Beauty is skin deep: Calling out the graphics pimps photo

There is a term among the gamer community the describes a certain subsect of gamers interested only in how impressive a game looks -- "graphics whores." These are people who get excited over how a game looks more than how it plays, and will easily dismiss any title that isn't up their visual standards.

Just like there can be no smoke without fire, so too can there be no whores without pimps. These are the people that justify the shallow judgment of a title based purely on aesthetics, mainly because that is how they are selling their games. Prompted by the recent resurgence of Killzone 2 talk, I decided to voice my feelings about the "graphics pimps," and why I am sick and tired of hearing about how great a game looks.

Hit the jump as I call out the graphics pimps and all their beautiful chicanery.

First off, let it not be said that graphics aren't important, because they most assuredly are. Just like nobody wants to read a book printed in a bad font or watch a badly shot film, nobody wants to play a game that looks like complete and utter garbage. Beautiful visuals have their place, and can make a good game even better by virtue of slick animation and gorgeous scenery. However, graphics alone do not a game make, and with the ever-increasing thirst for high-definition eye candy, the focus on gameplay sometimes seems worryingly absent.

Killzone 2 is certainly not exclusive in this, but it has certainly been one of the most obvious. Developer Guerrilla and publisher Sony have almost obsessively sold Killzone 2 on its visual quality alone. First they tried to fool us with the notorious "in-game" footage that turned out to be little more than a fabrication, and ever since then the developers have been desperately trying to make the game look as good as they claimed it would, and convince us that it will look amazing.

Nary a word, however, is said about how the thing will actually play.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating, because I honestly don't care how good a game looks if it all falls apart when I finally get a controller in my hand. There have been many games that are graphically impressive but lack anything of value beyond the visual aspect -- Black was a perfect example of this, a game that proved you actually can polish a turd. However, many gamers seem to buy the story over and over, letting developers pull the wool over their eyes and dazzle them with pretty pictures. Distracted by such photorealistic treats, gamers don't stop to think whether or not it will actually be a good game, or just a good-looking game.

I'm a gamer, not an art critic, and if all I cared about was how something looked, I would spend my time reviewing paintings. I have become sick of the term "in-game footage," and am of the opinion that any developer who uses that term is a developer not confident about its title's gameplay. If all you can talk about is what's on the surface, I am led to believe that there's very little depth under the hood. It's all well and good to wow us with gorgeous images, but sooner or later, you are going to have to deliver something of substance, or get the fuck off my radar. I have no time for vapid and shallow non-entities with nothing but looks on offer -- the game equivalent of Paris Hilton.

The way Killzone 2 has been marketed offends me. I find it pretty vulgar to see a game sell itself purely on something so utterly cursory, especially from a series that lacks pedigree. Many of us seem to have forgotten that the original Killzone was an average and generic FPS across the board -- repetitive and unable to stand out on anything but -- unsurprisingly -- how good it looked for a PS2 game.

The market has pretty much proven that it cares more about games than graphics. One need only look at the last generation -- and the massive success of the PlayStation 2 -- to see that. Despite its hardware being inferior to that of the GameCube and the Xbox, the PS2 is still the most successful home console to date with worldwide sales of over 127 million units -- a number that increases even in this current generation. It beat its graphically superior competition because it had the best library of games, not because it had the best water effects.

Going back a generation before then, one need only look at how the Dreamcast failed to gain enough momentum to replace the original PlayStation before the PS2's arrival. Handhelds, too, have gone to show how looks aren't everything -- the Nintendo DS is a wild success story, despite not being as powerful as the PSP, which is only now starting to gain big momentum in Japan.

Need I even mention the Wii?

The fact is, Killzone 2 may very well be an excellent game -- but I don't know its gameplay potential, and I don't have the first clue because all I keep hearing about is how good it looks. I haven't been given anything to convince me it will be a good game, only a good piece of eye candy. It's not like we ever truly know how enjoyable a title is until we get our own hands on it, but we usually have a clue as to whether the game will impress us, and I must confess that outside of some lovely animations, I have not the slightest inkling whether this is a game I want to play, or merely look at and say "that's pretty, now give me my Metal Gear Solid."

