Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Well, isn't that a pleasant surprise? The first gameplay footage for Gears of War 2 has arrived a bit earlier than we originally expected it to, thanks to 1UP.

Without giving too much away, I will say that the video above reveals Gears of War 2 to be a beefed up version of the original game, which is not a bad thing at all. More enemies on-screen, larger firefights, improved visuals, and a new roster of chainsaw attacks ... it's looking like Epic Games has taken everything that made the first Gears enjoyable and expanded upon it.

Two more videos will be out shortly, so check back here before too long.

I wanted to see all the new tech implemented like the soft body stuff, besides that it looks like gears same ol.

Looks better, pretty much what I expected. I wanna punch Cliffy B. for wearing that shirt.

Douche.

I really can't bring myself to give a fuck unless they announce 360/PC simultaneous releases. Gears of War was so done and played out and forgotten about that even though a PC version is out now, I have no interest bothering to try it out.

Looks like the same stuff to me. Not really complaining coz GoW1 still looks great, but still not really worth all that hype imo..

Looks great..just like the first one. What I really want to know is not what it will look like but how will the multiplayer be? Are they going to have dedicated servers this time around and get rid of the peer to peer crap that give the host superhuman abilities?

If they do that..they have my sixty bucks.

And now that the video has mostly loaded, when did Marcus take lessons from Sam Fischer?

Yeah, if GoW2 has the host advantage, I won't be playing multiplayer for long. What it really needs is 4-player co-op.

Do any 360 games have dedicated servers? Do people actually rent out console servers for CoD4 and Halo3? How would that even work?

How many players in Gears multiplayer? My guess is 16 players. 8 players perteam. I came to this conclusion logically. Since each of the 4 COG and 4 locust player is represented in Gears 1 multiplayer. That's 8 players. We've now seen three new cogs and a few new locusts for Gears 2. There's probably one more new cog player and a locust we haven't seen. So 8 cogs. Each player has to be represented in multplayer. 8 locust as well. 16 players in Gears 2

Contrary to popular belief I do play my 360 just not as much as my PS3. Currently playing Lost Odyssey.

I liked the first Gears..just hated the host advantage of the multiplayer.

It looks nicer than the first but I bet it won't run so good on my 360. It seems to hate all UE3 games. The new abilities and guns are very nice. I like the single shot weapon because as long as its accurate I would use it all the time.

Also, I would say that PC version won't be out right away. Probably a timed exclusive. Though it will probably not be as long a wait for this one to be ported

Big surprise, exactly the same game, very few new features. The same what epic did with UT, just make the same game over and over again. I won't make the mistake of buying their games again.

It’s not really fair to comment on the graphics from shitty streaming video like this; I’m sure they look at least slightly better than the original Gears. But what is noticeably different — streaming video or not — is that there’s a lot more action on-screen, as Grim pointed out, as well as the new blind fire ability and the chainsaw duels. Nice.

Isn't this game supposed to have 4-player co-op? I've always been under that impression, but maybe I was wrong.

It looks really neat, but I don´t think there is gonna be more revolutionary levels with super action.

I've gotta say, I love the way that level is set up. It looks good. I don't really see why we need it to add a million things to the original. They seem to've put together another fun game with a few tweaks and add-ons, and that's enough for me. I'm optimistic.

Put your pants back on guys, that footage wasnt running on a console, it was running on a development rig. There is NO WAY it will look that good on your 360. Im sure it'll look good, but not as good as that demo footage.

For a series like GoW, I think it's not only fine to only have small, incremental changes/updates to the sequels but almost necessary. The Xeno series basically tried to reinvent itself with each new episode and regardless of whether you feel that the changes made in each one were improvements, it made the storytelling feel a bit disjointed and kind of hampered the overall experience.

I'm liking that Epic is keeping things pretty close (if not identical) to how they were in GoW1, if only because that one did such a good job of things.

the blue sky is a nice upgrade though; hopefully they've listened to our pleas and use colour in more than one level.

I think the part that impressed me the most was using the Locust body as a shield. It kinda looked like Marcus went Solid Snake for a second.

Aside from the visuals not being very much improved over the first one (especially the character models), it looks like it's gonna be a much better game. Multiplayer should be amazing as well.

Awesome, chainsaw dueling. Also when he picked up that locust and used him for cover, but isn't that a bit like using a borg for cover? They don't freaking care about killing that guy to get to you, I'd think. It was awesome when he pushed the locust off the edge, though.
arcadias's Avatar
arcadias at 05/10/2008 07:40
Looks like the same old GoW formula, but with some new Chainsaw dueling, body shields, new guns and finally some fscking variety in the executions. Do want 4 player coop and a slightly bigger colour palette (yeah right, that'll happen). I don't think they'll be able to lose the host advantage issue though. Its just a fact of life that the player hosting will get the smoothest gaming experience.

Kinda like Jim said, it's more of the same, it seems, which I find disappointing, but I did very much enjoy the first game, so why not another go 'round?
Using the Locust as a body shield, though? That looks completely stupid. I hate how these games represent 400+ lb behemoths as being weightless. Marcus, badass as he is, couldn't haul that thing around like that. It's just like when you kill a Berserker in the first game and then kick it's light-as-a-feather corpse all over the place as you jog. It's a goddamn 2 ton monster, not a ragdoll! I don't care how dead I made it!

Wow...That looks GREAT.

I bought the first GoW on a whim figuring it would be alright and I loved the game. My friend and I played through the entire game on co-op on every level of difficulty and loved every minute of it.

Can't wait to show my friend this. He'll poo his pants.

I liked the new animations, body shields, the epic big ass locust monster...thing...the hundreds of locust soldiers...

Pwn.
