Beta Test: Global Agenda

Beta Test: Global Agenda photo

Global Agenda is one of those games that have tried to make themselves hard to classify by straddling genres and trying to come up with its own unique identity. Developer Hi-Rez Studios calls its game an "action-based shooter MMO" and I suppose that's as good enough a term as any to describe it.

At its core, however, Global Agenda is a straight third-person multiplayer shooting game. It has elements of the MMO genre, certainly, not to mention a rather significant strategy section, but the heart of the game is in some good old fashioned gunslinging.

I've been trying out the beta for the past few days, and have been tackling the games many high points, as well as its many problems. If you're interested in promising multiplayer shooters for your PC (and who isn't) then check out these first impressions.

Global Agenda takes place in the year 2155. After the Third World War, an oppressive world government called the Commonwealth has taken over, leading to independent rebel factions rising up against them. These factions are called Agencies, and this is where players will find themselves. After a brief tutorial that sets up the game's thin plot, you'll find yourself in one of the game's "Dome Cities," surrounded by other Global Agenda players.

These Domes serve as hub worlds where players can hang out and talk, buy equipment or assign skill points, among other things. For the beta, many of these stores are closed and the ones that are opened have limited items, but the potential to customize one's character are already quite abundant.

There are four classes to choose from -- Robotics, Assault, Recon and Medic. They act pretty much how you'd expect them to, with Robotics being your engineer, Assault being your heavy weapon specialist, Recon being your stealth and disruption unit, and Medic being your healer and buffer. I've gone with the Medic, who can either outfit himself to be a straight-up healer, specialize in poisoning attacks, or dabble in a little of both. Having quickly found out that the Medic is no real good for fighting, I've focused on the healing aspect.

Straight away I've noticed that the characters are fairly unbalanced. The Recon character is totally unmatched right now, and it's no surprise that the vast majority of players in any given match are playing the stealth operative. Hi-Rez is currently tweaking all the classes, but it seems that more than a few power-ups and power-downs will be needed before the game goes gold.

There are a wealth of game options open to the player. PvE will have four players team up to take on the game's AI in order to boost levels and gain access to items which they can use to craft new weaponry and armor. Yes, there will be much grinding needed in this game if you want any of the cool items. I still need about thirty scrap items in order to craft some armor.

PvP will pit two teams against each other in a variety of situations. So far I've gained access to a simple "Capture and Hold" objective and a mission in which one team must escort a big ball behind enemy lines. So far, out of however many games I've played, I think I've managed to be on the winning team twice. I'm not sure how the PvP is set up, because the game isn't very informative, but I always end up on the blue team, and the blue team always loses. I don't know if there is some other faction you can join where all the winners hang out, but the amount of losses I've suffered seem unusually high and feel like there might be some problem underlying the way PvP is set up. This blue team I keep joining has absolutely no chance of winning, it seems, and I really don't want to play PvP anymore until I find out what the problem is.

The game's big main mode is Conquest, but I keep missing out on it. Conquest splits the game world up into territories, and at set times, various Agencies can band together to take over and fight for control of the map. Having joined an Agency, I will endeavor to get into a Conquest game to see what's up with it.

As far as the actual shooting gameplay goes, there is a heck of a lot of potential. Despite the unbalanced nature, the classes are all pretty unique and have access to all sorts of cool, abilities. The controls are loose, but the action is solid, and it's fun to jet-pack around the map and get involved in some pretty intense scraps. Unfortunately, however, all this potential enjoyment is thoroughly ruined by one incredibly game-breaking issue -- melee weapons.

Right now, Global Agenda's battles are a complete mess of people running around hammering the mouse button to hit each other with swords. Like some sort of insane Diablo, players just circle each other, randomly slashing with highly overpowered melee weapons, trusting to luck that the enemy will fall over first. It completely overshadows the shooting aspect of the game and it's absolutely fucking annoying to constantly get slashed apart by a Recon with a Ghost Sword. Again, this is something Hi-Rez is tweaking, but at this rate, melee weapons should be taken out altogether, because they wreck the experience.

With Global Agenda in beta right now and patches issued every day, my hope is that these problems are things that can and hopefully will be fixed. I hope so, because under the wealth of issues lies a potentially addictive experience with a lot going for it. I've managed to have fun with it despite the many irritations, so it clearly must be doing something right. If it can do even more right, then this could be a very excellent little game.

for me its not an MMOshooter unless it has the MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE part for now its just a shooter unless they could get the combat 100vs100 right i consider a MO (multiplayer online) shooter with elements of an MMORPG

Hey Jim, I don't know if you noticed, but there's a second button on your mouse, right next to the one you're probably familiar with. It's called the right-click button, and when you press it with a melee weapon out, you can block melee attacks. If an enemy hits it, THEY take damage, not you. However, if you have the shield out, you're basically vulnerable to anything BUT melee. I don't know what made you think the melee weapons were so OP, but they're really not that bad. Also, in a recent patch, the Recon had its melee damage toned down. It's still the most played class, but it's not nearly as bad.

Also, the reason you always seem to end up on the blue team is because no matter which side you're on, EVERYONE looks like they are on the blue team, and the enemies are on the red team. The reason that you're losing, I don't know. Maybe you're getting matched up against people with higher level-characters than you. While I don't personally find that to be a problem, you can choose to only be matched up with people around your level before you queue up for a mission.

