Bethesda man: Only a few publishers could afford Bungie photo

With Bungie soon able to cast off the shackles of Halo and pursue fresh IP, Bethesda's Ashley Cheng has been talking about the studio's future, and positing that only a very small number of publishers could afford to snap up the house that built Halo. Naturally, Bethesda is one of them.

"I suspect Bungie only owes Microsoft two more games and they're done. Halo ODST and Reach and that's that. No more Halo for Bungie," states Cheng. "You can count on one hand the number of publisher's around who can afford to publish Bungie's next game: EA (via EA Partners), Activision, Ubisoft, Microsoft, and of course, Bethesda. I can only imagine how much it will cost to snag their next title."

Cheng also adds that Sony would be a possible contender as well, but that a Sony-published Bungie game would be "unlikely." It would certainly be quite interesting, and one can only imagine the fanboy fallout that would ensue from such a move. I really think Sony should go for it, as it'd be hilarious.

In the meantime, who wants to stump up some cash so we can buy Bungie's next game?

Sony + Bungie = video game armageddon!

If Microsoft was smart, they would publish and fund Bungie's games in exchange for exclusives and let Bungie have more freedom to make their games instead of rehashing more Halo shooter games.

A Ps3 title?

Won't happen, purely because they would have to hire a ton of new people to work on the system and possibly restructure the studio.

It would certainly be possible and hilarious, but I'd expect that their next title is at least ported to the PS3.

Sony will buy it and it'll be a PS3 exclusive. You heard it here first. Unless Ron Workman already said it.

If Bungie were to make a game that somehow ended up on the PS3, the Microsoft fanboys would be screaming "WORST STUDIO EVAR" before realizing they all own a copy of every Halo game, resulting in massive head asplosion.

Actually, they should do it, eliminate a good chunk of the gaming world's fanboy population in one fell swoop.

Surely one of the terms of their freedom was to never make an exclusive for microsofts competitors. There will be no Sony bungie partnership

Sorry, Jim...for a moment I thought that headline read 'only a few publishers could afford Bungle'. Surely Zippy and George would have something to say about that? :p

But OT, Bethseda man in unsubtle hint non-shocker. Fishing much, mate?

And yeah, Sony releasing a Bungie title for PS3 would be quite possibly the most entertaining thing ever, just simply because every games site in the world would end up with comment threads that read like 4chan on PCP.

I hope sony buys out bungie's next game if only to watch the internet implode then errupt into a hilarious fanboy armageddon.

A PS3 exclusive would be hilarious. Unlikely, though.

You could use a Myth or Oni pic instead of something Halo related. And don't forget, Bungie was a Macintosh developer originally so I think we should expect some epic Halo, Oni, and Myth iPhone puzzle apps each priced at 99 cents.

Halo, no.

Oni, apparently property of Rockstar, so you'd have to ask them.'

Myth, already happened.

Bwahaha, the Mac could have dominated computer gaming if a certain company didn't buy out Bungie. In fact the Xbox and the 360 probably wouldn't exist.

$5 says this new IP is a space based 1st person shooter and it's all about saving the world while wearing a mech suit.

Master Beef shall be his name.

It's time to buy back the rights to Myth and make another of the greatest real-time strategy game ever. Some of the best storytelling in any game ever, too.

While I doubt Sony will I agree it'd be damn funny. I can only imagine the Fanboy Friday segment here if that went down.

@ryu89

I would consider buying a that as they would probably make it a cartoony looking cell shaded Halo with Wii controls. That wouldn't be half bad.

However, most of you are forgetting that Bungie bought their independence from MS, and terms of the agreement most likely had something to do with either, 1. Bungie makes several Halo games tied exclusively to MS, or 2. MS gets exclusive publishing rights before anyone else. It seems to be the former, but why would Bungie develop for a system that's notoriously difficult to program for, when they have never done it, and don't need to? It probably wouldn't end up being cost efficient.

I wouldn't mind a PS3 game as long as it is on the Xbox as well and this is coming from the biggest halo fanboy you will ever meet, however, I find a PS3 game unlikely, they have never done one before and would probably have to hire new people, buy dev-kits etc. But spreading the games to more systems for people to enjoy and Bungie getting more money is ok with me, just means more kick ass games in the future.

It would be EPIC if Sony grabbed Bungie, but then they might turn into the next RARE, which would be morbidly hilarious in itself.

Bethesda publishing Bunge games would be win. I love both companies.

@Chronic Logic: One admittedly great developer would not be enough for the Mac to dominate computer gaming.

Sony publishing a Bungie game would not be in the best of interests for either company, as most of the Bungie fans own an Xbox 360, not a PS3. You'd get Sony fanboys who refuse to buy a Bungie game on principle, and the people who are most likely to want a Bungie game unable to use it, and therefore unlikely to buy it.
