That's bullshit. if someone buys the game second hand, the original purchaser has already paid for their server slot which transfers with the game.

Considering that the game wont be on Steam I was not going to purchase it anyways. It is amazing at how much EA's upper management can really fuck stuff up. I mean Im not a big fan of Activision but if EA is supposed to be the industries good guy to Activision then Im on the bad guys side.
At least they dont force proprietary accounts on us. Sure they took out Dedicated servers on MW2 for PC but at least they didnt force us to sign up for a specific account and shut down the servers for MW2 online play 2 years later.
Plus now with all this Origin bull crap and Subscription services that offer little to no actual value being forced down our throats Im just getting fed up with them as a company.

The reasoning is dumb. If you buy it used they aren't paying for server space for you. They already did that for the first person that bought then traded in, your replacing an old user, not becoming a brand new one.
Oh please, the whole "server cost" argument is ridiculous. Online gaming has never been a money loss endeavor, nor will it ever be one. The amount of people who buy the game based solely on its online multiplayer component will more than offset those costs, as will the sale of DLC. In fact, it will make them more money than they spend on server space exponentially.
Again, they want us to feel like they're losing money. They have great PR departments paid to make it sound that way. In fact, the online component of games of BF3's caliber make insane amounts of money for the publisher, they simply want more money than that.

I'm slightly surprised that publishers of AAA+ shooters even bother with such petty schemes. Those titles in particular sell like hotcakes, are almost completely focused on online, and the mere idea of buying a cheaper second-hand copy a few months down the line doesn't really make much sense at all, any kind of online pass or not.
... the unfortunate thing is that this also penalizes multiple users on one PS3 where both my husband and I would have to play under one user name. I was so annoyed when I installed BFBC2 first on my husband's console only to find that I had to use his user name if I wanted to play the game online. :(

Battlefield Bad Company 2 did this and as long as it seems like I am getting free maps or something like that (as BFBC2 did) then I am totally fine with it.

If you don't want to play server costs, then stop making games that are mostly online multiplayer. Someone has to pay 60 dollars for that initial copy, and every copy should be enetitled to a lifetime of online play, whether it's the original owner or not.
I don't see this as a problem i'm pretty sure they will handle it like they handled the VIP program, people who buy a new copy will get the "online pass" for extra and free content, and people who buy it used will only have to pay $10 to get it. I don't really see too much of a problem with that, dropping a few dollars to be able to get more free content on a already great game.

Not surprised at all. We're talking about EA here. Every single high-profile game they have released in the past year or so has had some form of online pass, be it for MP or SP games, and I highly doubted that they wouldn't do the same for BF3. Although it saddens me that this is now the rule and not the exception, you cannot honestly say you were not surprised as well.
My problem with companies who implement online pass systems is that not only do they alienate people who buy used, they also say "fuck you" to the people who have more than one person playing the game with different online accounts, like say, me. For games like Battlefield, which I know for a fact my brother and I will both play, we end up spending $70 instead of just 60 because we had the gall to not buy two copies of the game. This is the type of shit that makes me just say fuck it and not buy it at all, but it seems I can't do that without being unable to play 50% of the games I want to play. What's with the sudden influx of bullcrap from the gaming industry? Online passes, DRM, day 1 DLC, single save file games? I have a feeling it'll get worse, and we'll be seeing double, triple, quadruple the amount of these on Dtoid. It's already happening.

it's gotten to the point where companies can easily get away with it. Really don't care about online passes. I'm buying the game new and I'd be spending maybe 20 seconds entering in that code. And they have a point, if someone buys the game used EA still has to pay for the server costs of that user. I'm not a big fan of this companies recent moves (Origin) but this is one that I really don't mind.
and if you create a new account there is a big process on how that is being handled in the backend

@OneRed: Hear, hear! That ultimate strategy has been there ever since the adoption of micro-transactions back in 2005. Half a decade later they genuinely work on PC/phones/tablets/whatever but as far as games consoles go, it's all about cashing in as ruthlessly and efficiently as possible.
It's a dreary future, alright. I'm just happy it starts with a genre I'm not particularly interested in. Just the same, it's amusing how those second-hand copies are demonized when the majority of games can be bought brand new, passes and all, for about third of their original asking price just a few months after their release :)

When a person gets rid of their new copy of the game, there is no way for EA to know, so they continue to maintain space in their database for not only the old user, but now the new one too.. alright, I can see that imposing a marginal cost.. but $10-$15? I don't think so. If that is the case, then they need to fire their db admin, lol. Having someone actually USE the server is what drives their out of pocket costs, not the "need to create server space and everything for you".

Maybe, instead of using money ( I think it was in the millions ) to advertise the game, they should have used that money for the so called 'Server costs'.

I'm really hating the whole Online Pass thing for multiplayer, especially since it humps the renter/used gamer of content.
Atleast with Halo/Call Of Duty when you go the non-new route your getting all the regular content with the OPTION to buy more. I just think it's silly that a few Dtoiders had to convince someone to buy an online pass so we could all play together on more than 2 maps.

Server space? An account wouldn't use 10Gb or something and anyway HDD space is fucking cheap. And also, you use the resources from the new buyer to hold the used buyer.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS.