From the classes and description it does sound like it will borrow a lot of Team Fortress 2. Which is good, because that game has very few mechanics that aren't at least solid.

Damn that is a shame, Gandy pointed me in the direction of this game, it looked fairly fun, but I'll maybe give this a miss until it gets balanced, or just give it a miss in total

Am am also in the beta and I have to say I am enjoying it, I was one of the lucky one who got into a decent agency and am now constantly in Conquest.
And about your. I can also tell you a little about the teams. you are allways the blue team and the opposite team is always red. They see you as a red player while they are blue.

Global Agenda was pretty fun at PAX, but I don't really see where the market for such a product is.

Hey Jim, I don't know if you noticed, but there's a button on your mouse, right next to the one you're familiar with. It's called the middle-click button, and when you press it with a zooms in
and then everyone takes damage

Jim your an idiot. Melee is the most underpowered aspect of the game right now. Have you tried to attack on a payload map? It's nearly impossible to leave the spawn as there is always 4 or 5 robotics camping turrets blocking every possible angle.

And as far as the team thing goes, if I remember correctly the blue team is always the team your on, so for your enemies, you would be red and they would be blue. But I mean, go ahead and bash on the game cause you clearly are a god at it.

Everything you've found fault with are the least important "potentially" game-breaking features.

I've played games where I've been outleveled, and I come out with the highest score playing a melee-con. It's not because the class is OP, I just find it the funnest to play. Sniping is retardedly annoying since the scope takes about 1.5 secs to refocus before every shot, and the projectiles move at about 20meters per second.

Sorry for double post but to add about melee: A smart melee-con will use mind games to beat an enemy who also melees, since blocking makes you take barely any damage and instead reflects it to the hitter. So instead of randomly bashing, you could instead spawn a decoy and distract them to hit their back, or switch to the assault rifle when they block, and shoot them. They will either try to charge you and hit you, at which point you either keep your distance or block, or theyll try to shoot you back, at which point you pop biotics and rush them.

Keep in mind most of this post is based on public play and not the actual core of the game which will end up being agency vs agency, 10 vs 10 (or less, hopefully).

For example Recons aren't a problem when you're not doddering around the map by yourself looking for something to do.

Leviticus: I know how melee works, and I still think it's bullshit. It takes away from the whole idea of it being a shooter. Circling other players, mashing swords and shields, is not fun for me.

Kuram: Reign in the being a fucking douchebag and I'll read past your first sentence, thanks.

@Senger

I've managed to get into just about every beta I've wanted to be in over the past years but this one is difficult. It seems like they are keeping the testers within the age demographic the game is aimed at (if you are under 16 or over 30 forget it, you're not getting in unless you are a journo or know someone in the company).

I'm very interested in this game as are my friends. We've been looking for a decent mmo-ish online action game for a while and this one seems to be doing alot of cool things. Nice to know its at least fun, and I'm sure all the imbalances will be worked out eventually.

after playing the beta i stick by my previous post...its just not a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER kinda game small battles small groups sure it has the RPG aspect with the combat but srsly if you include the word MASSIVELY in you game you should get AT LEAST 100vs100 fights crap planetside did 300v300v300

Sorry but I find it very hard to believe that you played the game for more than a couple of hours, never mind a few days. I also have to question the integrity of your opinions, considering so far i've had no trouble mowing down Recons (And any other melee wielder controlled by a button happy player) with my Robotics character long before they get anywhere near and yes, i'm talking about PUG matches.

As for when you're in a group with friends/clan mates, co-ordinating your attack and defence, Recons are little more than a thorn in the side if you know how to deal with them. I also laugh at your responses to people who have a different opinion to your own, the way you cuss and call them out is pretty rediculous, and if not for your avatar i'd actually be convinced you are nothing more than a frustrated pre-pubescent pre-teen.

Jim: I understand. However, something being not fun for you and being overpowered are two completely different things. However, you are perfectly allowed to think something's not fun, that's just opinion.

I was hoping for the game to be more Planetside-esque. (You know, before the implementation of BFR's.... D: ) Then again I've yet to either join an Agency nor been involved in Conquest.
So perhaps that mode will provide the gameplay I seek.

And seriously, what the hell is up with the blue team always losing? I'm -never- on the red (the winning) team.

Being a medic...I can't say I feel vaulable when teamed up with a robotic's class. Geebus, they have epic healz and apparently being a medic makes you especially vunerable to Recon. ....I wish I had a nifty Ghost Sword :o Instead of a neon glow stick, er, knife.

GA is still in Beta atm, I'm pretty sure it will get more balanced. I've played as an Assault and a Robotic up to lvl 18 so far; Assault is ok as long as you team up with a healer, Robotic is pretty rounded as a class, you can defend, heal, assault. Recons tend to die much less than other classes because they can stealth out of trouble, and ninja kills and steal bases etc, but their output got nerfed in one of the recent patches and seem a little less uber than before.
You can now specify you want to game with ppl near your level, but the real point of this game is to get in an Agency, get Vent. going and work some team tactics.
I preordered and got into the beta and I consider it money well spent so far, glitches and all ;-)
