Batman is like 70-years-old if you’re counting strictly from when he first appeared in a comic book. But when he first showed up on the scene, dude wasn’t an infant. It’s probably safe to estimate that the caped crusader is like 90.
But he doesn’t look a day over 40. And he also fights like a samurai on speed. If you don’t believe me, hit the break. Eidos recently released a new trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum that shows off Batman’s mad fighting skills. (Now with 100 percent more leg breakage.)
The mechanic that makes the combat in Arkham Asylum look so hot is called FreeFlow. It allows you to chain together attacks at a moment’s notice. And judging from the second to last scene -- the one with Killer Croc -- you’ll be in a host of trouble if you don’t master FreeFlow.
Did I mention this game looks gorgeous? Man, this is high on the DO WANT list.
i doubt the combat will be as precise as Itegaki Ninja Gaiden, but thats fine as few games really can get there. I hope there is a "grab" button to initiate the grappling moves.

it is going to fail, just like every game does with to videogaming communities. im sure you can predict the complaints right now actually
Floating timeline is great for comic book characters right? Otherwise Batman would be dead. Love the fighting, although what's up wit the symbols hovering over the character's heads?
Damn, this game is looking good. Although, I hear that Brad Nicholson guy could kick Batman's ass. He wears horses as roller skates and bears as boxing gloves.
why does this game look so good? Every time I see something it looks more and more awesome... I remember hearing about it and thinking meh... but now I'm hyped
As someone who has played the game, it's incredibly satisfying. Though not very deep. Basically you have one attack button, and a "reversal" button which you hit when those symbols appear over the enemies head... to hurt them terribly. I never even had to run, or move at all while fighting. I basically just pointed at the enemy and hit square until he was knocked down, and moved onto the next guy. Using the X button made you run when held down (which I never had to use) and tapping X lets you flip over an enemy, which was actually pretty damn useful. You also have a cape "stun attack" which seemed pretty useless, except for one enemy who you seemingly couldn't do a reversal on, you just cape stunned him instead.
Don't take this as a bad thing though, I personally loved the combat, as shallow as it was. Not every game has to follow the God Of War pattern of "strong attack, and weak attack." Spider-man, Wolverine, Ryu, (and about a million other characters) they are all guilty of fighting the exact same way for the most part. I'm damn excited for this game, you actually feel like an incredible badass, blocking and reversing attacks from 360 degrees, and just punishing criminals in horrible ways. It was awesome.
Anyway, this had better not suck. I really can't tell from looking at the combat. I hope it isn't one of those action games where you awkwardly jump from enemy to enemy, hitting each one once, and then have to repeat the cycle like 10 times because it takes 10 hits to kill an enemy. They didn't show that in the trailer, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out like that. But if it is like in the trailer, than that's pretty tight, because that is how Batman fights. He goes from enemy to enemy very quickly, but he never has to go back to one he's dropped.
The first comic was published in 1939, 70 years ago. But, having not read it, I'm guessing he wasn't a newborn in that particular story. Assuming he was mid 30's to 40 in that story he would be over a hundred today.
The sparks coming off the enemies heads are actually a warning that they are about to attack so you can hit the counter button. It flows together rather well. In case you're wondering how I know, there was a demo of some sort at Frys a month or so ago. I was shocked as hell to see a demo that early. But from what I played of it, it seems like it will definitely be worth picking up.
1) I said it before and I'll say it again: Eidos = bad controls...sloppy at best. Still am baffled that after all these years they haven't gotten it right yet.
2) Is it me or does Batman look like Michael Keaton in this game?
There's a demo at my place of employment, and I've played the hell out of it. The combat is shallow, but ridiculously fun. And the slowdown only happens occasionally - at three hits to show that every hit you make from that point on will knock them down, and then each time you get enough hits in the combo to use a takedown. On the PS3 you press triangle and circle and you get one of the really mean moves where he breaks their limbs or otherwise takes them out of the fight.
@Two, that sounds vaguely like the Rise to Honor combat system. With that system you just attacked with the right controller in whatever direction you flicked it, though. Right now it looks like a mash of Rise to Honor and Mark of Kri, which sounds awesome to me.
This looks sweeeet: and yet watching that made me wish for a hidden "Adam West" mode, where you get trumpet noises and a star saying "BIFF!" or "ZONK!" when you hit someone!

Boy, Bats came to play this time around. "This time I break you"? Hardcore.
Love the comic reference. Definitely looks sweet, I'll give it that much.
