Batman: Arkham City is Metacritic's top rated 2011 game photo

Metacritic has released its annual list of top rated games, revealing that Batman: Arkham City on PS3 was the most critically acclaimed title of 2011. It beat out The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by a mouse's cock.

Here's the full list, including their average Metacritic scores:

  1. Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 96)
  2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360, 96)
  3. Portal 2 (PC, 95)
  4. Portal 2 (Xbox 360, 95)
  5. Portal 2 (PS3, 95)
  6. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360, 94)
  7. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS, 94)
  8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, 94)
  9. Mass Effect 2 (PS3, 94)
  10. Minecraft (PC, 93)

All told, a fairly obvious set of games, but it's a bit annoying that it's more of a "top six" than a top ten. Also, I am personally surprised by Minecraft. How in the name of buggering Christ does somebody actually review that thing? Ah well.

Do you agree with this list, or are you OUTRAGED, SIR!?

I'd be okay with Arkham being on top if the ending didn't completely self destruct and leaving gaping plot holes left and right.

Why include different versions od one game in a top 10 list? As for Batman: Arkham City...totally deserved it best game of 2011 for me by far.

I actually liked the ending (up until the VERY end/credits). But then again I'm just a huge fanboy of the mystery villain that showed up in it. Also, the final voicemail could have been a recording.

I didnt like the ending at all. It turned into a bunch of pretty pointless surprise cameos that made little to no sense what so ever. And resulted in making the entire story filled with Batmobile sized plot holes.

I'd honestly say the ending to City is worse than Asylum.

First of all I like gamerankings better because they include more media sites.

Secondly, what does this really prove? That these games were loved by mainstream media?

Every person has to make an individual decision what games they find great and dont.

@Magnalon: Thanks for the non-spoiler! Still working my way through it.

Also annoyed by multiple platforms counted separately.

Also, also: Minecraft isn't complete, as you have to build everything yourself. Thus, incomplete game = 1.0 review score.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i think Arkham it's first based on alphabetical order, the numbers in skyrim are better in both user and critics reviews.

"I'd honestly say the ending to City is worse than Asylum."

NO WAY! While the cameos may have been pointless, I will never forgive Rocksteady for attempting to ruin The Joker by making him into The Hulk. The Joker would never, ever do something like that.

While "City"'s ending was campy, and seemed like they kind of threw their hands up in the air and didn't know how to end it, it was way better than attempting to ruin a character.

AC was pretty weak all around. The story was mish-mashed together and required a comic book tie-in to make heads or tails of, which AA did not. Then there was gutted single player content and halfassed DLC released within weeks of release.

I just don't see how it got such high ratings for such a weak, unfocused follow-up.

The Zelda/Metroid angle suited Batman better. It just had the right balance of tools, exploration and combat. OPen world Batman sounds nice on paper, but it doesn't play to the strengths of the franchise at all.

The difference is rounding/truncating. From the article " A huge sequel to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City (on the PS3) edged out the 360 version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by a few decimal points to take top honors as Metacritic's 2011 Game of the Year."

I'll do it for you.

If you average out all 3 franchises in the top 10, all of them have an average of 95. That's not including AC PC and Skyrim PS3 though.

If you include all versions, it's this:

AC - 93.6; Skyrim - 94; - Portal 2 - 95

Fun / disheartening challenge. Go on to metacritic and look at "top rated video games" then look at the top 100 games and count how many came out between 2009 and 2011 vs how many came out between 2000 and 2008

metacritic is a joke because review scores have become a joke.

Probably, Metacristic shoudl have said, "For games on multiple pltforms teh scores are averaged before being placed on teh list." That would be fair in my mind "THE GAME" is what each port bring to it. Thus Portal is (95+95+95/3= 95), Skyrim is (96+94+92/3= 94), Batman: Arkham City is (96+94+91/3=93.6)

In the way the TOP 10 would have Ten games on it. Moreover, each game is judged not just on the 'best port', but the average for that game.

And if you exclude multiple entries of the same game, this is the actual list:

Batman: Arkham City
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Portal 2
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Minecraft
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Rayman Origins
LittleBigPlanet 2
Gears of War 3

On this list is something for (almost) every gamer. Everybody wins!

Ha ha, I am also quite a fan of HIM and I loved how he showed up. The story was not perfect by any means, but the good things about it made up for the problems I had.

Also, I liked the final battle a lot more than the one in Asylum. It was still quite easy, but it was really epic and made a lot more of sense.

Loved the game overall. It deserved those ratings.

The other interesting question is what do you do with late ports? Shoudl the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 be on an GOTY lists when it is merely a late port of a game taht came out in 2010 on XB360 and PC?

And, what about a remake? What if the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary had a 98%. If that had been the case should it have won? Thank goodness the HD collectiosn so far have not scored very high...

Wait a minute something's rotten in Denmark. World of Goo iOS is the actual #1 game - are there rules involved in excluding these?

