Best Buy launching official game magazine photo

GameStop has Game Informer, and soon it shall be rivaled by Best Buy and its own gaming rag, @Gamer. Dubbed the "official games magazine of Best Buy", @Gamer is to be helmed by reputed writer Andy Eddy and published by Future US.

@Gamer is due to launch in the last week of June. So far, actual content and style has not been revealed, although I'm sure the combination of late news and sneaky exclusives that allow magazines to compete with the Internet shall appear in full force.

Jokes aside (and I am joking), it's pretty interesting to see Best Buy going toe-to-toe with GameStop like this. It's also further evidence that print isn't "dead" as some people erroneously and ignorantly claim. Magazines are still going pretty strong around the world and carry a certain prestige, so it's certainly not strange to see another mag hit the shelves. That said, I'm very curious to see how well this particular one sells, especially compared to Game Informer.

I stopped buying physical game magazines a long time ago since they're just so expensive.

Anyways, since Best Buy is starting up their own game magazine, are they stocking up other company's game magazines in their Best Buy retail stores or give them the boot?

Websites are so much faster, cheaper and more comprehensive than magazines can ever be.

Got the new issue of GameInformer yesterday. I didn't realize it was put out by GameStop, I assumed they just had a deal with another company to sell subscriptions. Pretty cool rag though. Curious to see what Best Buy will put in a magazine. Anyone else notice they barely put any games in their ads as of late?

Will they charge five bucks more for it like with half their merchandise?

Thing is the only reason GI stays in the game is because they have great features and maybe more importantly the exclusives. They've kind of had that monopoly for a while. I doubt @Gamer (awful name) can challenge that and become anything more than a long winded collection of advertisements.

Not like GI doesn't do the same but the little extras do enough to make it stand out.

I want a Destructoid magazine with a fold out cock with the timeline of gaming history.

How trustworthy is a magazin made by a company that sells games?

Meh. This doesn't really interest me. Game Informer is fine and the only reason I get that is because of my Edge card. If it wasn't for that then I'd just read my gaming news online. Also, have to second the awfulness of that name.

Haha, sorry, I'm laughing at the header image, hehe...

Hm? Oh yeah, the news story. That doesn't really interest me since I don't buy magazines anymore. I just go to the internet for my reviews and gaming news.

I keep a subscription to Play Magazine, Game Informer, and OXM. I used to love getting issues of EGM, PSM and the Official Playstation Magazine when I was a kid, I guess I just never lost that feeling. The Internet is great for day-to-day news, but sometimes I just like to sit down with something tangible in my hands and read.

But yeah, this new mag will most likely suck.

Ah Jim you're getting soft with that joke disclaimer!

In all seriousness though Magazines are great, but it IS kind of sleazy how sometimes certain companies will leak stories ONLY to certain magazines, and with-hold information from other media outlets with an exclusive deal.

So I don't know if anyone else knows this, but EGM is back. I used to read it back in the day, but have since switched to GI. I remeber it being more stuff less fluff than GI, but that could be just fond memories. Anyone picked up the new issue?

That's the dumbest name I've ever heard.

I actually subscribe to OXM, because it gives me easy access to demos I otherwise wouldn't download. Besides, another gaming magazine is definitely not a bad thing.

Is Best Buy going to start selling VCR's and 8tracks again too?

I have received decent customer service exactly 6.8% of the times I've been to Best Buy. Once my ignorant ass spent an unnecessary extra $100 at the suggestion of the salesperson because I was an uneducated moron. I was grateful for that form of education whe. I found out about it later and continued to think of Best Buy fondly for the rest of my days.

In 2010, cool brand names definitely need more @'s!

"@ttention g@mer gre@t m@g@zine" would be so much more punchy.

Does anyone really read game magazines anymore. Last time I got a GI was 2 years ago and only because I got an Edge card.

Also GameNow was a far worse name than @Gamer.

Is this supposed to tie-in with Twitter?

Best Buy used to host Animeago (or something), an anime mini-mag. The thing was, it was free. If this isn't free then it better be *good* or offer some insight the rest simply do not offer.

By the way, when is Destructoid coming out with a mag? :3 I'd read it!
