Quantcast

As a musician, I'm always fascinated by the behind-the-scenes videos for ... well, anything musical. The above video is even more of a treat, seeing as how it combines my two favorite things: music and videogames.

This video is a developer's diary that lets us see how the recording of Mirror's Edge (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) theme song "Still Alive" went down. The track, performed by Swedish rock/pop star Lisa Miskovsky, has now sold over half a million copies and is celebrating its sixth week on the Billboard charts. Not bad for a videogame song!

The song was free on PSN a couple weeks ago so go nab it if it's still free.

Hmm, makes you wonder if more western games will start actually producing opening themes to their games with this kind of success story. I mean Japanese games and anime tend to do it quite a lot, especially with the Tales of the Abyss anime reminding me just how much I love that track.

Great song! It's good to see some western games get this kind of treatment. Some games do feel more like an interactive movie than a video game.

Some other favorites:
- "Reset" by Ayaka Hirahara (Okami)
- "Late Goodbye" by Poets of the Fall (Max Payne 2)
and of course...
- "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton (Portal)

Even though I love symphonic scores to my very core I wish that more games broke away from them and made bad ass themes like Still Alive.

Did this video just come out, though? If it just came out they sure are tooting their horn a bunch about a game that is supposedly not getting a sequel.

The soundtrack is one of the few redeeming qualities about Mirror's Edge. It perfectly matches the visual style in a beautiful way. Like running through a field of flowers with a loved one on a beautiful spring day... then you trip and land in a steaming pile of gameplay.

If only they spent this amount of caring for the actualy gameplay.

I thought Mirrors Edge was a really well put together game. The only problem was the story. It was really predictable and was wishy washy.

Great song too. Really loved the piano in it.
