There is no real context for why I am posting this video for all of you to see. To be honest, my friend just forwarded it to me and I laughed so hard I felt the need to share.
In the early ‘90s, Nintendo put on a videogame competition called Powerfest. I am sure at least some of you (read: old folks) remember it. While I knew kids that went to the event could compete in various Nintendo games, what I did not know was that they sometimes let attendees make “rap” videos with two guys in Mario and Luigi costumes to promote those super nutritious Nintendo-themed fruit snacks that were sold at the time. Remember those? Like chewing on a pencil eraser!
On the other side of the jump is one of those videos.
I have no idea who the guy in this video is, so please don’t start rumors that it is me. It is not. Although … the video is so rad (seriously, the special effects alone warrant that descriptor) that I actually would be proud if that were me dancing away in those little red shorts. Okay, I changed my mind. That is me in the video. Aren’t I bitchin’?
Hit the jump, watch the (VHS!) video, and be prepared to bask in all its retro glory.
Oh, and you will understand why I put “rap” in quotation marks in just a second. A Tupac video this is not.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
As soon as it ended, I burst into laughter.
Thank you for this.
Anyway, to the video itself, I want to know who thought putting that blue crap that appears somewhat often would make the video look more cool. Maybe it was from how much the VHS tape had aged, and I actually find it more hilarious that way.
I'm curious as to who thought that the little boy really needs to have some really short shorts, and placed between two large men in a costume. As well as who thought the first minute of that video had to include zooming in...on that boy's lower half of his body, bouncing for a full six seconds.
I don't know how they managed to make something so disturbing yet awesome at the same time, but they did it.
Look how half-heartedly the Mario and Luigi puppeteers are dancing. If there was a way to "phone it in" with your soul, that would be it.
Every miserable fuck who comments on "console wars" or "games as art" should be forced to watch this video and remember what it's all about. It doesn't get much better than a kid being happy about a game. Thanks for sharing this, Chad!
BattyAdroit, Luigi has masterfully distilled the entirety of interpretive dance into that one hand motion.
