Beowulf screenshots make my inner bookworm squirm with delight photo

In the days before videogame journalism owned my soul, I could often be found in used bookstores perusing shelf after shelf of aging tomes, looking for that lit nerd's holy grail so often hidden there. Although the harsh reality of teaching salaries has come to crush the dream that I might one day talk about books for a living, I have to say I get a special twitch when I see classic literature worked into the modern world in creative ways. Enter Beowulf, Ubisoft's foray into the "reinvention" of the hack-and-slash genre. Big talk, Ubi!

At any rate, some new screenies are out and they look yummy. The game follows Beowulf through his travels and supposedly will include twenty years of his tale not included in the upcoming film. I can't help but wonder: Since the conclusion of the epic poem results in Beowulf's death, how will Ubi handle that conclusion in game form? Games have gotten more experimental in the last decade, but it's not exactly fulfilling to spend thirty plus hours with a character only to see him bite it in the end. It comes out in October for 360, PS3, PSP and PC, so I suppose we'll know soon enough.

I recently found a great rare hardback edition of Beowulf with some engravings done in Gustav Dore style. Needless to say, I felt just about as happy as I would have if it had been the Nintendo World Championships Gold cart.

This should be of epic proportion. I haven't heard a word about this game though until that link in this post, is this multiplatform?

Anecdote to show this is relevant to my interests: back when I played D2, all my characters took their names from Beowulf: Hrunting, Wiglaf, Grundel (heh).

So, gimme the game based on one of my favorite epics, ever, already.

And Collette, for Beowulf's death, couldn't Ubi let Beowulf die right after the battle with The Dragon? IIRC, he dies from wounds sustained in the battle. Sorry for the spoiler, I figure you've all had well over a millenium to read it.

This is fucking awesome. I can't wait for the movie or the game. God, November is going to be a fucking busy month for me.

As far as fulfillment goes, it would be retarded un-fulfilling (for me at least) for Ubi to break away from one of the finest literary epics in history. If Beowulf ain't dead at the end of it all, I'm gonna lose a tiny bit of my mind.

@Papapishu: If you press Quarter-circle forward + Y, will a Scandinavian tear off your arm and send you crying home to your mom?

@Pangloss: Only in the Japanese release. Although I hear that if you press Back, Forward, Punch at the right time, you get to yell at Queen's Vagina.

Also, some guy on the internet told me that if you collect enough 1/35 Soldiers, you get the ending where you live.

Correction: "THE" Queen's vagina. Contrary to popular belief, tha band Queen included no lady parts.

Man, why can't a character die in the end of a video game? Seriously, has it been done? If so, rad, if not, rad. This game is going to be Epic.

They're making the game based on the 20 years between the Grendel and the Dragon? That's a fuckton of artistic liberty.

@Roryzilla,

Peter Jackson's King Kong?
Chrono Trigger? (Kinda)
And another niche game RPG that ends in the number 2.

I so want to go kill Grendel's mother. I wonder how that scene would play out in the game? The whole going in a lake while battling monsters without drowning thing.
