Battlefield: Bad Company video goes for massive lulz, falls a little short

2:55 PM on 12.11.2007, Jordan Grim Devore 34 comments

     video

The above video for EA's Battlefield: Bad Company may have gotten a few chuckles from me, but this is the Internet -- a place where people are accustomed to laughing so hard that their asses literally fall off.

If this clip seems at all familiar to you, perhaps you saw Valve's "meet the (insert Team Fortress 2 class here)" installment of videos from a while back. They are incredibly similar to one another in theory, but if you've witnessed the two videos for yourself, you can easily see who the victor is.

That's not to say you shouldn't watch it anyway though. To EA's credit, it's an admirable shot at revealing a character from Battlefield: BC. Whoever came up with the idea of slapping a smiley face onto a grenade deserves a huge Christmas bonus.

Unreal Tournament has smiley faces on the grenades that shoot from the Flak Cannon.

I was gonna say, I think it was Epic there, Jim.

Also, this wasn't funny at all. I never even smiled. It was so derivative of the TF2 clips it was sad.

His exaggerated movements don't match the lack of imagination that exists all around him.

TF2 wins!

Meh. I thought it was kind of funny that they censored everything, but not enough to illicit smiles or laughter. Graphics looked nice though.

Wasn't bad. Wasn't great, but certainly not bad. I'd give it 6/10 firetrucks.

It's at least better than their typical trailers that don't even try.

Christ, you guys seem like you're expecting the pinacle of hilarity from a video game trailer.
Least it was funnier than that fat guy at the VGA's.

Gosh, I'm in a pickle! I can't decide which game looks shittier - Battlefield: Bad Company or Army of Two. Total douchery.

If you guys remember E3 a few years back, there was an announcement trailer for BF:BC which was kind of like someone fallowing them around in a firefight and they blew shit up. I could be wrong in this, but I'm pretty sure it came out way before the TF2 ones. Granted the TF2 ones are awesome.

WiiSucks and MechaMonkey seem to be using the 7-10 scale that IGN uses, in which case I heartily agree. It really does deserve less than a zero. Didn't even crack a smile.

Not near the TF2, but is another kind of thing after all.
Is like that George Clooney movie, do you guys remember the name?

@Velt: You’re going to have to be a tad more specific than that, but because Three Kings is the only war movie that I can think of with George Clooney in it, I’m going to assume that’s the one you’re talking about.

Meh, I lost all faith with EA and Battlefield after BF: Vietnam. Regained it with BF2 and lost it again when they broke the game further and further with each patch.

Not that anyone is ever going to see this post, but if you download the Bad Company Frostbite video from the PSN, it's a pretty good watch. The people there seemed to have had a lot of fun making it and it actually talks about their engine and what they're trying to do with it.

It's a free download, as well.