By all means, if a game looks gorgeous, then show it off. However, if that's all you can talk about, then don't expect everyone to be filled with confidence, because beauty is only skin deep. Stop saying things like "this is in-game footage" in a desperate ploy to impress us, because it betrays your own one-dimensional approach to game design. If that's all you care about, then I don't expect anything more than generic gameplay from vapid designers. You could well be creating an intense and jaw dropping playing experience, but that's not the impression you give me when all you're talking about are the aesthetics.

I love a beautiful game, but I love beautiful gameplay better. That's all I'm trying to say.

IGN previewed it, and said it played well, kind of like cod4.

TRY AND PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR REAR JIM. Just because you are not a real gaming journalist who makes stupid claims like this. Killzone2 will be good. revolutionary? i doubt it. but good.

At least those guys are for real. I wish you could of posted this again with out killzone 2 being in the middle of it. Then it would make more sense.

Killzone 2 will look amazing, but play kind of like cod4 knock off. If that is the case, sign me up.

@hexfix "Just because you are not a real gaming journalist who makes stupid claims like this." -- What does that even mean? Jim's giving his opinion on what he prefers in his gaming, go over to Heretic's blog if you want to bash someone who's giving his opinion on a specific game.

Also, I don't want to play a prettier "cod4 knock off", and if you do you need your head checked. Not to mention that COD4 is good-looking enough as is, developers should be striving to make something better than what's already there, not just copy/paste gameplay with a graphics upgrade. I hope Killzone 2 is amazing, so I can finally buy a PS3 for something other than MGS and FF.

And Dan CiTi... Crysis... I don't give a damn about Halo, but better than CoD4 and Mass Effect...

You silly, silly man.

I totally agree, but the funny thing about all of this is: I don't even think the Killzone 2 graphics even look that good. Sure, they have all the high res texture and effects and whatever other mumbo jumbo you want to talk about, but that all goes to waste if the art direction of a game sucks. And in Killzone's case, it does. It's the ugliest pretty game ever, or at least that's what all the footage they've shown has lead me to believe.

Aren't we all grapic whores sometime? Yes, Killzone2 looks amazing, but will the end product play well? Nobody really knows. And since the game won't be out until next year, we shouldn't even care about it.
Also other examples:
MetalGearSolid has always been promoted by showing the graphics especially cut scenes. But since there is little doubt, that MGS4 will have fantastic gameplay, nobody questions that.
Ucharted - Drake's Fortune looks amazing, but the gameplay isn't anything special. Still it sells mainly because of the graphics.

And about the Wii: The gameplay of most Wii games is nothing special, but the control method makes it interesting. If you would map the controls to buttons, the gameplay would be something, you wouldn't want to touch with a ten-foot pole.

If he was an elite gaming journalist, why was he not at the gamersday convention playing the games and informing us about them? Instead he has no clue and is bitching about it killzone's game play with out even playing the damn thing.

The game is not finished. They are still probably working on the game mechanics. So it's foolish to even make a claim like Jim did about this game, at least until he played it.

Marketed? They are giving us graphical teasers. This is not marketing. The damn game is not finished, how can they talk about their level design and game mechanics if they are not finished with them? Graphics are an easy way to let people see progress. This has been going on for years, long before all this blog crap. This is how all the magazines showed us up coming games. This is not marketing as you think it is.

Do you see nintendo going "Look at our awesome game controls in mario" No. They showed video, and screen shots, JUST LIKE FRIGGEN KILLZONE 2 when it was in its early stages.

Jim, I think the same thing could be said about Ninja Gaiden 2 as well. But since this is a sony title, lets rag on it because you have it out for sony.

Jim, No, I seriously said something that upset you, it should. If you were a real gaming journalist, you would of been at the gamersday conf playing the pre build, then you could open your mouth and sound intelligent about killzone's game mechanics. But seeing how its not done yet, how on earth can they talk about it in that way?

Like i said, This is true about LAIR. But the verdict is still out on killzone 2, it's not done.

Screen shot teasers is not marketing in the way that you imply.

Isn't it the game reviewers job to talk about the mechanics as well?

