Elder Scrolls V is not on Bethesda’s radar. During a Q&A session at Quake Con ’09, Bethesda's Todd Howard told a fan that the studio has “no current plans” for the expected sequel to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
He didn’t add to the statement, but when a clever fan asked about if Bethesda was planning an Elder Scrolls MMO Howard said [jokingly], “There’s always a chance.”
We’ll go out on a limb here and say that the chances of the oft-rumored MMO being real seem pretty good now considering the studio isn’t bothering with a traditional follow-up. Still, this is a gut-puncher. We were looking forward to rolling in another single-player Elder Scrolls title.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But in all seriousness.
BOOO.
Bethesda dropped the ball hard
Teehee, I thought it was called Fallout 3.
Morrowind wasn't really generic fantasy. At least, not in my opinion. Oblivion was, though.
Interestingly in prior ES games Cyrodiil is always described/portrayed as a massive continental Jungle with giant tree cities.
(I'm just a little bit passionate about the ES series.)
Nonetheless, I don't want the next TES game to be another MMO. I've played some for months or years, and I've had enough of that kind of gameplay, completely enough, as in f*ck MMOs.
The Elder Scrolls franchise, and Fallout 3 are great single player experiences, this is what Bethsoft has succeeded at, its why people are fans of the games they develop. I'm sure they know this.
I don't mind if TES5 doesn't come out for a few years yet, so long as it does come out.
About the MMO, couldn't care less.
"Maybe they will deliver an mmo that doesn't suck donkey dick."
LOL
After reading this dreadful speculation I needed a good laugh. Seriously though, Bethesda needs to give their heads a shake if they really think an MMO will be more successful and universally embraced than a proper single player follow-up to TES. Nevermind the reality of the prospect of going up against Blizzard.
Ya right.
Having said that, they announced oblivion like... wellllll into the devcycle, so I'm not taking this as definite.
If they ever did another, I think I'd actually like to see it set before the rest of the series, back in the early ages of the Empire. Fuck, make the hero Tiber goddamn Septim.
I don't really care, just as long as they start bringing back some of the ideas they had in Daggerfall and Morrowind that got tossed out when making Oblivion.
But seriously, this is disheartening. Especially seeing as how the level ramp is critical in MMOs, and if Oblivion and Fallout 3 have shown, they haven't exactly gotten that down pat yet.
I'm actually playing Oblivion again right now. The idea of a bunch of other people running/jumping around, ruining the atmosphere, bothers me.
I'm looking forward to what will happen to the series.
