Best Buy matching new and used prices? photo

Wouldn't that be crazy? Cheap Ass Gamer put up a post today featuring a picture of a sign at a West Jordan, Utah Best Buy. The sign seems to point to price matching of both new and used prices of local competitors, calling out Gamestop and Game Crazy. Crazy!

Says the sign:

Why buy used when you can buy new?

Best Buy now price matches NEW video games at USED prices from Gamestop or Game Crazy.

As Cheapy D reminds, this deal is probably only available in select markets and the promotion likely has restrictions. But still -- wow. If this were a nationally rolled-out effort, Gamestop would have to step it up. Granted, for new games, Gamestop's used prices aren't that discounted.

We're trying to contact someone at Best Buy now. Stay tuned.

That's a pretty ballsy move! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this.

I like that. I'd rather have my money go to the game company instead of gamestop any day.

That'd be one really good campaign. Since I live in probably one of the only areas in the world apart from third world countries where there is neither a best buy nor a gamestop or game crazy, I'm gonna have to pass on this though :-/

IF this launches alongside their trade-in program, Gamestop could see some real competition.

Wow! Sounds like a good way publishers stop bitching about the used games dealio.

I might have to take advantage of this if my local best buy is doing this.

So, do you still want to raise game prices, Mr Kodick? I can see Best Buy and Gamestop just licking their lips already.

@FalconReaper

I was thinking the same thing but then right away I remembered that I lived in Canada and 99% of the time we don't get the cool stuff :(

This is a good deal, no doubt.
However, I buy USED games and don't mind the fact that they are already pre-owned. I buy the game and enjoy it, plus I get my extra 10% off with the EDGE card. I wouldn't throw that 10% away just because my new game may come in shrink wrap.

Any initiative to lower game prices is good in my book. It's fair to the gamers, and its fair to the developers. Large retailers are skimming a lot of money of the top, well above the actual price of a game. Fair deal.

If this is true I am in love with Best Buy.

I will never buy used games because if a game is really worth spending money on then it is good enough that I want to give the developers money for their work, but I'd sure love to buy a new game for a used price!

This is one of those ideas that just make you think - "why didn't someone think of this before?". It's absolutely brilliant, Best Buy could probably swing some sort of deal with the big name publishers to reduce their bulk purchases if it meant they would see more new game sales (and subsequently less Game Stop sales). I'll cross my fingers that this goes nationwide.

For anyone who hasn't looked up further about this themselves, they're market testing in Utah, so presumably it will go nationwide if they find it profitable.

Genuis! They take a small hit, or small discount off their titles and end up with huge amounts of business.

I'm going to my local Best Buy to check this out... next paycheck.

Love the idea. Roll it out nationwide! I encourage any opportunity to not give Gamestop any business. Recently Activision got added to that sentiment with me.

I'd like to see that come this way. But how are you gonna be able to comp the prices, I wonder? I don't deal with GS that much, but do they publish their used trade-in value lists online or something?

@thenooby1: Used, but it may be lacking the original case, cover art, manual, and that's not even factoring in the condition of the disc itself. May not be a big draw for you, but for the number of collectors I've seen on here, I can see them foaming at the mouth. Won't be able to get old/rare games (unless BB also amps up that department), but being able to wait a few weeks and get a mint-condition title for less-than-new price without a sale or coupon? Pretty hard to pass up.

And as stated, several people here hate GS so that's another draw.

Not to mention, sales from BB in this way will go back to the developers and publishers and all.

Or you could just buy online and save a shitload of money in the process. I saw Resident Evil 5 used on Amazon for $33.31 (Shipping included), while it's still $54.99 used at Gamestop. Online is the way to go for these things.

Go to Amazon, find the lowest price for a used game at a retail store, then go to Best Buy, watch them have a heart attack.

It's in Utah only from what we heard. Also it can easily be taken down. Instead of a $5 everything will at least be a $10 difference. Best Buy can't take that much of a hit, not now at least since they are loosing a good amount of money every quarter.

They key here is that it has to be profitable for Best Buy before they roll it out nationwide. If you like this program, it sounds good to me, and your local Best Buy is doing it try to support it if you can. Roll into Gamestop and look at their used games, hell take pictures on your phone if you like, then roll into Best Buy and take advantage of the program and pick yourself up a new copy of the game you wanted instead of the used copy.

I purposely bought MySims new because it had the cover (as well as all the paperwork), and that meant something. (I have poor eyesight, and so need the visual cues that the cover of the games give when quickly picking out titles from the small number I own.)

This is a great idea. I wish street view wasn't stuck in time... I'd love to find out more about this.)