When was the last time you saw and add that said, "super responsive controls" The X button really makes him jump well. The screen moves great with the controls. You interact with environments with precision easy to use controls that make the game fun? The controls and levels make the gameplay amazing?

YOU HEAR THAT IN REVIEWS. NOT MARKETING. well HARDLY EVER.

PSP Killzone was pretty good BTW. A big improvement over the original. Who knows. They are spending a lot of time on this, I think it could be better than the original easily on that alone. Simple deduction.

The problem is if they don't stick in a "In Game Footage LAWL" tag then we end up with the stupid bitch fest we had last year with the 'is it rendered or not?' scandal. And that was bloody annoying to say the least.

And I'm excited about the mega destructible evironments, so they're not promoting the game ENITRELY on gfx, from what I can see.

Saying that, as has already been said, awesome gfx do have their place in marketing, as an initial "Wow" factor. It's certainly what made me pay attention to this game above all the other crappy eff pee esses coming out. (Like Haze, which is as much as running a hairy balls gauntlet.)

I agree, the focus is too much on graphics these days, there is hardly any progress in gameplay. A major letdown for me was unreal tournament 3, it wasn't even that pretty and the gameplay was pretty much the same but less satisfying. Epic seems to think that making a game look more realistic involves an absurd amount of shaders and exaggerated design & inflated characters (just like in GoW). Most likely, GoW 2 will be exactly the same as GoW 1, cause we all know what Epic is like right ? Have people forgotten what games are about...Remember those bullfrog games (or games from other ancient developers), now that was entertaiment. I still find more joy in playing games like diablo 2 or dungeon keeper1, than more recent games. Especially EA is destroying the gaming experience. Review scores often depend on how much hype there is around a game, like halo3 which was a pretty decent, but normal, shooter. Open your eyes and dont let reviewers make a decision for you, the #1 reason for playing a game is the gameplay!! Atleast, people USED TO PLAY games for fun!

Heh, I gotta say that the whole "in game footage" thing rather confuses me. Isn't all footage, cinematics included, in the game? I know I'm being a pedant here, but it's just another good example of how marketing most of the time is trying to trick us. The Mirror's Edge trailer is another example of this. I just don't believe that is how the game is going to look when I'm playing it and actually controlling my character.

Very well written article. There is one awful little thing I need to point out though... the shameful little "digg" marker... Seriously, why? :(

I want it all.

This is why i will never go near any wii game made by nintendo. I hate all the characters in nintendo games. I cannot identify with them at all.

I don't care how good nintendo games play, If i do not care about the characters and the point of the game, no good game mechanics will make me play it.

GTA 4 - yeah I said it, the shimmering shadows and AA look garbage but it just does not matter.

Thing is, the recent Killzone videos have some horrible effects, the explosions look rubbish and the whole feel looked like a sci-fi COD3. I may be wrong on this but forecasted rating on metacritic will be 83%

Excellent article as always Sterling. As usual, I agree with most of your saliant points. The exception being that I actually really liked Killzone myself (the story, atmoshphere, etc. really struck a chord with me, I can't really explain why). I love to read these editorials of yours! The graphics pimps need to be jailed, and whores, re-educated.

I suppose the one thing I'm alittle on the fence about is the issue of the "Actual Gameplay Footage" tag we see on trailers these days. I am not so against it. As the the gap between FMV and gameplay began to close to tightly at the onset of this generation, I actually found myself in need of being told at times. This is, of course, not to disagree with your point that it's a plee to draw attention to graphical prowess over other things; however I find that in todays generation, the ability to meld cinematic quality visuals with innovative controls, functions, etc has become an almost inseperable part of actual gameplay, and a testament to quality programming. A good example of what I am trying to say would be Uncharted. Beautiful graphics actually contributed to the gameplay in a unique way. By creating a vivid, crystal clear jungle, the game was able to chisel away the film-game distinction and make me feel like I was part of an Indiana Jones style action flick. I am not attempting to cheapen the merit of the actual gameplay mechanics; however, without those graphics, at least to me, part of Uncharted's actual gameplay charm would have started down the slipper slope into generic cover-based shooter town.
My poin here is, if someone hadn't told me that Uncharted video's that I'd scene were actual gameplay, I may not have given it a second glance. And I am far from a graphics whore.

