One of the most oft heard complaints from cantankerous Fallout fans is the expectation that Bethesda is shaping Fallout 3 into nothing more than a soulless Oblivion clone. Never mind that these “fans” haven’t even played the game yet, but hey, they obviously know best.
Bethesda vice president Pete Hines has decided to weigh in on the matter; letting gamers know that even if Fallout 3 ends up being an Oblivion clone, it’ll still be better than Oblivion was: hopefully suggesting that the dialogue will be recorded by more than four voice actors.
“I don’t have any doubts that on the whole, and I think this is a belief universally shared on the team that Fallout is a better game, but we’re also not oblivious to the fact that we have a lot of extra baggage that we’re carrying, being the guys picking up this franchise, that are re-imagining this series from 10 years ago, and there’s something that comes along with that. We’re very well aware of what we’re up against.”
“I have no doubts in my mind that, at its core and for everything that it provides that Fallout [3] is a better game than Oblivion was- for sure.”
I assumed Fallout 3 would be better than Oblivion the moment I discovered that it features stuffed animals as lethal ammunition, but maybe that just means I’m easy to please. Still, do you think Fallout 3 will ultimately overshadow the fourth entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, or will it disappoint fans and newcomers alike?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I agree, I happen to think Oblivion is a great game, I can still throw it in and play for hours trying different things out.
suggesting* One infers from another's action/words.
Also, big surprise, Fallout 3 will be good.
Morrowind kicked ass.
But I'm pretty sure Fallout 3 will make my time with Morrowind seem really short :p
Fallout 3 visually looks like someone muddied up all the colors of the rainbow until they got a dull uninspired grey stained into an old dishrag. Also, the game's singleplayer appeared morbidly similar to Command & Conquer: Renegade. For those who don't understand the experience referenced, the game sold for $3 at one point for a reason.
They do, apparently, share similar problems (scaling difficulty, melting face people, etc). So they can share annoying traits.
But hopefully this time around I'll be happily ignorant as far as Fallout 1 and 2 are concerned, and enjoy the game.
It isn't going to feature a massive world with dungeons that use the the same 4 sets of textures over and over?
I could go on but I lost interest when they stopped insiting it wasn't Oblivion with guns and started directly comparing the two games in every interview.
Interesting that they are repeating a lot of the same lies they told about Oblivion before that was released.
I know, I know, I should go register at No Mutants Allowed where all the other angry trolls live, but I don't want an isometric sequel - I just want a TRUE sequel.
I may get Fallout 3 on the PC just in case it's another buggy fucking mess. That way, someone can fix the game at least.
Or maybe I won't. Hell, maybe I won't get the game at all.
Thanks to all this Fallout 3/Oblivion controversy, I started playing again, and now I'm hooked.
Thanks a lot for fueling my addictions, Destructoid ¬¬
Im not doubting this game, but the exact same thing was said about two worlds, and we all know how that turned out.
See what he did there? Huh? Huh?
