Beautiful Katamari jilts PS3 at the altar, elopes with Wii photo

At the end of last month, we reported on a rumor that Beautiful Katamari would dump the PlayStation 3 and move over to the Wii. Those rumors have now been confirmed and Namco's cult roll 'em up sequel is officially headed to both the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Do you remember the show Animaniacs? Do you remember on that show, one of the characters was a skeleton who had terrible things happen to him constantly? Sony is that skeleton right now.

The idea of Katamari hitting the Wii was never a shocker and is sure to be an excellent addition to the console's library, but I doubt Sony is as happy as Nintendo right now. As per the original rumor, Namco has cited programming issues as the reason why the PS3 is getting left out in the cold. Presumeably, all that Blu-ray was too much for one little Katamari to handle. Given Sony's awful run of luck lately, news like this has become less and less of a surprise and at this rate, anything that can go wrong for the poor company is going wrong. Hopefully in ten years, if the PS3 completes its marathon as Sony claims, this calamitous era will be but a footnote. Right now, however, it still sucks to be Sony. It really, really sucks.

Why can't they just release it for both?

*dramatic pause*

Is it really so difficult to develop for the PS3 that they can't even make a frickin' Katamari game for it?

*rimshot*

HAHAHAHAhahahahaaa... ...I kill me! ...ha ha... ...ha... er, *ahem* ...never mind. That wasn't funny at all. Sorry, I guess I'm still in Nintendo Fanboy™ mode after that "no lightsaber game" story. Seriously, though, this sucks pretty hard for Sony. Really, why can't they release it for both? *shrugs*

Anyway, to all the people bashing Jim for posting bad news about Sony all the time... well, it's kind of hard to post good news about Sony when, you know, there isn't all that much of it to post. And for those still comparing Jim to Summa, this is totally different. Whereas Jim only posts bad news about Sony because that's pretty much all there is lately, when there is good Sony news every once in a while, he posts that too. Summa, on the other hand, had the awe-inspiring ability to make even bad Sony news seem like good news (and, more egregiously, the ability to make good Wii news seem like bad news). Also, I don't think I've ever seen Jim make a snarky, snide pot-shot of a comment at Sony fanboys in the same manner that Summa always, ALWAYS baited those of Nintendo. For what it's worth, I made the same mistake of comparing Jim to Summa at first, too, but I've long since seen the error of my ways.

If anything, I think it's more an issue of the void that was left with Summa's departure not having been filled yet, so people are trying their best to mold someone into that void simply to return things to some kind of shitty status quo. In this case, the victim of this seems to be Jim. Personally, I hope that void is never filled, because we can do without that sort of shit.

Programming issues? Are they joking? The code is friggin' ported from last-gen systems that doesn't utilize a fraction of the power in the 360 or the PS3.

If the Wii can handle it, then the PS3 can handle it without utilizing any of its SPE coprocessors. This "PS3 is so hard to program" is such bullshit. Just say it like it is: the PS3 is too expensive so the game won't have a large enough customer base.

I personally caught that the 3y warranty only covered the RROD... But that's just me.

---

I have long said that I think all this losing exclusives is pure BS - as well as lost multi-platform games. Now, before I am to continue - let it be known that I am no fanboy. If I buy a game that's exclusive, then it's exclusive. If I buy a game that's multi-platform, I buy it for the best offered version. Thus is why I only own two games for the PS3 at this current moment.

I see these issues as a double-side. For one, it's always the argument from development that there are too many problems programming for the PS3. Is the problem a PS3 caused issue, or a developer caused issue? It is in their own choice whether or not they want to step up and take that challenge to overcome the obstacles of learning to program for it. But lately, developers have been really dropping the ball on effort. Instead they just go with the easiest route possible, damn the attempts at harnessing a greater processing power - despite what that might mean for a game. Now, i'm not saying that properly coded games for the PS3 are going to look God Almighty greater than the 360. But how will we, the consumers, ever know if Developers are unwilling to show us the possibility...

The only thing we PS3 owners have to look forward to, that has the slightest chance of sparking developers into action, are their first party games and their ties remaining on definite exclusives.

So here's looking to the future. May it not be reduced to generic repetative gaming due to lazy development.

I like how the latest tack for Sony fanboys is to complain that developers are too lazy and uninspired to make the effort to program for a machine that is by most accounts difficult to develop for. In order to make use of technology they do not yet have a proper grasp of, they will be forced to expend significantly larger amounts of money than they would otherwise. As Burnt Meatloaf stated, the PS3 is generally viewed as not yet having a large enough install base to warrant such expenditures, thus developers are forced to look elsewhere. It is still a business after all, and spending ridiculous amounts of money to produce a game that has no chance of making a profit will never be a plausible idea.

