Best Buy Canada gets into the used games market photo

Best Buy Canada, recognizing the obscene profits to be made by reselling used games, has decided to adopt the practice at its subsidiary Future Shop stores. The Globe and Mail goes on to tell us what we're already intimately familiar with, that the markup on used games is enough to give any retailer an immediate, throbbing, dew-tipped erection.

In spite of the fact that we all know we're being robbed at smile-point every time we sell a used game to a brick-and-mortar store -- not to mention the better options readily available -- a large number of gamers continue to allow themselves to be taken advantage of. Best Buy is simply making a wise business decision, and to be perfectly honest, I can't blame them for it.

But what's the solution here? If a game itself is so unimportant to a person that they'd happily trade it for fractions of a penny on the dollar at the first opportunity, it seems reasonable that the same person doesn't care about things like box art or packaging. I submit that for these people, who go through video games like toilet paper, a version of a game lacking box art and special packaging (and thus subsidized, resulting in a cheaper purchase price) would be perfectly acceptable. Let's get cracking.

[Thanks, Jonathan!]

Remo
it'd be great if someone could do a feature about the other options you mention.

Ebay, Goozex and Amazon Marketplace. There.

I don't trade in games or get rid of them at all. Only a game that is so mind bogglingly awful (hello Puzzle Quest) will leave my collection and then it'll usually only be to hide the fact that I bought it in the first place.

At the same time it's also worth noting that time and convenience are worth money, too. Sometimes trading a game into a store for relatively lower value is less of a hassle than putting up with questions from people whining about your low overall feedback on eBay or Amazon Marketplace needing your account info. But yes, using trading system gets you less money overall, but if you've a store 15 minutes away and are already going in to pick up something you've preordered, may as well make it a single trip to get rid of some unwanted titles.

It's nice to know that some folks NEVER attempt to cull their collections, though. We can buy their games off of eBay when they DO decide they don't have space anymore.

I don't understand why so many are so harsh against those who would sell their games. Every game has a different value to us. There have been a ton of games that I played through and enjoyed, but never saw myself as playing again. So, why should I not try to at least get *something* from it instead of give it away or let it collect dust on a shelf? Some people don't like or use eBay or don't consider it to be worth their time. So, for those people getting $5 from a used video game store is better than $0 to let the game sit unused.

This is really interesting to me, as at least in my part of the country, EB Games has a near monopoly on used games sales. I know it's a major part of their business model and where they earn most of their money, so it'll be interesting to see a little competition on the block.

Best Buy has also very recently announced getting into malls with Best Buy Mobile stores. Their focus is supposed to be mainly cell phones, but if they carried new and used games as well, they'd be hitting EB Games right in their home territory.
