Best Buy dropping the 80GB PS3? photo

Sony has been putting a lot of focus on it's 40GB PS3 model lately, discontinuing the 20 and 60 GB models in Japan within the last couple weeks and thus sparking the fear among Western gamers that a similar move will soon be made in the states.  It appears our fears may be realized sooner than we thought.

A scan of an internal document, supposedly made by a Best Buy employee, surfaced today stating that Best Buy will no longer be carrying the 80GB version of the PS3 as of January 28th, and assumes that 60GB models will be cleared from the store by that time as well.  Leaving only the crippled 40GB model to be sold in stores.

Far be it from me to jump headlong into the thick wilderness of rumorland, I decided to see what confirmation I could get for myself.  A brief call to one of my local Best Buy's confirmed my suspicions.  A sales rep (who probably realized his mistake about two seconds too late) informed me Best Buy will no longer be receiving 80GB PS3 models and will not be taking any reservations for the stock they currently have.   The salesperson did not however, confirm a specific date at which they would cease carrying 80GB models.

Remember that 40GB models of the PS3 have only two usb ports, no memory card readers, and most importantly no backwards compatibility.  So while this rumor is only half confirmed for the time being, anyone holding out on picking up a PS3 that also has a feature considered a standard by most, would be advised to go pick one up, soon.

I'd have to believe this is Best Buy's decision, and not Sony's. Sony has, after all, had a history of trying to push premium versions of the same product, and not just on the PS3. Maybe the store is just not making as much money on the 80GB model due to lower sales. Maybe a 160GB model is coming. Maybe 80GB sales have tanked because people expect to get BC for the extra $100, and if it isn't there, they get the 40GB model.

If Sony is planning on canning the 80GB model without replacing it, well... that would be phenomenally stupid. Grab some popcorn.

Honestly,guys/gals, is the this really shocking? sony has stated that already they are doing thigs like this in order to make it easier FOR THE AVERAGE COMSUMER, y'know, joe fucking stupid public, plus why all the anger at the backwards compatabilty being cut out. Fuck sake were gamers for cryin out LOUD!!!!! most of us already have a ps2, and, lets face it, none of us really dedicate much of our lives to it anymore. Sure maybe an hour or two there, but seriously, we've all moved on.and if ya aint got one, then there dirt cheap these days, thats a for sure. However the biggest gripe i got is that its only BestBuy sating this, when it starts speading to other major stores,THEN get angry, if you must, until then, take a chill pill people, please? the reason that i getting the 40 gig version, is the price and wifi, the reason a lot of other new ps3 owners are getting one, people(READ: public) arent bothered with BC any more, the ps2 had its day in the sun, time for the future, baby

Brutal. I was lucky and found a brand new 60gb at my local Blockbuster of all places. B/C is really important to me at least. I've gone out and bought like 6 PS2 games, and only 2 PS3 games, and I've had the best PS1 sitting around in my closet waiting till I got a Playstation system again; Thrasher! People wanting to get a cheap PS3 would go for the 40gb, but I think that having one system to play 3 systems games is a really good idea. All the ports though are somewhat unnecessary. Plus upscaled PS 1/2 games is nice as hell.

@TheExit, vey valid points however, like i said, all that doesnt matter these days, people who buy the 40gig do so because of the price, the fact its a new console,The pubic want new things, ALL the time unfortunatly, its media features, and of course the bluray(or bluRAPE) player, me, being a long time gamer, got one due to the above reasons, plus i really wanted to 'upgrade' to the current generation after my 6 year old ps2 started to bore me.

@Psywolf, Dude I totally agree, its the most fucked up thing ever since the rapping granny on Americas Got Talent, I hate the fuckin word as well, stupid indeed

News flash to anyone who hasn't bought a PS3 yet -- The backwards compatibility looks terrible on every single PS2 game i've played on my PS3. For me, there has been a huge noticable difference between one game played on a PS2 using component cables, and the same game played on the PS3 using component or HDMI. The PS3 version looked terrible every time.

If you wanted backwards compatibility with the PS3, they really didn't deliver in the first place. despite the fact that the games will play, you possibly won't want to play them.

I've never played games like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, so I really need BC in my ps3 whenever I get around to buying one.

Who gives a fook about this news, only hardcore gamers and teenagers will buy a PS3, so if they want BC they will get one off ebay. No normal person would buy a PS3 anyway, hasnt got the appeal of the PS2 when DVD was new and such a jump from VHS.
As we have all said its about the gmaes, games sell consoles unless theres a new tech thats so great everyone wants it!!!!! i.e. DVD with the PS2
Sony fans will buy the PS3 becasue its a sony i.e lack of sales, pepople who want to play games and havent got a ton of cash will buy a wii or arcade xbox. It all shown in the sales!

What the fuck Sony? Seriously, i finally start thinking about getting one soon and i find out i'll only be able to get a crippled POS that i don't want. Why the hell would i even bother? Please give me an excuse to get a PS3 that doesn't involve a lower price based solely on the fact that half of the features are missing.

Maybe I'm the only one who had their PS2 die on them a few years ago. I was looking forward to picking up a PS3 the next time they dropped the price ($300 ftw). One of those reasons was I could use the PS3 to catch up on all the now cheap PS2 games I missed... I've got all the HD I need on my PC.

Guess I'll just buy a PS2 instead, it is a lot cheaper with more games...

Why would they do that? Is it that people aren't buying the 80GB version or something? And I thought that they discontinued the 60GB version a long time ago.

seriously bc is pointless because if u buy a ps3 youll most likely play ps3 games. lets think about it ppl did u play much ps1 games on the ps2 when it came out, i didnt. if everyone does want to play ps2 games just get the slimm remake of the ps2 thatll solve ur problem. to me 40gb ps3 aint that bad, a real money saver too. juss my opinion.

Since the 40Gb does not have BWC, it should cost a friendly wonderful $199, BWC is extremely important. But does anyone know why they did away with it besides cost cut. Another reason may be the problems they were facing with old games not looking good through the HDMI. They should consider trying to solve that problem, because seeing ps1 ps2 games in there full 480p is also a delight for people that wish to play the oldies.
