The Final Fantasy VII PlayStation 3 revision was the best-kept secret in the videogames industry, until Best Buy let the cat out of the bag. Recently, a Best Buy employee sent a photo to PSU showing an in-store advertisement for Final Fantasy VII and its August 16 release date. Square Enix tried to hit the panic button and silence us, but we considered the reader our top priority on this important find.
The real question for consumers come the 16th is if they will have the cash needed to buy Final Fantasy VII after purchasing Hannah Montana: Spotlight next Tuesday. For most, it will be a tough decision. Unfortunately, I believe I will have to pass on peering into the Highwind home and watching as the fateful tea scene unfolds again.
In all reality, this looks to be either a great Photoshop, or a sign that major retailers will always find a way to try to crush our spirits. Of course, like most fans, I’m always excited whenever FFVII gets a mention. Even though Best Buy is terribly wrong, we still have that XBLA and PSN remake rumor to chew on while we continue to wait.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
That's absolutely unheard of!
Seriously, that's either a good shop or Best Buy loves crushing my dreams.
Nice pun there, nice.
AND, if it's not a remake with vamped graphics...etc DO NOT WANT.
Advent Children isn't coming out on Bluray until March if I'm not mistaken.
but when is the European release date?
So Photoshop or Fake is out.
It's not the Blu Ray, as that is slated to be released in March 2009 with the FFXIII Demo and a few trailers.
I'm guessing it's someones bad joke, a mistake or some closely guarded secret.. In that order. The latter being so ridiculously unlikely that i'd be willing to risk my own testicles for it.. But I can't. They complete me.
I filed "Final Fantasy VII being announced for PSN download in its original format" under mistake. As the store has wind of its announcement, but was dumb enough to not realize that they can't sell it. These things have happened before.
The only issue with most theories is the date.
It lands on a Saturday. PSN launches are on Thursday. Most release dates are during the week.
Some people suggested that they meant to type in Disgaea, but that game is on the 26th, not the 16th. It's a practical impossibility for someone to accidentally screw up both the title, numerical format AND date.
But the thing that keeps bothering is me is why they'd have kept it secret...
It seems like SquareEnix would have announced an FF7 remake before Best Buy...
lawl.
@EightBitMav: I can't take credit for those words. I was moreso mocking it. Yes it is a possibility that it is the regular version of Advent Children.
But I honestly feel that it is not. The only version of Advent Children that has been announced for HD format was "Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete". They announced that back in 2007, then it was delayed to 08, and now it is delayed to March of 2009. Why would they continuously speak about its release, and then undermine the entire project by releasing the Blu Ray as it is, unannounced and on a Sunday?
Advent Children Complete is supposed to be a directors cut, and contains trailers for the upcoming games, as well as a demo of Final Fantasy XIII.
I texted one of my friends/ex-co-worker at BBY and he had no clue what it was about. Mentok alluded to the fact that he works at BBY because of the Water Cooler mention.

That was supposedly taken by the same person. Aside from that, Mike Fahey from Kotaku says that he's gotten multiple e-mails since they put the story of people sending him pictures of their own Best Buy stores with the same board.
There was also additional claim of a linked new PS3 SKU with the release posted by Mentok up above.
