Battlefield 3 reveals 'Back to Karkand' expansion pack photo

Electronic Arts has revealed what it dubs a "massive" preorder incentive for Battlefield 3, the Back to Karkand expansion pack. The game takes various multiplayer maps from Battlefield 2, adding unique weapons, vehicles and Achievements/Trophies.

The package is only available to those who preorder the Limited Edition, though I'm sure EA will eventually be "generous" enough to sell it to you all later.

The first image of the pack has been released, along with an interview concerning the content, which can be found here.

Oh silly EA , dont you know it cant be an expansion pack if the game is still half a year away from release?

Its called "content".
And you are taking it away from the game, which turns it into "bullshit".

Hey we need a cover for our modern combat FPS game. I'm thinking we can have a soldier walking on a field of battle toward the camera. Then we might have a pillar of smoke, maybe a helicopter behind him. This will be great because nobody has ever done this before.

So if I preorder the Limited Edition version, which is the same price as every other normal Xbox 360/PS3 game ($59.99 U.S dollars) I get free content?

I fail to see any issues with this.

What ChillyBilly said. The EA store states the pack comes at no extra charge, the LE being the same price as a standard edition. We're jumping the gun here a bit, folks.

Strike at Karkand is definitely an awesome map, but I really don't like this premium shit. I understand there should be some incentive to the collector's edition and extra maps is neat, but it's ridiculous to announce "DLC" before the game is even out.

I hate how everyone gets so pissy about this stuff. It's free..it comes with the game, pre-order at the same price as the "normal" edition and you get free content, I don't understand how this is a bad thing. Could they include it for everyone for free..i guess sure, but instead they are using it as an incentive to get people to pre-order. It's called marketing people...it's what good publishers do for their studio's.

I hate this, "but I deserve everything and I want it now!" mentality everyone has these days.

Fuck this shit. I'm nowhere near enough of a rabid fan to buy into this bullshit.

Yeah this is so much worse than say, completely locking people out of the multiplayer for buying used. Remade BF2 maps? Alright. But I expect some original content shortly after release if this is the day one bonus

I think the issue is that you have to pre-order the game at all. It just sucks for late adopters, or any poor fool who gets it as a Christmas present.

Well, that's one way to split your player base from day 1.

Got to be one of the dumbest moves in preorder history.

The PC pre-order from Amazon is 30 pounds... that's more than fair for a game BF3's calibre and they could have easily been cheeky and charged more... so what the heck are people whining about? If they were charging £40 for the PC pack I could understand people's outrage, but this seems pretty damn fair to me compared to how other companies ride their consumers (hi COD).

This is just like Bad Company 2 and how it came with VIP mode so nothing new to see here people. This is enticing people to buy new and on day one rather than to buy a used copy so buy the game new and benefit, or buy used and don't, yout choice.

The limited edition is the day 1 copy that they release, you will be able to walk in and pick up a copy off the shelf that had the "free map" inside. Just like what Bad Company 2 did.

I pre-ordered last week from Wal-mart and I can not fucking wait.

The easy solution is to just pre-order the game and shut up about it.

People just look for reasons to bitch, even when this (presumably) won't cost you any additional money. If you can't pay off a 60 dollar game between now and the end of the year, you probably need a new job.

And splitting the player base? That's like saying Killzone 3 split it's base by including a map pack with the collectors edition, yet the reality is only a handful of people bothered with those maps for more than a month anyway. I can still easily find COD matches without any of the map packs, and I can't imagine Battlefield would be any different.

Oh, but it's day one DLC and clearly those maps pulled and reworked from the prequel were a vital part of the BF3 experience and you're all missing out on so much.

@ Lycan XIII and others defending this:

In a single player game like DA2 you're not building an online community. What this means for BF3 players is that right off the bat that community will be split, with preorder customers having access to maps that the rest of the players won't have. If you typically play online with friends or a clan, etc, unless you all preorder you'll have maps that won't be able to all play together on.

This type of move is just stupid. Map packs make sense when you already have a dedicated community, but at launch you want everybody on the same playing field (literally). You want as big a group of players that can all get in on the action as possible.

It's not about cost. It's about building a cohesive community.