Also, I took the time to make a real Top 10 list:

1) World of Goo (iOS) - 96
2) Portal 2 (360, PS3, PC) - 95
3) Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (360, PS3, PC) - 94
4) Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - 94
5) Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 360, PC) - 93.6
6) Anomaly: Warzone Earth (iOS) - 94
7) Mass Effect 2 (PS3) - 94
8) Minecraft (PC) - 93
9) iBlast Moki 2 HD (iOS) - 93
10) Skyward Sword (Wii) - 93

Excluding iOS it's

1) Portal 2 (360, PS3, PC) - 95
2) Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (360, PS3, PC) - 94
3) Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - 94
4) Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 360, PC) - 93.6
5) Mass Effect 2 (PS3) - 94
6) Minecraft (PC) - 93
7) Skyward Sword (Wii) - 93
8) Uncharted 3 - Drake's Deception (PS3) - 92
9) ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS3) - 91
10) LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3) - 91

People say the ending is packed with cameos, but I can't think of a single character who appears at the end who wasn't required to have the plot work. The only superfluous character is Two-Face, and he's borderline bonus content.

Don't get me wrong. Batman:AC was a good game, but it didn't hold a candle to Arkham Asylum which was a much tighter scripted game, & a better experience. Going sandbox was not a good idea. There have been better games this year, including Portal 2.

I'm glad to see the PS3 version of Skyrim didn't make it. Even at 92 on metacritic it's a big pile of lying bullshit. 2 months on, & I still can't play this game without it actually damaging the information on my PS3.

@Isay Isay

The wii had the lowest average by about 5 percentage points.

I will say it again. Metacritic is a great way to see what the mainstream has to say. But overall, you need to look at the game yourself.

For instance radiant historia was my favorite and I feel best game of the year. Scored high in all publications. But not mainstream enough to be included seriously in metacritic.

Thats the issue

I really liked Arkham City, one of the things that stood out for me was all the unique banter you pickup between bad guys as you're swinging from building to building. The game did not seem as focused as Asylum but I think alot of that is due to the larger scope of the game. I would like to say Skyrim deserves the #1 spot but some of the bugs were just terrible. I enjoy the heck out of the game, but when I'm left with half a dozen quests in my log that I can't complete due to bugs it's a bit disheartening.

You're a fanboy who hates iOS. I'd expect you to say that.

Anomaly Warzone Earth has 15 reviews. That's more than enough to legitimately consider it part of the top 10. Arbitrarily deciding "15 reviews is not high enough to be considered a real game" is a terrible precedent to set.

Radiant Historia is right there. 85. Second best game on DS (or third if you count Pokemon Black/White as two games).

@Magnalon
Good point. Then Portal 2 is the highest rated game of 2011.

I also thought about the ios titles, and why they weren't included. Maybe Metacritic doesn't consider ios as a valid gaming platform.

And also, like MonkeyKing1969 said, should late ports and remakes make the list? If not then we need to exclude Mass Effect 2, Ocarina of Time and ICO/Colossus.

By those updated standards :D

1) Portal 2 (360, PS3, PC) - 95
2) Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (360, PS3, PC) - 94
3) Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 360, PC) - 93.6
4) Minecraft (PC) - 93
5) Skyward Sword (Wii) - 93
6) Uncharted 3 - Drake's Deception (PS3) - 92
7) LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3) - 91
8) Gears of War 3 (360) - 91
9) Forza 4 (360) - 91
10) Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) - 90

Honestly? That looks like the best list you could make. Provided you don't consider iOS a legitimate platform <3

I looked at ur lists, count 3 total but not 3 on the same list. Its more about how the Nintendo has become a shit platform to develop on and nobody wants to touch it. Xbox, PlayStation, and PC have their problems but atleast they are an option for a Valve, Bethesda, Or Bioware.

@ So you're saying that if Valve, Bethesda, or Bioware don't develop for a platform, the platform is automatically shit? What's your favorite platform? PC? I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. Whatever it is you're into, next time try and remember that not everyone likes the same things you do. And to go a bit deeper here, remember that some people do like the same things as you and yet also like other things you may not.

It's a big world, with lots of different types of people who like lots of different things. It just so happens that more people buy Nintendo products than Valve, Bioware, or Bethesda products, at least in terms of what they actually produce themselves. Does this mean Nintendo is better than those 3 companies? By the logic you're using, the answer is clearly yes.

But we both know that the answer to that question is totally up for debate and a matter of opinion. So be a little more reasonable next time put your fingers on the keyboard.

Batman was just alright, It started a little slow, the middle was good, but by the last half showed that the mechanics were pretty boring. The combat was to "streamlined", you mainly just mashed the attack button and batman would zoom across screen, and you'd dodge when you'd see an enemy emitting lines off his head. That got boring quick because it felt like the game was playing itself. All of these wild combos and I only have to press a single button.

Stealth was good at first, but it became way too easy. You could be as loud as you wanted without being penalized. Basically you could crash down on an enemy and make a ruckus then hid for a little bit in a vent or on a gargoyle, and everyone would go back to normal quickly. Sure their were traps and other stuff to make things interesting, but their was no reward (aside from probably an achievement) for doing it stealthy wise, it became alot faster to just beat up a bunch of guys at once and run off before someone shots you.

Arkham City was not a bad game, but it does not deserve the rank of highest rated game of the year especially this year which had some truly incredible games released that are unforgettable. If you did not play Arkham City and now feel like playing it because all the hype I say you didn't miss much. Wasn't bad, but I wouldn't consider it a must play unless you're a huge batman fan.
