Bayonetta PS3 getting fixed by Sony before US release? photo

It's no secret by now that Bayonetta on the PS3 is little more than a less-than-stellar port of the leading Xbox 360 version. Long loading times, poor framerate and altogether murkier graphics stand out to make Bayonetta inferior on the PS3, but it's now being reported that Western PS3 fans might not suffer as much as Japanese ones.

According to Gamekyo (translated by Wearetheinternetz), Sega and Platinum Games have "taken responsibility" for the slapdash port and have charged an engineering team from Sony itself with the task of bringing it up to par before the North American release. The team hopes to "guarantee" a version of Bayonetta that is equal to the PS3's considerable power.

Here's hoping they resolve the issue. Bayonetta is looking like it'll be one of 2010's standout action games and it would suck if one version was crappier than the other.

I'm getting it on 360 anyway, but there's absolutley no reason for the game to not be polished up before release, even if they have to delay the PS3 version.

That is good news. I preordered it for the 360 but over the past few months I have really started to enjoy playing games on my PS3 more, so I may have to reconsider my preorder.

Any word yet if the US will see a special edition?

Inferior port or not, that didn't stop me from importing and beating the game 5 times. I hope they do clean up the PS3 version as I still intend on picking up my preorder come January.

Well, I do hope the port is good, since my 360 RRododoeded a few days ago. Still though, even with everyone in Japan using it as a masturbatory aid, I kinda lost interest of the game within these past couple of months.

Nice!
It was sad to see the best system get such bad performance on this game...
But I'm going with the 360 anyway. Can't fit a PS3 into my budget just yet.

@ MrSadistic:

The game is far from a masturbatory aid, you should play it first before making that call.

As a person who has the PS3 version, you "pos/crappy port" people are really overblowing it. Yes, the framerate isn't 60fps, but its consistent 99.9% of the game, and hasn't stopped me from getting all Platinums on Normal, or beating the game on the hardest setting(PSN tag: NathanDrake90). The graphics still look fine, so I don't see the big deal there. The loading is the only big problem, it takes almost 30 seconds just to get into the fucking shop.

Is it a worse version than the 360 version? Yes, it is. Is the game still fricken' amazing and has my vote for GOTY2009? Yes, it is.

makes sense, since the Japanese don't even know what an XBox 360 is. This is good news.

SWEET!

With such a wide gap between the Jap and US releases, I was wondering why they wouldn't try to spiff up the PS3 version.

MAKE IT HAPPEN, SONY!

How much can Sony do in a month? The US release date is supposedly 01/05/2010, unless they've been working on this already.

Well after seeing that it sold damn near 3 times as much on the ps3 in japan and how many ps3s just sold here in the U.S they probably added all that up and figured having the words "inferior port" hanging around with god of war 3 and dantes inferno right around the corner was probably a bad idea.

It baffles me how the PS3 version went so wrong in the first place anyway...

It's not like the game is a technical powerhouse on 360...

it was made specifically for the 360, simple as that. porting that kind of software (for a third party like Sega, no less) is not that easy. plus the ps3 is a tough cookie to crack, developers seem to agree on this. That's why it's a good thing that Sony itself is involved in this.

Awesome! It's great to have Sony working on it. The problem with PS3 Bayonetta was that the game was designed specifically around the 360's architecture and Sega essentially just tried to make the PS3 emulate stuff that it just didn't work with. I'd be beyond ecstatic if this were true. Here's hoping!

This is the first time I've ever heard of the publisher supplying a strike team to optimize the code of a third party developer... This is kind of a big deal, actually.

Could you imagine if Sony took up a full time engineering pool to optimize the projects created by third party developers?

You can't see it, but right now I'm giving a standing ovation to Platinum and Sega for taking responsibility of a shadier PS3 port and to Sony for supporting a third party developer in a way I've never heard of.

In the end that shows dedication to the fanbase and is something I have to greatly admire. They could have let it ride and they still would have turned a profit from the PS3 version, but they went the extra mile. Well done.

Sony had better go to town with a tomahawk if they wish to accomplish anything. They're more than likely going to have to pry subsystem after subsystem off the GPU and reassign them to SPUs, all the while begrudgingly mumbling "GPU.. Graphics. Processing. Unit.. It's for processing the friggin' graphics..."

Shinryu108: I think Jim states that it's only going to fix for the Western market, so I don't think it has anything to do with that. Although, that would have been my initial guess as well.

Ah, another chapter in the regional exclusive arms race! If the PS3 version somehow ends up vastly improved, I'm willing to bet it'll make its way back to Japan with dual language voices (does it have that already?) and maybe some other new mode.

It's great the sony is going to fix this game instead of another publisher, it almost guarantees that the game will come out looking as good as its exclusives. What worries me is if it'll be ready in time, or that it will delay its release.

Rental at best.

Seriously...I still fail to see what the point is to this game...other than giving spank material to the throngs of zit ridden gamergeeks who will unfortunately marry the first woman who allows their penis to penetrate their vagina...if such a thing could ever happen to those unfortunate souls at all.

Lesson learned: The PS3 can damn near perfectly emulate 360, however, games still work best for the system they're designed for. GJ Sony for stepping up to the plate.

I can understand what problem Platinum Games had with Bayonetta. This is their first major game, since they started their small studio. Without the man power and resources of a large developer, somethin might suffer, namely the PS3 version. Its unfortunate that Sony still make their consoles difficult to develop for still, and while they say its to stagger it power somewhat, IMO, there's little need to do that anymore, with graphics reaching a peak. If anything, Sony should learn to use Direct X, which has been more or less industry standard for years. If they did this, they'd get more development support and costs in PS3 development would drop faster. Those stubborn japanese again.

@Glue
This game sure has something going on, if both Famitsu and Edge have marked it so highly, few games ever get a 10. You shouldn't let any sexualised crap get in the way of a good game, as some gamers (sexually active or not, do you really care?) will get their jollies from anywhere. Wet and Tomb Raider have done this dance before, so it something global to games, like it or not.

I think Bayonetta and Dark Void will keep me happy in January. One Capcom game, and the other from former Capcom staff.

I played this at PAX and surprisingly it was a LOT of fun. The booth was pretty empty and I could see why, it had a big Disney logo on top and it wasn't very flashy. My buddy told me I should check it out so I did. I'm not a big racing game fan, but I really enjoyed playing this.
