It was 1997 when Toonami first debuted on Cartoon Network. For many, it was the first time being exposed to Anime and to a more grown up style of story telling through animation. Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star, Voltron, and Robotech were just some of the many shows that I came to know and love and I would always find myself watching the entire block Toonami offered, even if they were mostly repeats (looking at you, DBZ). Hearing about the death of Toonami this past week was a real heart breaker and I was surprised by how much the news really affected me. Head on over to Japanator to see some of the old show promos and reminisce about the good old days.

On Destructoid, Jack Thompson finally gets disbarred. On Japanator, check out all of the New York Anime Festival 08 coverage. On Tomopop, the Iron Man Mark I figure looks amazing. And on MiamiNights, gay bars are more fun than straight bars.

Toonami was on life-support for the longest time. As a matter of fact, all cartoons are on life-support this generation.

I honestly preferred the block when it was just one weeaboo show and they would air stuff like Superfriends, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, Thundercats, and Reboot the rest of the time.

It's official, weeaboo is the new "emo", 1.5 years from now it will have no meaning whatsoever.

also, this video is hilarious.

Fuck.

First Billy n Mandy, and now Toonami.

That's just on one network, Arrested Development went bye bye too.

God damnit.....I'm running out of things to watch on TV, House and Fringe and Eureka only come one once a week, on the same day too!

And Cinemax is starting to be boring again.

Sailor Moon is a grown up way of storytelling?

Also, I can frankly care less about the news of Toonami going off the air. In my opinion, Toonami died a long time ago.

Toonami is what first got me into anime. Granted, it had been on the decline for a couple years, but I'm still sad to see it cut. :(

@ randombullseye: I actually meant to mention Moltar as host in my first comment, since that was another plus of the old-school Toonami block. I'm a ridiculously huge Space Ghost: C2C fan. :)

I love Toonami ever since I was a kid. I mean, it helped bring anime in the limelight from the basement nerd scene to the prime time tv. This news came to a shock to me because I didn't know it has been canceled or was being canceled. Yet, with the new changes that had been happening, I knew it wasn't long for this world. I was shocked when they moved it from weekdays to weekends. They always had it on lock. Miguzi never really took its place, yet when that got the ax, I thought they would move it back, but they didn't. If Naruto can't save you, then you are sunk. They never went back and showed the good stuff. They always picked up weird shows or anime people wasn't really interested in. I mean, Prince of Tennis and Bobo bo bobobobo are acquired tastes. I will remember Toonami for the good times we shared and all the contests I tried to entered. RIP Toonami, vaya con dios.

I used to love the shit out of Toonami ever since Moltar was host and up through the golden age with Tom as host and I'm sad to see it go. That was an amazing block of cartoons and content in general (those promos were way above and beyond for TV then and even now), but as it's been mentioned, it's been a shadow of it's former self for years now since the execs keep feeling like they're pulling in the wrong age group (does it matter if the ratings are good?). I'm sure the recent decline in the anime market didn't help it either. Too bad they decided to kill it instead of attempting to bring it back to it's former glory. That would have been a monumental task though.

Like many here, Toonami introduced me to Anime. Dragon Ball Z, Cowboy Bebop(my fave Anime), Tenchi Muyo, Yu Yu, Big O(did you know Big O got a second season because the popular Toonami ratings?), Outlaw Star, Kenshin. And it regularly ran my favorite cartoon ever(American, Japanese, or otherwise) Batman: The Animated Series. They had some AMAZING beats going on with their promos too.

Moltar, pot belly Tom, normal Tom...I stopped watching all these gay face robots and Naruto taking up the block, but I am sad to see it go, because its like a part of my childhood goes with it.

Thank you Toonami, for bringing my so many hours of entertainment.

Wow, watching tom, AKA Steve Blum say "Bang." in the last broadcast the same way he said it in Bebop gives me chills every time. And following the link to the Japanator article and looking at the various intro videos honestly made me tear up a little ;( Seriously, those shows were like an after-school ritual for me and I loved most of them. Plus it opened me up to a new world of cool cartoons.

Goodbye, Toonami. I can definitely say that you left me with a ton of good memories, even if it was time spent in front of the tube.
