Whether you like it or not they make more original programmes than any other channel and bar last years seemingly endless list of sub-standard catchphrase based sketch shows, the majority of their programming is done to a very high standard.
If it wasn't for the BBC, all the other channels wouldn't have them to use as a standard of programming and we would be in a similar state to America with endless political party funded channels and the same re-runs of two and a half men playing 3 to 4 times a day. Sort it out geeza!
The only shows of recent time that I can remember being worthy are Absolute Power and QI.
You watch too much daytime TV...have you forgotten the excellence that is Top Gear, Blue Planet, Panorama (especially the one on scientology), Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Life on Mars, the real hustle etc... they're just a few off of the top of my head. Peep show has become progressively less funny in the last series and channel four now seem to wholely rely on such shit high processed shows such as 8 out of 10 cats and the friday night project and dare I mention the infamous Big Brother?
Sorry, I feel quite stongly about this.
And in my opinion, Peep Show's last series was just as good as all the others, if not even better in some places.
The BBC cannot justify itself until it removes the stupid license fees and moves into adveritising like a real TV station, and stops showing tennis on BBC 1 and 2 while giving complete deference to all its sports coverage. Sorry, but its held to a higher standard than other TV stations because of the way if forces you to give it money. If it didn't do that, I wouldn't hold it as accountable as I do.
You see the problem here is I'm right and you're wrong :p Ok, ok you make a good argument. I will agree to disagree. Although you have just broken my theory that you are my tyler durden, i.e me writing blogs in my sleep as this is the first time I have ever disagreed with any of your opinions. Never mind, it's probably a win for my mental health.
The good shows like Buzzcocks and such have been around for a long time and still have the same writers. Back in the days when the BBC had great comedy on 2.
Ainsley Harriot is enough to have a serious vendetta against the BBC.
Their production standard is pretty high though. There's the occasioanl "shakey artsy camera" programme but not as much as other channels.
If I watch any TV I usually watch the channel 4 channels or even sometimes....Channel 5! Come on, that extraordinary people show was pretty interesting. But apart from that TV sucks now days especially in comedy. TV is lacking a lot of good comedies. Phone Jacker?! Seriously?
I hope this is videoGaiden. I don't remember ever seeing that on BBC here in England. I thought it was only aired in Scotland.
@double2, I agree the beep has good points. but for £50 a year i could live with adverts. and IMHO (With the M standing for My very firmly) Channel 4 provides me more entertainment. Admittedly the bbc online is much better, and good to not have adverts on, but I can live with them.
ITV can go fuck itself, or have an illegitimate child with channel 5 called UKTV (excluding UKTV History: 24hour WW2) and go live in the arctic circle. Channel 4 does tend to push the boundaries much more, take more risks and as such get the better comedies and documentaries. the BBC seems to lagg a bit behind, and goes for the safer, but still good options.
My bet is BBC tetris... with added edutainment.
I can't remember the last good comedy I saw on BBC. UK Gold has some great classics, but on the main channels, I dunno. Top Gear and Buzzcocks is pretty much all I'd watch BBC for.
And I cannot believe there are people who will gladly pay an exorbitant license fee (that should be illegal anyway) just so they can watch uninterrupted "Boot Sale Challenge LOL"
Think of all the great comedies that came before though
The Day Today/Brasseye, Alan Partridge, Friday Night Armastice, Armando Ianucci Shows, Fist of Fun, TMWRNJ. Thats all from just one group of comedians. Armando Ianucci is fantastic, as was Chris Morris. Although Blue Jam was weird, I liked the TV series more.
Oh almost forgot to mention is again. Look at the BBC's CG team. I think BBC CGI is some of the worst anywhere. If you need an idea of what their games will be like just remember...Fightbox. *prejectile vomits*
Oh and if you're listing good comedy, may I remind you of TV Go Home's very own Charly Brooker and his current venture Screenwipe which basically just rips the piss out of all TV and how shit it is. Legendary stuff, and back for a new series on BBC 4 in autumn! Kick ass!
Fonejacker is a huge disappointment.
The BBC is an institution and like the NHS should be beyond reproach to UK/world citizens.
This can mean one thing, though: a Doctor Who game of some sort.
AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!
*I am just bored cause I can add nothing of value to this topic
Also, did ya'll notice they announced building 7 of teh wtc collapsed almost ten minutes before it fell? Don't mean to get all conspiracy theorist on ya'll but hmmmmmmm?
Whilst the BBC are theiving bastards, they are nowhere near the level of crapness that Channel 4 currently occupy.
Also, you had to have a beard in order to own a BBC computer, basically you had to look like 70's George Lucas, so if nothing else, the legacy of the BBC computer and it's three games is something to respect.
The BBC might not have shows AS terrible as Big Brother, but they also don't have anything as good as some of C4's best. Peep Show pretty much slaughters all and is probably the only new TV series I've watched all year. In fact I'm sure it is.
British TV on the whole, I must confess, is fucking awful.
Apart from that I don't watch TV much anymore- videogames seem to offer more entertainment these days.
Also Jim, I think Peep Show is a quality programme but I personally don't like it, I'm not huge fans of Mitchem & Webb or whatever their called, but I quite liked their show which appeared on BBC 2, as did the Mighty Boosh, The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, you can't compare the BBC to Channel 4. What about BBC's wild life programs? BBC 4 sometimes has some interesting stuff.
Then again the BBC does pay Jeremy Clarkson to be an arrogant prick, and a few years ago they actually gave Jim Davidson his own stand up show...you're absolutely right, BBC suck hard.
Similarly In Our Time, a genuinely enlightening Radio 4 show about the important markers in modern human evolution would never get commissioned by a commercial station. Fuck me, Jim the list is endless. The impartiality of the BBC is a fucking godsend. If you get your wish of a commercial beeb then we're all going to be much worse off. Don't base your opinion of the quality of BBC content on BBC1 and 2's comedy output. Yeah, British comedy is shite at the moment. Yeah, BBC1 and 2 put out lowest common denominator braindeath television. But that's not all the Beeb do.
Their journalism is considered among the best in the world. Their wildlife documentaries are the best there is out there, full stop, if you disagree you're wrong, shut up. Their radio covers just about every genre of music ever composed. Their website is one of the most popular sites on the internet. You maybe need to look a bit harder at what they make available before casting judgment like this because it seems to me that you're missing out on getting your tenner a month's worth.
I think they should balance out their advertising though. Around primetime - 8pm I don't see many adverts for anything besides the same kind of shows that are on at that time. So I miss out on other stuff. I know/meet quite a few people who do the same as me but maybe that's just my age group.
