GameStop has Game Informer, and soon it shall be rivaled by Best Buy and its own gaming rag, @Gamer. Dubbed the "official games magazine of Best Buy", @Gamer is to be helmed by reputed writer Andy Eddy and published by Future US.
@Gamer is due to launch in the last week of June. So far, actual content and style has not been revealed, although I'm sure the combination of late news and sneaky exclusives that allow magazines to compete with the Internet shall appear in full force.
Jokes aside (and I am joking), it's pretty interesting to see Best Buy going toe-to-toe with GameStop like this. It's also further evidence that print isn't "dead" as some people erroneously and ignorantly claim. Magazines are still going pretty strong around the world and carry a certain prestige, so it's certainly not strange to see another mag hit the shelves. That said, I'm very curious to see how well this particular one sells, especially compared to Game Informer.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Anyways, since Best Buy is starting up their own game magazine, are they stocking up other company's game magazines in their Best Buy retail stores or give them the boot?
Not like GI doesn't do the same but the little extras do enough to make it stand out.
Hm? Oh yeah, the news story. That doesn't really interest me since I don't buy magazines anymore. I just go to the internet for my reviews and gaming news.
But yeah, this new mag will most likely suck.
In all seriousness though Magazines are great, but it IS kind of sleazy how sometimes certain companies will leak stories ONLY to certain magazines, and with-hold information from other media outlets with an exclusive deal.
Also, what a terrible fucking name.
I actually subscribe to OXM, because it gives me easy access to demos I otherwise wouldn't download. Besides, another gaming magazine is definitely not a bad thing.
"@ttention g@mer gre@t m@g@zine" would be so much more punchy.
Also GameNow was a far worse name than @Gamer.
Best Buy used to host Animeago (or something), an anime mini-mag. The thing was, it was free. If this isn't free then it better be *good* or offer some insight the rest simply do not offer.
By the way, when is Destructoid coming out with a mag? :3 I'd read it!
