Batman: Arkham City unplayable with DX11, patch coming photo

Batman: Arkham City's lauded PC version is not quite advertised optimal experience right now, with DirectX11 support remaining quite broken. I noticed the issue myself when the game lagged, stuttered and performed terribly until I switched to DX9. I am far from alone

Warner Bros. is aware of the issue and has stated that a patch is coming in the "near future", but wouldn't give a timeframe. Until then, DX9 is the only way to get the game running smoothly, which I can confirm it does.

Considering the game was delayed a month, this is pretty miserable news. The PC version was heavily advertised as providing the ultimate visual experience, full of fancy visual upgrades. That DX11 doesn't work is perhaps expected by cynical PC gamers, but no less disappointing for it.

Patch may be weeks away with thanks to Microsoft's certification process with GFWL attached. This games quite a mess on the PC: GFWL, Broken DX11 mode, 2 pieces of day 1 DLC, 2 delays and activation limits to top it off. Wow Rocksteady and Warner Bros you suck!

I am so, so glad I didn't buy this game. Its just a technical mess, really.

Ugh, why can't we just go back to a time when games are released when they actually work? I guess on PC that would entail going back a *very* long time.

Someone on the Steam forums is claiming its not been modified since console release:
Build name: QA_APPROVED_BUILD_JANUARY_2011
Compiled on: September 27th, 2011 at 18:18.21
If its true wtf has Rocksteady been doing these past months O_o

Bought the game, gameplay fantastic, graphics are great, voice acting is awesome. Support for the game is terrible, day1 dlc is stupid money grabbing bullshit, securom activation is shit.

I bought the game Day 1 because I had good experiences with Arkham Asylum. If Rocksteady doesn't do something to improve this shit I def wont be buying day 1 and will hesitant to buy anything else from them at less than a major markdown.

I'm not a console fanboy by any means, as there are quite a few pc games I'd love to try, and certain games are MUCH better suited for pc. But its shit like this that will always make consoles the most hassle free (aside from online pass nonsense) gaming option

Wow, what the fuck. So they really just sat on their asses the last month and delayed the PC version just to get more console sales in. And they didn't test their game on a single DX11 rig... nice going, Rocksteady.

Other than some (very noticeable lag) at the start of an area, the game runs smoothly for me and looks fantastic! I'm happy to be playing it on PC, even with this issue.

Played this game on console from start to finish... zero technical issues. Not one bug. What are you talking about?

People, people, people, CHILL.

Yes, Rocksteady dropped the ball on DX11. Not excusable.

But let's get real here. This game looks and runs 10 times better than the console version even on DX9.

I played the console version for a bit, and the jaggies, the low rez textures, the pop-in, the screen tearing, the frame rate issues, the overall blurry look thanks to upscaling low rendering resolution, and the short view distance made it the poor man's Batman.

Seriously this game is not a "mess". It's fully playable, it looks unbelievable, it performs incredibly well. It's missing DX11 for now, which again, I'm not making excuses for, but I'm playing the game right now and I'm 99% happy (that 1% is my sweet, sweet tessellation missing).

I played it on console. I thought it looked pretty damn good. Sure it would look like eye candy on PC, but I didn't want to wait.

It's hardly surprising, considering the final build is from 27th of September, same day as the consoles. No fine-tuning was put into this and it really shows: It's a miserable, bugged piece of trash as it stands now. Case in point: I can't even leave the assembly line room because the god damn door won't open after I hit it with that Electro-Thingamajigg. It just rattles like it has a seizure but remains closed.

I'm just glad I got the console version first instead of waiting for this.

I did get it for free though and it runs fine without DX11... but isn't that where the major differences come from aside from the PhysX?
Kinthalis's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/25/2011 09:27

DX11 adds Tessellation and HBAO essentially.

Tessellaiton is only applied to some surfaces.