This brings me to a question I'd like to ask you. What are your impressions in regards to Mirror's Edge? The recent trailer boasts the "actual gameplay footage" lead in. The title seems to be another example where flawless graphics work to create an immersiveness that is integral to the gameplay itself.

If I have missed the "games cannot stand and should not be advertised on graphics alone" point here entirely, please feel free just to tell me so. I didn't really write this to disagree with you so much as to discuss some of the thoughts that've been rattling around in my head lately in regards to graphics as of late that your opinions reignited. Again, thanks for the excellent read.

Half-Life

When that game came out the graphics were way dated.

I think that the reason Jim used Killzone2 as an example was because they purposefully gave us bullshit the first time around, saying that these amazing graphics made the gameplay look amazing. I mean come on, if you actually thought that the first trailer they fed us was actual gameplay then there is no way you play games. That was so much bullshit. Therefore Jim, being the respectable gaming journalist he is uses Guerilla as an example. They are using graphics as a selling point. Do you see nintendo doing that? I don't think i've seen a single commercial of theirs not showing gameplay. That's all nintendo is about, and that's why they can reuse franchises like they do. The game mechanics are tested and proven and we gamers love it.

Think about Metroid Prime for the gamecube. Until we actually saw footage of it, everyone was just gonna buy it because of the previous metriods. The graphics just made the game that much better, especially considering that game was on the cube.

Once again, Jim, you are right. Reading this, I thought of my actual reading. I recently bought ESSENTIAL: Iron Man (you know, the compilations of the classis issues of Iron Man that are essential to know the character). Imagine my surprise when I opened it and found out it was black & white!! Comics were colored in the sixties, so why can't I have it colored in the 21st centry. It was still worthwhile because the price tag (the mexican equivalent to 20 bucks) includes Tales of Suspense 39-72 (the first 33 issues of The Knight in Modern Armor!!), and sure being B&W gives it a certain retro feeling... My point being, in this case being B&W is the only thing that keeps this TPB from being the perfect deal, but its still awsome because it has one thing: SUBSTANCE.

A game that relies on how good it looks may be the perfect eye candy for a minute, but a sole game cannot sustain itself on it. Batman: Dark Tomorrow has beautiful cut scenes, but the game sucks balls big time. If someone asks you about a game, and your answer is: looks good, nice cut scenes... stay away from it.

Hey Jim, thanks for writing this article. It's refreshing to finally have an opinionated realist working for a popular gaming blog these days. Seems all I come across these days is hype, hype, hype and no real criticism, which is what we really need. I've been really unsatisfied with the state of gaming pretty much since the release of the 360 and the consoles after it. I feel a bit alienated from gaming these days, as I'm just not happy with how most of the games play nowadays.

I know I'm starting to sound like an old man...and at 24 years old, I just might be to most of the commenters. But really, guys... Quake 4? Enemy Territory? Seriously, I think this is getting out of hand. How much is this game going to cost? It's already reported at $20 million, which is still higher than the average PS3 game. All that for just the graphics? Come up with a good gameplay idea, and then build the graphics around it. That's apparently what was done with Bioshock (take System Shock 2, and give it a 7th gen shine. ;) )

I don't see the relevance of constantly citing Killzone 2. You said yourself you've not played it and therefore don't know whether it's any good or not. It just seems quite unfair and merely a reason to bash Guerilla or Killzone or Sony or whoever.

This would've been a much better article if you'd used a different game to illustrate your point (preferably one you've actually played). Having said that, it's a pretty tired point anyway. Gameplay is better than graphics, yeah we get it. It's just about the most obvious point anyone could make about games.

You have to understand, Jim, that in lieu of a game actually being out a lot of graphic whorage is what people seize upon to fill the void: you can't very well talk about gameplay that you've only heard about in press releases, but you can put some stock in a screenshot, and it gives a quick avenue to praise.

I haven't edited my personal info in almost a year..

I hate the nintendo characters. Sonic and solid snake won't change that. A plumber with a big nose who is a drawf? no thanks..

Smash brothers is ugly, because the characters are ugly.

Comments policy

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