I'd just like to add that I'm not "pissed" about this (hell, I'm pre-ordering anyway), but I DO understand why some people might be. It would be different if this were included with all new copies of the game (a la VIP code), but it's not (as far as I can tell).

I'm just never a big fan of pre-order "bonuses" in general.

I'm very psyched about this pack full of (almost) nostalgic kick assery. So long as it's not extra for content that I can't play for another 6 months, it's all good. In fact I MUCH prefer a map/weapons pack instead of early access to a weapon/skin as an incentive to pre order. I'd love to see more pre order content with this amount of substance.

I thought it'd be pretty obvious why they're doing this. They're looking to compete directly with CoD, down to apparently planning on releasing on the same day. They want you to put money down for BF3 before launch day because if you're planning on buying both but only have the money for one, they want to be sure you're getting their game first. Then maybe you like it so much you don't bother with CoD...

@lastdual. it's not like if you got the maps and your friends didn't it means you can never play with them ever again. It just means, those maps that you got free, you won't be able to use them with your friends that don't have them. You instead will have to play on the maps that came with game. So...no it doesn't ruin the experience. You will get the same experience as everyone else, just if you want to use the new maps you will need to pug. So yea...i don't see how this kills the community.

I never bought a pack for any of the COD, so when I played with my friends we just played on the older maps. Still got to play though.

Seriously, none of the content in the pack is new.
I understand the whole 'Wtf dlc before the game is released argument' but the thing is, these 3 maps are from Battlefield 2.
You're really getting 3 old re-skinned maps for free when you preorder the game.

Still, I think it's pretty fucked up to announce DLC when the game isn't completed/released. If don't pre-order, I will have to pay for this crap. What is it going to be? 59$ for the game, then another 10$ish for DLC? Fucking'a...

I don't have a problem with DLC in general, I think it's great. Annoucing DLC when the game isn't out yet? That's fucking retarded. We're talking about 3 additional maps that are already on the "disk" when you buy the game. If you don't pre-order, you will have to buy those map.

This is just fucking WRONG. Were not talking about crappy DLC/pre-order bonus here, where you could get additional skin for your gun (or any other useless stuff) We are talking about 3/4 maps...this wrong on so many level..

Gamming industry is getting so sad nowday...

I pretty much said the same thing, people just like to freak out over nothing. If they are buying the game at some point after launch, I am willing to bet they will still get the maps as they will be inside the case and not a coupon from the retailer...just like ALL these games did:

Bad Company
Dragon Age
Dragon Age 2
Bulletstorm

They all did pretty much the same thing as the Regular Edition = Limited Edition. Just like your "made with real juice" has 5% real juice in it......Marketing!

It has nothing to do with money. Even if it did, just because one can afford it doesn't mean one should plop down 60 bucks right now for a game that isn't even out yet. What if the game flops? You won't know because you will have bought the game before the review comes out. What if it doesn't flop critically (since you probably doubt a BF game could suck, but that's a debate for another time), but you doesn't like it personally? For most games, sure, pre-order incentive probably isn't a big deal. However, for this specific game, either you swallow that risk and buy it now, or you risk missing out on one of the best (and THE most popular) map from BF2.

Christ, sure, people piss without thinking, but you're pissing and moaning even more about people who have the right to complain just because you yourself are blind to any issue that couldn't ever pertain to you. In other words, you're a selfish prick. Sympathy goes a long way, and might even cure your bitching about "bitching."

I myself don't mind since I can and do play Karkand in BF2, and I'm not too hyped up about BF3 anyways. Not to mention the Limited Edition is probably the only one that will exist for PCs.
LightandDark's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/10/2011 15:00

That would be a valid point...if it wasn't for the fact that this is an established developer working on the game. It's not so much a factor of "Will it flop or not" as it is a factor of whether you like DICE's style of games.

And as far as I'm aware, the 'Back to Karkand" expansion pack contains stuff for the BF2 maps its bringing over only, so its more of a pre-order incentive for veterans of the franchise than to those who came over say, via the Bad Company games or BFP4F.

To me, Karkand is to BF2 as Ryu is to Street Fighter.

So getting the chance to play it sooner (or exclusively) matters immensely towards me preordering it. I sure as fuck will pre-order that bitch if they're giving me Karkand.
