Believe it or not, work continues on Wii Vitality Sensor photo

When I didn't hear anything about the Wii Vitality Sensor this year at E3, I guessed that Nintendo was hoping we'd just kind of forget about it. Maybe they still are. But someone asked, so they had to talk.

Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway told Game Set Watch that Nintendo is "continuing to work on the Vitality Sensor." They would have talked about it (yeah, right), but they had too much other stuff to show off, they say. Like a little finger sensor would have stolen the limelight away from the 3DS and a new Zelda game.

"We decided we'd think about other venues that would be more appropriate," Cammie said. "[E3] is noisy and adrenaline-filled, and loud and stressful, and it just didn't seem like the best environment to introduce a product that's really about relaxing."

Nice one! 10/10 for quick and crafty spin.

What? You didn't see that godawful breathing game by Ubisoft? You know, the one that made gamers want to slit their wrists in embarassment?

"E3 is noisy and adrenalin filled"

Yes Cammie. Yes it is. One would do well to be mindful of that Dunnaway.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. E3 really is not the place to show off a relaxing, breathing game. I'm sure that it'll resonate with yoga moms and plenty of other people, but not so much with hardcore games press.

I guess if Nintendo wants to continue to waste time on something so stupid, that is there decision to do so. Why anyone would continue working on such a useless product, is beyond me. Wasting time, money and man power on something no one will buy or use. If you're at a point where you need a vitality Sensor, then go to the doctor.

See, if they revealed news about the Vitality Sensor right after the 3DS, there would've been such severe whiplash that everyone would walk away with broken necks or severed heads.

The only cool use of this that I can think of is to use it in a horror game. For example in Dead Space 2, Isaac is supposed to have post traumatic stress disorder. The vitality sensor could be used to measure the stress level in the player, and then tie that data to an in game mechanic. So the more stressed out you are, the harder it is to aim, or the higher the stress level, the more the protagonist hallucinates.

There HAS to be a penis accessory for a game out there. I mean....WHAT'S THE POINT IF THERE ISNT?

I've got a better vitality sensor: First you play the Wii, then if you get bored, you're still alive. If you're entertained by the Wii, you're legally brain dead.

I think this product is more about video games and technology bringing a positive influence to a person's life. It's strange that there is all this negativity towards this product. I mean, is that too much of a craaazy idea? That video games can have a positive influnce? That's utterly insane.

I think this kind of device is at least part of the future of gaming. Imagine this kind of tech built into a standard controller, causing games to dynamically shift in difficulty or tone based on your stress levels.

For example, imagine a game like Eternal Darkness, with your stress levels tied to insanity effects. To prevent some of the more gnarly insanity effects, you'd have to consciously keep calm (just like a real person would, under the circumstances), even while being attacked by creepy zombie-ish things.

You haters lack imagination.

I love Nintendo, but what the fuck is this really? I'm probably one of the few people who would say they've had some fun with Wii Fit, but this is going too far.

I'd like to think they actually WERE going to talk about the Vitality Sensor, but they saw Ubisoft's presser the day before and saw their version of the Vitality crap, Innergy, crash and burn, and thought better of it.

If history has taught us anything it's never doubt Nintendo. I won't even feign interest until I've seen the final product.

Wait, really? after nothing of it was mentioned on the E3 i even started thinking it was either a discarded project or just a big red herring to keep people, MS and Sony distracted while Nintendo gave the finishing touches to the 3DS for E3 2010, i'm quite surprised its actually not dead.

@Comrade Snarky - yes, let's make games less fun. Hey, for real immersion, we can pay for a controller that punches and stabs us when it happens to our character! Awesome!

I am quite excited of how this could come out to be honest. I always wanted games to be a little more attached on how you feel.

It'd be more exciting if they could use the Vitality Sensor to shock you wne you did something stupid in a game.

A wrist or chest monitor would have been more practical. The current sensor prevents use of the nunchuck attachment. It's going to be pretty gimmicky as is.

I just spent the night in the hospital with my finger in one of those goddamned things. If Nintendo can somehow make that fun, they deserve a Nobel prize.