The major differences come from no pop-in, higher resolution textures, running at 1080p or higher, 60 FPS, no screen tearing, much larger view distance, proper anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, and the Physx effects which add to the atmosphere of the game.

The DX11 is just the icing on the cake, which we have to wait for.

The major differences come purely from it running on a PC, not from DX 11 (at least not for this particular game).

@smel - There's no reason to jump to conclusions regarding RockSteady. WB could have just had easily outsourced the code to some incapable devs for less money. As for the delay, that's just another instance of the born being to release the console versus first to minimize piracy. Out happens with 95% of all games nowadays.

Uhm no. It happens to a couple of games a year, not 95%.

Whoa, autocorrect errors.

As for the delay, that's just another instance of the norm being to release the console versions first to minimize piracy. It happens with 95% of all games nowadays.

Kinthalis - ...Have you paid attention through out the years? Portal Battlefield 3, Skyrim, CoD are rare exceptions; the vast majority come out weeks to months later. Red Faction, Batman, Saints Row, everything by Rockstar, everything by Ubisoft, everything by Capcom, etc...

@ Arttemis

not to make this yet another piracy debate, but didn't portal 2 sell better on PC?

honestly if the delay was to reduce piracy then it's failed big time for me. it might be a great game but i've lost my enthusiasm to play it, and now with these problems (made SO much worse after taking an extra month) and so many other quality games now on offer/half finished i'll most likely pick this up in a sale next year if at all.

so yeah well done rocksteady, you've really fucked this up. i'm getting tired of developers/publishers thinking they can continue to mistreat PC players and still have them come back - next time i for one won't. no matter how many end up doing this there are inevitably 10 others ready and willing to step in and supply a quality product.

@Devilot

Serious Sam 3 actually worked perfectly out of the box (if you can call it that, since it was download-only :P). There were no problems with it (as far as I know) until the first patch was released.

I didn't notice any issues with Saints Row: The Third or Hard Reset on release day, either.

Does this mean 3 years from now when the sequel comes out, that it won't be developed for PC because of piracy?

On an Nvidia card, perhaps it's just ATI?

That's pretty shitty. I played through the game on 360 and really liked it, so I was going to grab the PC version. Good thing I don't plan on getting it brand new, so maybe this will be fixed by the time a Steam sale rolls around.

A game like this WILL be fixed for PC, so Don't get ur Panties in a bunch lil fel'R, you'll get ur PC game On soon ENUFF in DX 11 splendour.
Just be glad this isn't like the "usual" console/PC experience, SURE it was prolly purposely delayed but for a good reason (imho THAT REASON IS console gamers are Dumbed down versions of PC gamers & they'll take the broomn stick DRY, DLC & ALL !!!.
I would like to Mention that all this TALK bout piracy is a JOKE, Consoles have as much to blame in piracy as PC, what they gonna do?>>BAN PC's & force you to Ipad in cloud ??? (i BET you they are already thinking this !!! Y? cause "I AM" & KNOW.
OFC u Need a PC to get the ball roll'N but Consoles have tonnes of hack'd content On the rdy for Download & excuses like PC is to blame is like saying cause you shit, your shit reflects sunlight sooo MUCH that there's global freezing on the way. (ROFLMFAO)

I will No Longer buy pre order/ day 0 games because i feel they hack away content that would in yrs past be included but now made as 0 day/week/month DLC @ ridiculously long held prices.
I Personally would rather they go back & release "quality expansion" packs rather then this segmented DLC insult as extra content to extend a games replayability/ enjoyment.
I will take the hook once in a while when DLC is priced FAR lower then it's original asking price.
Best to just wait for a GOTY edition or something a long those lines.
I know games are made for profit (rightfully so) but when it cheaps the game down with advantage perks or content that could easily be made by mods/user comunity it smacks of ¨q¡É¨r to the gamer & says "U the gamer can go ¨q¡É¨r cause we RULE u & u'll take it DRY"
