Behold the face of idiocy: Swedish gamers already camping for GTA IV [Updated] photo

I guess a few Swedish gamers didn't get the memo that you can actually pre-order games in this dazzling 21st century. The above image is one of several insane Swedes who are actually camping outside a store for Grand Theft Auto IV -- damn near two and a half weeks before it even arrives. In comparison I could head into town and most likely pick up two copies on launch day.

Maybe there's some videogame shortage I didn't hear about in Sweden, but this borders on the slightly braindamaged as far as I am concerned. I don't know what's sadder, that these people feel the need to spend over two weeks outside for a videogame, or that they have so little going on in their lives that two weeks are simply that disposable.

I guess this is what hype does to the human psyche. I can understand camping out a few days for a launch console -- barely -- but over two weeks for a continually pressed disc? That, my friends, is ridiculous. You can see more pictures of the insanity at the source -- a Swedish retailer that has captured these crazy people on camera.

Oh well. They're happy ... I guess. They really shouldn't be, though.

[Update: Apparently the first ten Swedes to buy GTA IV win prizes like consoles and things, which is why they have taken half a month out of living to camp there. Whatever. I still think it's pretty stupid and have filed it under the "win at contest, lose at life" category. Seriously, how can you take two and half weeks out of life for a console? Maybe there just isn't much to do in Sweden]

Heh, yeah, if I camped for two weeks for something, I'd better be getting a lot more than ten games for a dollar. I'd have to be getting a new job and apartment and twelve hot babe beedge slaves.

Whatever, I still want to go to Sweden.

Yep.

This ain't idiocy.

http://www.webhallen.com/list_group.php?avd=1&group=905

The first ten (in either group, which makes it 20) get the PS3 and X360 bundles for free for doing this. (console, and game) and the first 30 get the Limited Edition copies of the game for free.

Your article kinda sucks now because it's misinformed and sensationalist, without going into any kind of facts behind the waiting. And since the PS3 GTA bundle here in Sweden at its cheapest is $750 or so, you can sort of see the point.

They're not sitting in line for the GAME, they're sitting in line for $750

That's not really all that stupid.

Research moar.

Can you really understand camping out a few days for a launch console? Personally I can only understand camping out when on a trip and without a house or similar accomodation available.

@ xenon

Yes, I can understand camping outside for $750.

If I had 3 or 4 friends who would be willing to do it with me, and I lived in Stockholm, yeah, I could see myself doing it as well.

I fuck around most of the days at my home, no reason why I couldn't fuck around in front of a store and get my ass paid for it. Any work I'd have to do I could just as easily do on my laptop from there.

Personally I'd take two weeks worth of wages over camping in front of a game store. I could buy both consoles and a copy of GTA IV for each. Then again, if you have a shitty job and no bills/life, why not?

@ mxyzptlk

I'll take option c) get two weeks worth of wages AND camp out in front of the store for the console/game, then take the $750 I'd spend on the console/game and spend it on booze and girls at a nightclub.

Enjoy the toiling in the salt mines or however it is you get paid. It's because our lives are so good here on average, that we can masturbate in front of a store all we want.

Now I'm not saying it's not stupid to sit in front of a store for X reason, but it's not as stupid as the article makes it look like, due to lack of translated information on the subject, and a slew of other details.

The rest is just an assumption regarding their lives, and we all know how much those are worth.

I mean, just take the source. The source of the article sits on his ass at home or wherever finding/writing this stuff X days a week and then using the rest of the time writing other things that are going to win him that ever elusive Pulitzer, intense dissertations on why Princess Peach is always in another castle. Is that really any better if it's being done from the house or from the street.

See what I did there? I made an ASSUMPTION. Anyone can be made to look like a loser.

At any rate. Weaksauce.

Ok, I know we Norwegians usually make jokes about the intelligence of the Swedes (though I know deep down that we Norwegians are probably dumber), but I'm going to defend these fools a little.

6 million copies of the game will be shipped worldwide at launch, and in Norway alone -- a country of near 5 million inhabitants -- there are 100.000 pre-orders for the game. And those numbers came 20 days ago! Just imagine what those numbers are today! And Sweden is near identical to Norway, only they are twice as big! So the demand is probably double there. I pre-ordered the game a month ago, and I'm actually wondering wether or not I'll actually get the game at launch.

I'm not attacking you Jim, I'm merely just reacting to your statements where you claimed that we could probably just walk in to a store on launch day and get a copy. That might be true to you Brits, but not the smaller countries in Europe.

But yes, they're still fools! Free PS3/360 bundle or not, instead of freezing my balls off for 20 days, I would rather make sure I get 20 days of valuable education in school prior the exams! And then I could spend an hour after school working for money to buy that GTAIV bundle. Then I would just wait untill there are enough units in store, because it probably wouldnt be that long until a new shipment arrives.

Peace!

Now what's with this sensationalism? Almost reminds me of the times Summa was let out of his cage to practise "journalism" around here.

Anyways... Spending two weeks on the street just to get a bunch of games for a special price? Pointless.
Creating a blatant circlejerking stereotype-spewing article about the few people spending two weeks on the street to get their hands on the game deal? Also pointless.

