Bethesda buys Fallout IP; Interplay retains rights to brain of Abby Normal photo

Gamasutra has word that Bethesda Softworks, the creators of Oblivion, and the upcoming Fallout 3, have purchased the Fallout IP from Interplay for a sum of 5.75 million dollars. Previously, Bethesda had been licensing the IP from Interplay, but since Interplay has repeatedly screwed the pooch on attempts to recapitalize upon the IP, it's probably for the best that it is taken off of their hands.

Interplay will remain a licensee of the IP so that they can create a Fallout MMO, of which there has been absolutely no work completed so far. Under the terms of the agreement, Interplay plans to start work within the next two years, but considering they've sat on one of the most beloved franchises in the history of PC gaming for almost a decade with only lame spin-offs and horrid console ports to show for it, we're not holding out a lot of hope that they can ever make this MMO thing happen.

Is this good news? Will Bethesda turn the Fallout mythos into an Oblivion-esque, gigantic, free form world where one is free to do as they please, or will they totally botch it, creating a boring, infinitely dull, Oblivion-esque wasteland of good intentions?

I think this is great news. It sounds like they may have had trouble taking the IP the direction that they wanted to. Now that they own it they will be able to do what they want. I really like Bethesda as a development company, both Morrowind and Oblivion are nothing less that spectacular games.

I am really looking forward to whatever they choose to do with the Fallout IP.

Since at this moment I do not have an awesome PC...I really hope that Bethesda make Fallout for the consoles (PS3 and Xbox360) like they did with Obilvion...you know just not as sucky as Interplays console Fallout...wow that was a turd.

@Stetsonblade: That could be one of the reasons they purchased the IP. Might have been a bastard to do the multiple licenses. It would do nothing but help Bethesda anyhow, since Oblivion was so popular. If they did the game right they could bring Fallout back into awesome status.

I hope it's not Oblivion-esque and that Bethesda takes this opportunity to get creative and really bring this franchise back to life.... though I figure I'll be quite disappointed in that regard. As much as I love Fallout, I'm going to hold my expectations back until they get enough decent information about this out.

I also hope that Interplay fails to live up to this MMO license, they haven't done the series justice since the original team got dismantled, and the last thing this series needs right now is another redundant MMO, mostly if its going to further drag this games name into the ground. Hopefully if they do go ahead with this Bethesda will at least be big enough dicks to force Interplay to keep the quality control up and be innovative.

If Bethesda can manage to retain the Fallout humor that we have all come to know and love while providing awesome game play and a polished world I will be one excited Fallout fan-boy.

Fallout 1 and 2 are awesome. This new game probably won't be. I really wish they could just throw some money at the right people/companies and get a large part of the original team back together.

People who don't get the Abby Normal joke really need to catch up on their classic comedy.

Hey! I agree that Brootherhood of Steel didn't live up to the original Fallout, but as far as Console based hack and slashers go..that was a fun little game!
