up. The same way they always do. But I think I am prepared to call Fallout 3 worse than Morrowind in terms of bugs, something that I never though I'd say about any game for as long as I lived.

People may bitch about it, but once they fix this, people in the millions would still buy it. One step back 2 steps forwards. Also whatever happened to the Quality Assurance Department? Did they fire everybody in it?

Obviously no one here's ever downloaded a corrupt zip/ISO/rar/DMG file before.

Good to know.

gama, you can't not like bethesda for that - they're huge games, and without the modding structure they provide (spoiler: this is extra to the game), their games wouldn't get better with time, rather than worse, or the same, as is the case with most games :)

@BluDesign

Sure, completely applicable, brah. Oh wait, you forgot the part about how I never had to pay $10 for a corrupted .rar archive. Somebody fucked up along the way to The Pitt's release and it's turning into a colossal debacle. This is just as awful as when the Mission Mode patch for NG2 made it impossible to finish the game.

Then maybe Bethesda should spend a few more months testing their games instead of riding on the backs of their fans to fix the problems they themselves inadvertently created.

notd, come on man, they're huge. the amount of bugs, compared to the sheer quantity of stuff there, is tiny! Plus I never said modders fixed beth's problems - vanilla, their games have always been better than average.

No. No it isn't.

I can and do dislike Bethesda for the way they are doing things. This is not the correct way to develop a game. You don't hurl these bloody abortions out the door and then hope somebody will fix them with your mod kit. In the case of Morrowind, that didn't even happen. All of the most important fixes were done outside of the mod kit. People actually had to optimize Bethesda's code for them to keep the game from crashing so damn much. That's completely ridiculous.

Never had the 360 version crash on me, guess that's another reason not to play PC games :)

To the whiners complaining that it cost 10 bucks, you won't have to pay for it again when they re-release it, shit happens, it was an error or hell maybe it corrupted upon being uploaded, any number of things can go wrong, this isn't the first time something like this has happened, at least they are working on it, just chill and wait.

Good thing I haven't downloaded it yet. When they fix it I will though, and then it will sit on my hard drive until I manage to get through the massive list of games I'm currently playing. Love Fallout 3 though, so I will definitely get it in its non-broken state.

@LukienAkeela

Everyone loved Bethesda. They were making great games, took their time, and when Morrowind was out, everyone and their brother loved it. Then two things happened:

1) Horse Armor (They pioneered sleazy DLC)
2) Screwing PS3 fans out of Fallout 3 content

That's why everyone hates them now.
Chastain86's Avatar
Chastain86 at 03/24/2009 17:26
Oh, for crying out loud. Who are these "everyone" that hates Bethesda? You and a couple of your internet friends?

Seriously, if you're that worked up about it, go outside and get some fresh air. The content isn't broken -- it's the basic equivalent of an e-mail you sent that somehow got corrupted on the way to its receiver. The content itself isn't buggy. The File. Got. Corrupted. This happens from time to time, and it should be easy enough to fix.

It's unfortunate that a bunch of people downloaded the crapped-up version, but they will get the real version and everyone will be happy. Some of you are blaming Bethesda part-and-parcel for this issue, but none among you seem to understand the factors and that go into putting a piece of software up on XBL, and the number of quality checks this had to fail in order to get up there in the first place. This failure is just as much Microsoft's issue as it is Bethesda's.

Some of you are ready to burn Bethesda in effigy, which I don't understand at all. F3 was an awesome game that I have yet to have Problem #1 with on the 360. If you're angry that the exclusive content isn't being offered for the PS3, that's an issue to take up with Sony... not Bethesda. You can bet if the profit margins were there to offer that content to Sony owners, they'd be doing it. Nobody's twirling their evildoer mustache and laughing maniacally about screwing over PS3 owners on this issue.

Sounds like someone loved Fallout 3 enough to overlook it's problems, and you have an Xbox. I don't hate Bethesda, I'll still buy the next Elder Scrolls, I just feel like Bethesda shipped me an unfinished game with Fallout 3, then made some poor decisions to alienate a large amount of their fan-base, then arrogantly boasted about Horse Armor.

It sucks, but a good game is a good game. I still play Morrowind and Oblivion constantly to this day.

This is a pretty big whoopsie, but I don't know if there is really a party to blame here. It sounds like something got jumbled on the way through. I loved Fallout 3 despite some horrifying glitches including one which rolled me back almost an hour and a ton of fighting. I got a good 70 hours out of my first playthrough and have since worked on a second character playing things much differently. Some new glitches come up here and there but with a game that huge there's bound to be a few that pop up.

As for you PS3 players: I do feel bad that the DLC is exclusive but if you really feel like Detox up there then you've got some rage issues going on. Business is business, and that's just the way it is. You give us MGS4 and we'll give you three Fallout 3 DLCs. Fair trade, I say.

@Midgetsnowman Christ, here we go again. Bethesda took an aging franchise -- one, I should point out, that Interplay abandoned then sold because they couldn't figure out what the hell to do with it -- and revitalized it for 2008 and beyond. You can't possibly fault Bethesda for abandoning the three-quarters overhead view. That kind of game won't work on consoles, and it especially won't work with gamers more than 10 years after the original release. But hey, continue to hate on Bethesda if you think it will help.

As to writing the truth, the fact is there are a lot of hipster douchebags on this site that love to build up and idolize games 6 months prior to release, then tear those same titles (and their progenitors) down 6 months following release. It's a sick cycle that's borne from the anonymous nature of the internet. That's not to say that game developers shouldn't be listening to constructive criticisms from the most eloquent among you, but it DOES mean that they shouldn't be listening to every dingleberry with an opinion that visits this website.

I'd never claim Fallout 3 is a perfect game by any stretch, but it kind of gets my ire up when I see people claiming it's filled with bugs, glitches and breaks. (A claim made by one of the writer/editors here, though I'm pleased that I can't remember his name.) That kind of attitude is disingenuous at best and libelous at worst, and all it serves to do is make companies more reticent to put out games that are a little bit different in scope and tone. I'm all for constructive criticisms on games, especially when it comes to improving titles that need it... but attitudes like his aren't designed to be anything more than random blustery nonsense designed to incite message board activity. Believe it or not, you don't have to be a douche to get your point across about a game, and you don't have to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Anyway, that's my $0.02. Your mileage, I'd guess, can and does vary.
