Gamers who wanted to patch Battlefield 3 using standalone files are in for a disappointment, with EA confirming that Origin will be the only way to update DICE's shooter.

EA recently served a sizable 3.6GB patch for the game, and fans had requested direct access to the files for faster downloads and the ability to access them on ISP mirrors -- very useful for those bound by download caps.

Sadly, Electronic Arts isn't interested. The company said there will be no standalone installer, and Origin is the only way to keep Battlefield 3 up to date.

If you've got any ideas for future challenges you'd like me to have a go at, feel free to leave them in the comments!
