Be on the lookout for Diablo III in the 'next few years' photo

Here's a bit of sad news for Diablo III fans. So sad, in fact, that if you happen to be one of those "I can never let anyone see me cry" guys, you should probably run off to a secluded area. Like, right now. Go!

Activision Blizzard CFO Thomas Tippl recently talked about how the Blizzard side of the business has been going, and more importantly, when exactly all of the studio's games are coming out. According to Kotaku, we shouldn't expect to see Diablo III until 2011 at the earliest.

2010 will be a busy year for Blizzard, what with StarCraft II, the new and improved Battle.net, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and whatever else may be in the works. This of course pushes those StarCraft expansions and Diablo into the "next few years."

As a Blizzard fan, long waits sort of come with the membership. But you know what? It sure would be nice to say, "hey world, I had the chance to play Diablo III before you ended in 2012." Make it happen, people.

Oh, come on man. I mean, why even announce it? I know we've been technically waiting for more than ten years, but this is just torture.

This is no surprise at all. No way SC2 and D3 will come out in the same year. What we should make bets on is how many WoW expansions will come out before D3. Actiblizzion knows full well where the real money comes from.

the funny thing is, why even announce it if your going to wait 5 years. And the damn game looks and acts VERY playable from all the demos

I was hoping that 2011 would be more likely than what this indicates. I read the "not in 2010" post and was like "Okay, Q2 2011 here I come" and now they're going all activsiony and raping our souls.

On the plus side, I've been playing Diablo II a lot and brushing up my skills. The spambots are a huge problem now though.

Spoiled little gamers, it seems.

So there is a reason that Blizzard releases high quality products and it is because they've proven time and time again that they can lay golden eggs at will. They are one of the few developers who have the luxury to be able to spend as much time as they want working on a title and releasing it when it is done, rather than upholding some contractual agreement that says the game ships on X date and it better be ready by then.

I, for one, don't care if I wait a few more years to play Diablo 3. I want to play it when it is ready, no sooner. And if Blizzard says a couple more years, then I'll wait a couple more years. Plenty of other games to play now and before then. But when it comes out, I know I pretty much can clean my schedule for the next few months because it will be that good.

After 10 years we'll find out the company went down and the game was never released. A 'la Duke Nukem.

I watched Blizzcon over DTV and the game looked finished. I even half expected the final character class to be announced before Christmas. I'm going to go drink heavily now.

So re-reading that, I'm going to preempt the nitpickers by declaring when I say "at will" I mean "consistently".

Opinions on how good or bad a particular person feels aside, when you look at it from their point of view, every game they make is something dozens of other studios dream they could do with just 1 game they made.

Between the WarCraft, StarCraft and Diablo franchises, they have blockbusters practically dripping from the teets. Successful company is successful.

I was hoping for a 2010 release but I knew deep down that Blizzard wouldn't want D3 competing with SC2 so hopefully I'll only have to wait until early 2011

Wow at least there being up front about it rather than delaying it a few months every couple of months and saying "It will be here soon!".

Still hate it when they hype a game up YEARS before the actual release though. Oh well at least there's Borderlands.

Some devs must envy Blizzard, being able to announce a project and hype the hell out of it 5 years before it's release...and then they delay it, and the interest is STILL there.

I wasn't expecting it in 2010, but damn..."A few years?" What does that even mean, 2013?

Be on the lookout for Blizzard to get their heads out of their collectives asses Soon(tm)*

As life long fan of the company and WoW player since launch (all 5 years) I'm done with their crap. It used to make sense when they'd make us wait for years and come out with a really great game but since WoW hit the over all quility of everything has slid down a terribly steep slop. Coupled with the fact that the company lost all sight of every thing else it was doing to keep its eyes on its huge money maker rather then giving us more games for their other IPs every few years.

Expansions to an MMO does not equal games..

*meaning they never really will.

Did we really expect it to be soon? With Blizzard in the process of forcing conversion to battle.net accounts on all WoW subscribers it's incredibly clear that they're looking to put a huge dong in the face the gaming community. Expect to see it on the market at about the point that Blizzard and battle.net become interchangeable in conversation. There will be money when they can funnel all their content straight through there.

I don't think this has anything to do with gamers being "spoiled" as it is Blizzard piecemealing out StarCraft II and stalling Diabolo III for more time. They'll probably piecemeal that one out, too.

But ya know what? I don't really need Diabolo anyway, there are plenty of companies out there with similar or better versions of the same kind of game. Even DS, PSP and iPhone have their own dungeon hacks.

Torchlight, Phantasy Star Zero, etc. I think I'll get by.

I for one, will wait patiently until they decide to release it. As with all of Blizzards games, the wait will be worth it.

There are a ton of games to play in the meanwhile. I'm not worried.

Turbofail, let me guess, you're a teen or newish to gaming? Anyone who has been gaming for a while knows that Blizzard will just delay this a bit like they do to every game, but it will undoubtedly come out. The only games Blizzard has ever cancelled are spinoffs that didn't follow their traditional gameplay ideals.

I'm not really surprised. It just sucks that in the age of internets, we get previews 5 years before the game even comes out now. I remember Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft announcements were only made at the most a year before the game came out. I think Starcraft was 2 years early but at the time the only major source of game info were the gaming magazines back then. I miss those days.

That's alright Blizzard - Torchlight does me just fine. How can a company that has more money than some countries delay D3 further, especially when working versions have been displayed? Easy answer : they are spacing out releases to make more money from their diehard fans. Money grubbing cunts. Also: fuck WoW

Blizzard and Activision are not the same company. They've merged part of their total assets as individual companies into a subsidiary company called Activision-Blizzard. So, activate WoW.

I had the chance to wait in line for like fifteen minutes and get hands-on with D3 at PAX, and I decided not to. I reasoned that if I played it then, I would just be craving it for a year-ish until I finally snapped and broke into the Blizzard offices to play until I beat Hell mode or security dragged me off.

That decision is looking pretty damn prescient right now. If I was worried about how I'd hold out for a year, 2-3 years would have been agonizing.

@Vanilla: you're right, obviously. Blizzard has demonstrated repeatedly that not only do they deliver what they promise time after time, but also that they will take their dear sweet time to do so. Take as long as it takes, Blizz.