Additional note since it sounds so much like I am saying the PS3 is the future. Makin me sound like some kind of lame ass Sony PR monkey...

I currently see the PS3 as the only option for the future. The 360 is a great console, as is the Wii. But graphically and from a technical standpoint as spoken about - the Wii is running a different race. A race that the PS3 and 360 are battling with... I honestly asked myself this and I still don't know the real answer - when MS releases its new console here in only a few years now - given the projected timeframe for the 360's lifespan... How will they deal the processing? Do we honestly expect that MS will simply slap 5-8 General Processing Cores in a box with a giant fan and an old DVD player? I sure as hell hope this is not the case, and I personally can see MS eventually, with their next console, taking the plunge into the winner of the High Definition Disc Format, and most likely attempting to utilize and strike a deal to gain the cell processors power... I honestly don't feel that a console the size of a small PC is the "future" of gaming.

I see katamari as a Wii game, honestly it doesnt need any HD graphics from what I have seen + it looks like allot of fun that Wii can perfectly manage (honestly I have never seen or played nor interested in this game...). Looks like a side game you buy from DL off the XBL or PSN to me.

Now, thats a great move that its coming to the Wii, for 360 idk, u might Red Ring for playing it on a "power surge protector" then wait another 1-2 weeks to be able to play again the second level. I dont see this as a "omfg wii'r duumed PS3 own3rz!" game thats going to change the fabric of time and space, but I do agree its another red tag name to add to the list.

btw, while this game is being developed, Im already expecting a similar "cute fun" game called littlebigplannet for the PS3 which I can actually play online with friends.

well enough of my rant, im back to playing "Odins Sphere" ... last boss 3 headed undead beast is kicking my ???in ass...

@ Burkhart:

I love how I made a comment above yours making fun of the retarded "Sterling is biased against Sony" claim, and you go right ahead and say pretty much the exact same thing.

@ SuMizzle:

In regards to favoritism, you guys report on the 3yr warranty, but fail to mention it only covers the RROD. Had it been Sony that extended their warranty to only cover a specific error, that had been occurring since the system's launch, lords knows how it would have been reported. Again, that may be why you catch the misguided shit from commenters. Who knows.

Maybe you should read the article again.

so how many millions did microsoft pay for this title also, microsoft is just the rich kid in the neighborhood buying all their friends right now. when developers get a handle on the much more powerful ps3 the nerdy microsoft rich kid will get beat down again most likely. Developers need to step up and stop being lazy. but then again as long as microsoft can keep throwing out money like they do why would they want to. they can make millions and release last gen quality games like katamari or build 2 extra levels for 50 million. hahaha

heres your episodic content, please only play for 30 min at a time so your xbox doesnt burn up.

as for katamari : people actually play this game above age 12?

@ SuMizzle:

But how much of an problem is the disc read error/disc scratching? I've never encountered anyone who has actually had that issue, whereas a huge number of people have had the RRoD. That's like having to include a disclaimer that says "This only applies to the RROD and not any of the other issues the 360 hardware suffers from, like the time Bill Steinberg from Salt Lake City, UT stubbed his toe when he accidentally tripped over his console in a drunken stupor."

I don't know, Jim. I am personally rather confused as to whether or not he's a Sony fanboy, an Xbox Hater, or a Sony Hater!

Wait wait. He must be a Nintendo Fanboy *nod* It's the only option! Sonyhater in the name, microsoft hater in the message! Rather villainous.

A hater who hates all but Nintendo. We see. Yes, we can see how this can happen... Fearsome... With a Royal Puff, we finish this message.

Just chiming in on the talks between SuMizzle and Mxy.. Not saying which one of you is right, but on my first 360 - I had drive failures and lots of wobbling going on just a month after I bought the system... Returned it, got a replacement.

Damn thing still shakes the floor when its powering down. It's pretty ominous, really. Kind of like I shot the thing with a tranquilizer dart and it's trying desperately to rumble it's way over to drop a picture or something... It's just really really loud is all i'm saying - I wonder if that's a problem or if it's normal.

" seem to remember when the wii was first released, and the creator of katamari dismissed the wii as a gimmick and declared he would never bring katamari to the system. over 3 to 1 wii to ps3 system sales later, he comes crawling back. "

Um... not really... he left the project after "We love Katamari" stating that Namco would probably release more sequels without his involvement... the first of those was "Me & my Katamari" on PSP and now the same guy who oversaw that game is working on "Beautiful Katamari"

Nobody is more appreciative of that than me, Mizzle. It's refreshing to have someone disagree with me, and do it without insulting me.

For the record, my last broken 360 did have a disc read error, Mxy. I thought it was just Oblivion, but N3 and Overlord both had errors so I just took it back to the store and got it replaced without fuss.