My two cents.

It better be a PS3, because there's no way in hell that I can even halfway rationalize standing outside for something that you know is going to die on you.

I thought people only did this stuff for Star Wars premieres.

I don't care what special deals they're getting, there are no words for me to describe the level of sheer idiocy that these people are achieving. They're going to sit outside in front of a store for two weeks straight? First of all, you're an asshole for using your patheticness to deprive normal, sane people of the chance to get this deal. And second, get a life.

Lining up can be fun. Granted, it makes a little more sense for a Star Wars movie or something equally as epic. There's a little "history" there.

I've never done it like that. Best I've done is showed up early for the nerd-right to say I was third in line to see Episode 3 a week early.

But they're getting a prize on top of getting first in line? Sounds alright to me. Silly, but not stupid. If your fanboyism is worth blowing your vacation time/skipping two weeks of classes, more power to ya :D

@ BlackDove: Wait, how are they supposed to go to work and also camp in front of the store? Can they bi-locate? Are they desperate enough to waste their vacation time on this? Or are they basement dwellers who have a job so shitty that this stunt makes financial sense to them?

Regardless, wasting two weeks of one's time in front of a store just to get a game console for cheap is pathetic in my eyes. Granted this is coming from someone who actually has a life, believe it or not. If you think they're totally rad to the max for spending their time this way, congrats on your opinion. Personally, I wouldn't consider having nothing better to do than "masturbate in front of a store all we want" to win a prize something to boast about in regards to your homeland. Better leave that off the tourism brochure.

Even the update has errors in it. It´s 20 people, not 10.

Obviously the whole article was flawed, making any judgement about those in line wrong.

A gamesystem+GTA4 for about 10 cents is not that bad, especially when you only have allowance.

They´re probably still in school, and people who camp outside stores for gta doesn't seem like the kind of people who cares about school. I stood in line over the night for the wii release and it was quite fun, playing some ds and meeting new people (yes, the wii sucks, how was I supposed to know). But still, fucking idiots.

The thing is that the first 10 people will just have to pay 1 swedish crown thats 1 SEK is 0,10 EUR or/and 1,00 SEK is 0,16 American dollars/USD/$$ for the ps3 and/or 360 bundle. 10 people will get the ps3 bundle and 10 people will get 360 bundle.

There is one queue for the people wanting the 360 version and one queue for the people wanting the ps3 version.

And the people from the 11th to 60th place will only have to pay 1 sek for the game.

I'm not that good at english but I hope that you guys will understand.

@Trocadero: You're not that good at reading either, I take it. This has been said before, several times.

Also, I don't get all the "get a life" comments in this thread. As a gamer I've endured remarks like that my whole life, albeit not for doing something like this, but for not being out "jocking it up" with beer, babes, ho's and whatnot. It's one of the worst, most elitistic remarks one can make and shows little or no respect whatsoever. I'm very disappointed to see such a bashing coming from people I presume are gamers themselves and if I were 14 I would fucking jump at the chance to get a free console.

I'm the girlfriend of one of those "idiots", I'm not camping for the game but im there almost every day. You should see how much fun they acctually have, there's music, party and games going on 24 hours a day. And they get a lot of support from peoples walking by, both swedish people and tourists.

I should also say that some of the campers are doing this as a political statement. There's a lot of people living on the streets in sweden and people hate them and spit at them every day, noone really helps them. But the campers at Webhallen can live for free, without the police chasing them away, they get free food from the restaurants around and places to take a shower. And as if that wasn't enough they get a free 360/PS3 for it! If people was this helpfull to all people around them Sweden would look much different from the country full of hate that it is today. So for me and my boyfriend who actually havn't got anywhere to live this is just perfect, not idiotic!

Thank you for all prejudistic comments about Sweden, most fun I ever read for a long time :D
I especially liked the one "Swede's are the Canadians of Europe" or something like that since we're a friendly people and good at sports. Some of you bastards called us dumb and that really cracked me up, haha! Cheers!

On topic I'd say that the Norwegian guy is half-right on the demand/supply-part but it's really a hardcore social thing and not an act of desperation. If you want to compare it to LOTR or SW-fans who raised some tents for every movie that came out, so be it. But at least our geeks wont get inspired by the game and start a fuckin massacre on some highschool or hijack tank and go on a personal carnage down a street or some of that other stuff you've seen the topshelf-dumbass-american done. And we aint got metal detectors or drugdogs on our fuckin kindergardens, we don't look like we're about to pop and our currency doesn't drop like a brick to the ocean floor. So I guess we aren't all that dumb after all :D
And well, ok, it's not so smart to freeze your arse of for a friggin free console and game but at least you got something to tell your grandkids instead of "Oh I flamed a country on the internet and somebody actually gave a fuck"

@GTA4Sweden I was in Paris this weekend, and our social problems is nothing compared to theirs. Sure, we got outsiders and bums but at least we try to give them options. You should see how they do it in France, you'd be horrified!

Peace! Love reading your stuff by the way. Haven't just written anything yet..

Being able to do that (not actually for a want to do that) is why being a socialist would kick ass. I could lounge outside a videogame store while other people pay to feed me, AND buy my videogame.
